I just got back form Flagstaff after watching 7 different practices. After observing very closely some of the people we have come to know and watching the new additions I must say that overall I am very excited to see this team play.

Defense:

This "new" defense we have is realy going to be good IMO. I think they will be good enough and quick enough to keep us in most games this year. The additions of Berry, Dockett, Dansby, and the maturing of Pace is going to make for a nice year in the sack category FINALLY! Throw in the fact that we have two healthy and fast CBs with the return of Starks and the addition of Macklin. Both of which are having really good camps and can really play. I admit that Macklin is quite an upgrade from what we were used to. The LBs are solid. I really wish you all could see how Levar Woods has been playing.

Adrian Wilson! The guy has really come around in practice. I hope this carries to the field. His athletacism cannot be questioned. If he shows in the games the same mental awareness and play making ability that he has been showing in camp then we might finally have the star SS we need.

Overall the improvements are amazing. I know a lot of this has been said before. But this year there is something different about the D it cant be explained unless your watching it. I fully expect 45+ sacks and two CBs with more than 4 ints a piece. My only hope that is that Dexter Jackson is inserted back into the line-up. I just dont feel that Q. Harris is fully ready! Defense wins games. IMO we have one. Thats why I still have hope for this coming season!

Offense:

I really liked what I saw out of McCown. In the two previous camps it was questionable as to whether the guy even belonged in the NFL. This year the guy doesnt even look like the same person. All of his passes are strong, accurate, and confident. When I say accurate I mean they are hitting the guys right in the numbers constantly. Not like in past camps where stuff would sail on him. I really think Dennis Green knew what he was doing with Josh. He will still have some rough times and I expect that. But he will be very exciting to watch as well. I pray he doesnt come down with an injury as well. But with the OL problems and the scheme I dont see him lasting all year. I hope Im wrong. King is nothing special but he is serviceable. If McCown stays healthy all year and we get Anquan back by week 8 I could see him having 3500 yards 20+ TDs but 20+ Ints as well.

The RB by comittee that we will be running is a concern. Losing Shipp will hurt. But I feel that both Scobey and Anderson are fully capable athletes and will step in and perform well. They have to! Both look very good. I give the edge to Scobey but just slightly.

Losing Anquan has hurt no doubt. But with the addition of Fitz and with the scheduled return of Johnson before the season starts you still have to very big and strog WRs. All indications prior to his injury is that Johnson looks great. Many WRs have a tremendous jump in production in year 2. I still feel that the WR corps without Boldin can be formidable. Maybe not "GREAT" but good enough. Hopefully Kasper or Poole can unseat Williams as the 3rd WR. I think they bring more to the table.

Freddie Jones looks really good but doesnt do a whole lot on running plays. We are really going to need to finally see him be the pro-bowl caliber TE he is capable of. I also really like Diamond!

This O-line is a mess. Here is the inherant problem with this team and instead of a team that could be 8 and 8 or better. I see it as a 5 to 7 win team that will compete every week. Green has messed this up in a big way. I really cant stress how bad the interior line looked in camp. You constantly had DTs in the QBs face or blowing up running plays before they could even start. Stepanovich just isnt ready to start. Cameron Spikes was constantly getting beat by a variety of players. Reggie Wells has no consistency. I know its been hashed over enough but the current line should be Clement, Big, Kendall, Wells, Shelton. That would have been this teams best opportunity to win ballgames especially with the new coaching thats going on. Green gets a free pass on this and I understand why. But either way he made a mistake.

While speaking with Mike Jurecki, he stated that many players have bought into Greens system. He also said that many(he wouldnt give names) good players have not. He said that they are not buying what Green is selling. I hope this does not become a problem in the future or tear this team down the middle. Only time will tell.

Well I dont know if there is to much Kool-Aid in that or not. But thats how I see it shaping up this year. We will get our first game action to look at tomorrow and everybody will see this coming together. Hopefully in a favorable way!

Funny how there are such different perspectives on the O-Line. Over at www.azcardinals.com, Frank Garcia's diary indicates that he feels the O-Line is just starting to gel and that they understand what Green is trying to do, and are buying into it. This is so contrary to anythink else I've read.

Thanks for your report.

The positive news on Woods and Wilson is very encouraging. Clearly, a strength of the team are our LB's.........and maybe even the whole secondary.

Great job Shane.

I think there is one word in your posts and Skkorp's, among others who have seen the practices, that excites me more than ever and in some ways renders moot the actual record this upcoming season.

COMPETITIVE

Hopefully we have seen the end of completely embarassing one-sided losses.

Shane, I do think your 45+ sacks thing is way too high this year but I would take about 33-35 and consider it a major, major improvement. I mean based on last years team sack numbers, 45 would have placed them at #2 in the entire NFL. I like the optimism (and man do I hope you are actually right) but 35 would place them about middle of the pack which at this juncture would be fantastic in my book.

I dunno. Speed and athletacism should not be a problem with this team this year. Two of thee things needed to get to the QB. Either way it should be much much better!

Not the sorry 20 or less that we have been used to!

Nice job, Shane - a few impressions reading between your lines:

1. One reason why McCown may look much sharper this year than last is that, as the starter, he now gets most of the reps and practices against the first unit. (Not getting the necessary reps is an automatic drag on the development of most backups).

2. Is the defense that good because it's going up against our O-line? Or does the O-line look that bad because it's going up against our rejuvinated defense? This is why the preseason games are so important. At least we can use opposing teams (rather than ourselves) to measure our progress.

3. Jurecki's aside to you about a number of "good" players not buying into Denny's system is really scary. MJ seems to be giving you inside insight he's not yet ready to share with the broader public, and what he's telling you - if accurate - is not good.

4. Your take on Macklin reflects everything I hoped we'd get in a FA corner. And Starks at the other corner puts us in a solid position on pass "D" when we enter most football games. My major concern is keeping them both healthy and on the field, because whether or not we adequate backup depth at corner remains to be seen, and Starks hasn't exactly been Mr. Durable of late.

5. In the end, it's all about how well we (1) run the ball, (2) stop the run, (3) don't screw up on pass defense and (4) don't turn over the ball. After that, (5) putting points up on the board and (6) making big defensive plays become our next most important priorities. But we need to achieve the first four if we're to get off dead-center. This is what I'll be zeroing in on during the Minny game and the preseason games that follow.

Sports reporters like to hear themselves talk! It is a big part of the reason that they have chosen the career that they have. The problem is that at times these guys will make somewhat cryptic statements with nothing behind them. It makes it appear that they have some inside track that no one else has been astute enough to catch on to.

I believe this is such an occurrance! Think about it... if "many good players" are not buying into Greens plan, that would mean that they prefer the alternative, which was the McGinnis "rah-rah with no plan" approach. Oh, but we saw with our own eyes last season, the players didn't buy into that very well either.

Either the players buy in to what Green is selling or they will not be here, I don't think the ante is optional. If there are such players, perhaps they want out of Arizona, and I say either "ante up" or good riddance!

But my bottom line is that this is likely a case of Jurecki's mouth being in gear with out taking his mind along for the ride!

P.S. - This is not an attack on MJ, just an observation upon reporters in general.

Shane: the most enjoyable thing about your post is seeing Normar in a Cubs uniform. Best SS we have had since Ernie Banks. We have to resign this guy regarless of cost. He is already more popular than Sammy Sosa and will be a baseball God in Chicago if he decides to stay. I think they could easily come up with 15 mil a year for 5 years. Mia seems to like Chicago and he gets cheers even when he makes an out.

Shane thanks for all of the great posts lately! When you were up there did you happen to talk to any of the players about Shipp and if so had any of them talked to him to see how he is doing physically and mentally?

I didn't realize that we had Many good players on this team.

Maybe these so called good players are pissed because they have been demoted.
