In a van...down by the river.
Very candid and interesting interview
I listened to the first 30 minutes or so.
Nash is a class act and I love the guy as a player and as a celebrity who doesn't take himself too seriously.......I still disagree with some of his(and others) theories on what went wrong during our 4 yr run but thats been beat to death.

I wish there were more Steve Nash's in professional sports.

I thought his comments about Amare were interesting mixed with his thoughts about Shaq. I hope Amare can realize that his meshing with Nash is what makes this team so great.

I aggree. You can't question Nash's class or his spirit or his willingness to be a good teammate. You can't question his offensive talent. However, his theories are way off and not very self reflective. He has just as much to do with why the Suns can't get over the hump as any player that has been through here in his tenure with the Suns because of his defense. When an all star center can't put you over the top that says alot IMO.

I liked the bit of the guy in the 80's who ran, but Nash mumbles a bit too much.

Don't ignore the fact that the "all star center" we had was one of the worst at pick-and-roll defense, and he was dead on when he talked about how point guards burn us.

I enjoyed listening to that. However, it did kind of bother me to hear him say that he doesn't like to fully exert himself on defense. He also seemed eager to shift some of the blame to "big guys" for the team's inability to contain quick point guards.

he didnt say he doesnt like to exert himself on defense, he said when youre responsible for the whole offense, having to get 20 pts and 10 assists, that you have to conserve your energy sometimes.

I think all NBA players starters conserve their energy to a certain extent. It's a long season with a lot of back to back games.

Was Nash conserving his energy during the podcast? Geez, liven it up.

A characteristic of this team ever since D'Antoni took over is that every player on the roster regards defense as somebody else's problem. Stoudemire blames the other big men, Nash blames O'Neal, O'Neal blames the wings, the wings blame the interior. The roster seems simply unable to buy into the concept that defense is a team effort, defined by team successes and failures.

That's the recipe for failure, the start of the end for Nash led team: They were made too reliant on him creating most, more than it's really needed. And this gives Nash excuse to shirk on D. And once in playoffs, good def. teams like Spurs and Hornets either cut off the life support line by neutralizing Nash on offense, or teams with average PG abuse Nash on defense for wins.

Whether Nash's withholding himself on D is justifiable, I'd rather he work on D and we live with the consequence that he only play 25-30 min and/or be less relied on on offense. That's the only chance we have to any meaningful postseason success.

Supposedly, that's what you want a franchise player for. With leadership, the foot solders will follow. ;)

I don't ignore that. In fact, I refute the fact that it was even as big a problem as has been stated. The Suns didn't have a pick and roll problem that publicized before Shaq got here and yet the Suns were burned more then any team by point guards pre-Shaq. Funny how Shaq has always been regarded a bad pick and roll player but that didn't stop the Lakers or Miami. Pick and roll defense is one aspect of defense and doesn't stop your team from being good defensively. Not that many buckets over the course of the game can be contribted to pick and roll plays. Most teams cannot even run that damn thing effectively.

PGs have been burning the Suns since Nash got here. There has been several team changes in the starting lineup in Nash's tenure. The biggest constant has been Nash. When I say "self reflective" I mean from the standpoint that our PG defense has been some of the worst in the NBA under Nash.

Since drafting Amare (and years without KT), we've ALWAYS had pick and roll problems, that is well publicized for years.

Not nearly as much as with Shaq here. The amount of attention that got was ridiculous. That is like picking one hole in a leaky roof that looks like Swiss cheese.

Again, the common denominator is Nash. I would be curious to see how Amare plays the pick and roll with a better defensive PG. Shaq on the other hand never played good pick and roll defense and it never stopped his teams from getting titles. Pick and roll defense is so overrated IMO and only a small part of overall team defense.

Man I dont understand the Nash haters.. he's a 6'2" white guy over 30, he's come at a bargain price the last few years, won 2 mvps, made a lot of guys look good, and won us a ton of games. Sure his defense is below average, but he is still well worth what he is paid, and should not be the focus of blame for the Suns' recent fortunes.

Amare is much younger than Nash, is a freak athlete, and doesn't have to run the offense or ballhandle, if anything he is much more to blame for not blossoming defensively. Bringing in an over the hill Shaqasaurus didn't make us any better, probably worse as he was an odd part in the system and well past his prime. This is also not Nash's fault. The only people I blame on this team is the front office and Sarver for not keeping Joe Johnson somehow, and mortgaging the future too heavily.

Who hates Nash? The guys number is on my avatar. Pointing out a players weakness that impacts the entire team is not "hating". I just choose not to overlook them just because he is a fantastic offensive player (one of the best in the league). I appreciate what he has done and enjoyed watching him make the Suns fun again. However, there is a flip side to what he has brought to the Suns and that can't be ignored.

As long as Nash is such a horrible defender and as long as the Suns are one of the worst defensive teams in the league....Nash HAS TO BE A FOCUS in that regard as long as the Suns don't play enough defense to win a title.

You will get no argument from me that Amare is another problem. However, he is nowhere near as bad as Nash (relative to his position) IMO. When Amare has shown up on defense (yes I know he is not consistent), this team has looked unstoppable. Nash never shows up on defense and there is no upside to his defensive game.
