Very candid and interesting interview
I listened to the first 30 minutes or so.
Nash is a class act and I love the guy as a player and as a celebrity who doesn't take himself too seriously.......I still disagree with some of his(and others) theories on what went wrong during our 4 yr run but thats been beat to death.
I wish there were more Steve Nash's in professional sports.
It's ok, we all find you boring as well
I aggree. You can't question Nash's class or his spirit or his willingness to be a good teammate. You can't question his offensive talent. However, his theories are way off and not very self reflective. He has just as much to do with why the Suns can't get over the hump as any player that has been through here in his tenure with the Suns because of his defense. When an all star center can't put you over the top that says alot IMO.
Was Nash conserving his energy during the podcast? Geez, liven it up.
he didnt say he doesnt like to exert himself on defense, he said when youre responsible for the whole offense, having to get 20 pts and 10 assists, that you have to conserve your energy sometimes.
A characteristic of this team ever since D'Antoni took over is that every player on the roster regards defense as somebody else's problem. Stoudemire blames the other big men, Nash blames O'Neal, O'Neal blames the wings, the wings blame the interior. The roster seems simply unable to buy into the concept that defense is a team effort, defined by team successes and failures.
My bad. It wasn't so much Nash hate, just could have been a better podcast.Wow, Nash hate much. 3 posts to say you found it boring. We get it.
Don't ignore the fact that the "all star center" we had was one of the worst at pick-and-roll defense, and he was dead on when he talked about how point guards burn us.
I don't ignore that. In fact, I refute the fact that it was even as big a problem as has been stated. The Suns didn't have a pick and roll problem that publicized before Shaq got here and yet the Suns were burned more then any team by point guards pre-Shaq. Funny how Shaq has always been regarded a bad pick and roll player but that didn't stop the Lakers or Miami. Pick and roll defense is one aspect of defense and doesn't stop your team from being good defensively. Not that many buckets over the course of the game can be contribted to pick and roll plays. Most teams cannot even run that damn thing effectively.
PGs have been burning the Suns since Nash got here. There has been several team changes in the starting lineup in Nash's tenure. The biggest constant has been Nash. When I say "self reflective" I mean from the standpoint that our PG defense has been some of the worst in the NBA under Nash.
Since drafting Amare (and years without KT), we've ALWAYS had pick and roll problems, that is well publicized for years.
Man I dont understand the Nash haters.. he's a 6'2" white guy over 30, he's come at a bargain price the last few years, won 2 mvps, made a lot of guys look good, and won us a ton of games. Sure his defense is below average, but he is still well worth what he is paid, and should not be the focus of blame for the Suns' recent fortunes.
Amare is much younger than Nash, is a freak athlete, and doesn't have to run the offense or ballhandle, if anything he is much more to blame for not blossoming defensively. Bringing in an over the hill Shaqasaurus didn't make us any better, probably worse as he was an odd part in the system and well past his prime. This is also not Nash's fault. The only people I blame on this team is the front office and Sarver for not keeping Joe Johnson somehow, and mortgaging the future too heavily.
