Speaking of Bert Jones, another guy with bad knees that "could have been" was Steve Bartkowski.

Speaking of Otto Graham's era, Van Brocklin really got screwed in terms of his numbers. Or Waterfield did depending on how you want to look at it. If either of those guys had benefited from being "the guy" instead of splitting the workload their numbers would have been pretty amazing.

Modern era consideration: Chad Pennington

Not any where near a HoF candidate or anything like that, just wanted to say he's an under appreciated QB. I think it was Molker who helped me see the light last year.

Took the words out of my mouth. When hes healthy he has been a top 6 or 7 QB. Jets didn't now wha they had until he was gone.

I would put McNabb up there as well. Alot better player then the amount of scorn he gets.

I don't think they missed him at all until Favre tore his biceps tendon. He was completing 70.6% of his passes and had 20 TD's and the Jets had just beaten the undefeated Titans and they were alone in first place in the AFC East going into week 13.

Pennington isn't underrated in my opinion because everyone knows exactly what he is. An injury prone game manager. Even after last year, Miami is preparing to phase him out after 2010. He will rarely hurt your team but he doesn't win games either. Playing it safe will look great for completion % and QB rating but when the playoffs roll around...

Me thinks you just have a thing for older quarterbacks. ;)

I'll play the what if game with you and tell you the Jets would have made the playoffs with Chad as tehir QB. And Mangini would have kept his job. He's a winner and that team had a strong run game and good run defense. I knew they were toast the minute they traded for Brett. Unfortuntaley I made my Vbookie bet AFTER that fact.

What he did for Miami last year was nothing short of amazing and just calling him a "game manager" isn't doing him enough justice. Its not like he was playing with the 85 Bears last years. He was the MAIN difference on a team that otherwise won just one game the year before. Don't forget he went to an AFC championship game and would have had an overallwinning playoff record if not for the Jets kicker shanking 4 kicks in the playoff game against SD.

He's accurate, tough, and his team just wins. I am not trying to make him out to be a HOF. But he's alot better then people give him credit for. I always say that if hes drafted in '91 by Dallas he would have had Troy Aikmans career.

Hes that accurate and that smart.

I know everyone hates him, but how about Joe Theismann. Cocky, tough and very good once the Skins got some players around him. Old school Cards: Even though I loved watching Jim Hart throw bombs to Mel Gray, Lomax was highly underrated also.

Neil Lomax. To put up a 47-52-2 record as a starter for the pre-UPS Cardinals makes him one of the greatest QBs of all time.

Pastorini, Oilers

Handing off to Earl Campbell was tough.......

This is all relative.

Under-rated in relative to what ?

In regards to one of the greatest of all time ?

Dan Fouts

In regards to a team?

Steve Young was better than Joe Montana

In regards to not a HOF but was a great great QB ?

Kenny Stabler, and soon to be Kurt Warner

Yeah, I wrote it. Last year Kurt Warner was ridiculous. 100%, AB-SO-LUTE-LY RIDICULOUS. When Kurt is "in the zone" he is unstoppable. His game against Miami was sick. Just sick.

put down the scotch rugby...

How about this. I have seen all these "all time rankings" in this thread with one startling admission.

How about the guy with 3 rings and the record for TD passes in a season?

He's #2 in my book and climbing. Only behind the aftermentioned Joe Cool.

I was going to toss his name out there. Some of you young guys that never saw Lomax to Green missed a dynamic duo. He threw a beautiful pass, and for a year or two they were unstoppable. Too bad his hip gave him so much problems

What planet are you guys from who think Elway is underrated??

The man had his fair share of media worship even BEFORE he won the Super Bowls.

Is Tiger Woods underrated to you guys?

in regard of Montana vs say Elway or Young

how about as a chief and past his prime...if winning counts

Montana was injured for part of the 1993 season, but still led the Chiefs in two come-from-behind wins in the 1993 playoffs and reached the AFC Championship Game, where Kansas City lost to the Buffalo Bills. Including their two playoff victories that year, the 1993 Chiefs won 13 games, tying the franchise record for wins in a season. Montana was also selected to his final Pro Bowl at the end of the 1993 season.

Montana returned healthy to the Chiefs in 1994, starting all but two games. His highlights included a classic duel with John Elway (which Montana won 31-28) on Monday Night Football, and a memorable game in week 2 when Montana played against his old team, the 49ers and Steve Young. In a much-anticipated match-up, Montana and the Chiefs prevailed and defeated the 49ers 24–17. Montana led his team to a final playoff appearance in 1994.

Judging by the recent polls, I'm going to go with Elway. Again, I really don't like the man nor the team, but watching him here in Denver week after week really gave me an appreciation for the way he led that team to victory after victory...even when otherwise overmatched.

JMHO

Can a Hall of Famer really be underated??
I don't believe Elway is underated at all. Do you think the Broncos really do much of anything at the end of his career if it wasn't for TD? Very debatable.

Those two games sort of sum up my feelings on which one was great and which one's were good.

That's like saying that Warner wouldn't have done anything with the Cardinals if it hadn't been for Larry Fitzgerald or with the Rams if it hadn't been for Faulk,Bruce and Holt. Has any QB ever done anything with nothing to support him?

Montana had Rice and Craig. Bradshaw was surrounded by HOF players. Brady plays in the best system ever, (NE goes 11-5 with Brady out.) Marino had Duper and Clayton but no solid running game and only made one Super Bowl. Aikman had a ton of weapons. Peyton had Harrison and Edge and Clark.

Farve probably comes closest to winning without a strong supporting cast. Two Super Bowls/one win, only one losing season in 16 years and with 6 different guys leading the team in receiving and 9 in rushing. But even he won his ring the year his defense was ranked #1 in the NFL.
