This isn't the 1980s and Drummond isn't either of those things anyway.
This is 2020 and the Suns suck, and have for a decade.

Whatever they are doing doesn't look good. They need power in the post.

Power in the post, exactly what the Warriors recent dynasty was built around.

Sorry but "power in the post" doesn't win you anything in the NBA anymore. It won't even get you to the playoffs, ask Anthony Davis.

It is 2020 and the Suns have sucked for the last decade but you need to go back farther than that to find a team that achieved real success by being built around a powerful post game. The NBA has changed, a lot, and that isn't the recipe for success.

Not built around, but certainly having one at all.

And for that, I will go all the way back to...2019 and the Toronto Raptors with Marc Gasol, Pascal Siakam and a very athletic and strong Kawhi Leonard at small forward.

Everyone on the Lakers except for AD and LBJ are on the trade block.

The only one of that group that could even remotely be called a "post player" is Gasol and with the Raptors Gasol spent most of his time beyond the 3 point line.

They were still capable of having an inside game, unlike the model the Suns seem to advocate...

The Suns are currently scoring .99 points per post up play. The Raptors, last year, scored .94 points per post up play. Both teams only ran post ups about 1 in 20 possessions, which is typical around the league.

The example of Raptors being a team that had post play as relevant feature to their offense is invalid, and not only that, the current Suns are more successful at running post plays than that Raptor team was (the Suns were a better post team than the Raptors last year too).

Moral of the story; in the modern, fast pace, slashing and shooting NBA, post play doesn't mesh with most offensive systems and is actively avoided.

Seems to be working pretty darn well for the Lakers this season...

I guess this is as close as you can get to admitting you were wrong about the Raptors?

Anyway...

We're scoring the exact same amount of points per post up play as the Lakers. They run post ups only slightly more often, accounting for 7.6% of their plays. So, again, they hardly fit as a team that uses post ups as a primary set.

The only team that posts up even 10% of the time is the Sixers... which isn't surprising as they are a team comprised almost entirely of big men.

The Sixers have a winning percentage of .610. The Suns have a (winning?) percentage of .400.

I guess there is something to having big men who post up.

For most of that decade the team has been undersized and playing stretches of small ball. That has not worked either. IMO, it's not about either. It's simply talent. Talent will conquer all. This team needs another major peace and badly.

It actually needs at least four pieces badly - starting power forward, back-up power forward, back-up shooting guard and back-up point guard. And it needs a GM to acquire those pieces who realizes that there is more to basketball than shooting.

I was referring to a major piece. All teams in the NBA would love to have competent backups.

Major piece won't do much good if our entire bench, outside of a single defensive specialist, remains total crap.

James Jones, is that you? :)

How about, "Good teams in the NBA have competent backups." That is part of the job of a talented General Manager.

What do you think happens if your starting 5 get worked every night?

James Jones? How about every GM on the planet. They all want a good bench. There isn't enough guys to go around in this league for that. I will settle for competent with maybe one guy who gets hot every other night.

A few good ideas in this thread but its the Suns front office. You all know how it works.

We will be sitting here on Feb 6th scratching our heads having just signed a 50 year old Luc Longley to a 7 year 200 mil contract.

Id rather have Courtney Love than Kevin.

If we dont go all in on KAT its time to assume the position and just Take It like a true Suns fan. Be sure to keep one hand free so you can wave buh bye to Booker on his way to the frozen north.

GREAT pickup in Teague. He is a legit backup PG (13.2 PPG/6.1 assists). The team that just burned us has just added a legit backup PG who can hit the three off the bench. All they had to give up was Allen Crabbe?!?!?!?!?

WOW.

PAGING JAMES JONES!!!!!

Neither franchise will ever go Anywhere with Towns in the long run. He's a one end threat.

James Jones is a buffoon. I wouldn't count on him doing anything further to improve this team...ever...
