110 million, 6 years, 60+ guaranteed. I think he is overrated... big time. They played better with Alex Smith. Their offensive line and defense is what makes them great. Colin is just the lucky goon who got to cash in on it. When that team suffers some real adversity I think he will fall apart and the Niners will be stuck holding the check.

Nice. There due for some cap issues.

Like you I don't really think he that good I expected him to make a major leap last year and if anything he was a little worse.

I don't understand how you pay a guy with 31 career TD's (regular season), 126 million with 61 million guaranteed. That is 3m/year more than Peyton Manning and 7m/year more than Aaron Rodgers!

I am happy to see the 49ers overpay but jeez...this is insane.

Truth and sanity will be found in the details when they come out.

But, for one thing, the guarantees are paid annually and are dependent on being on the roster.

So, every year beyond the first year or two they can walk away.

As far as I know, guaranteed money is just that (guaranteed no matter what). If it is 60+ million guaranteed, he get paid that amount even if they cut him next year.

I have very little faith in pumpernickel or Wilson turning into great quarterbacks so I like seeing them break the bank for division rivals

Sorry, that's simply not the case.

The only amounts, as a general rule, that are absolutely guaranteed is the signing bonus and year one salary.

All other guarantees are with caveats.

Read the story.

There's guarantee and there absolutely guaranteed.

Dweed was guaranteed a $10m bonus in March, but the Cards could have refused to pay, making him a free agent. The price would simply have been the accelerated cost of what remained of his original pro-rated bonus.

The only league working under a CAP system that actually has guaranteed contracts is the NHL.

In a few days, overthecap will have the details of the deal and you'll note a number of caveats regarding the so called guarantees.

This is a head-scratcher for sure. He's a single read then tuck it and scramble guy. Can't imagine the 49ers are going to want or game plan for the big money guy to take off scrambling. Risky deal for too many years. He's not shown he can control the offense from the pocket---more chance that this will come back to haunt the Whiners than be a good deal.

Imagine if we had back-to-back trips to the NFC championship with a young QB, and then decided to not extend them. ANY fan base would go completely ape-crap if they let a QB with that resume go.

I think you're selling the kid short on his talent!

Is he a top 5 QB? Hell no, but I'd bank my future on him as a HC over thinking Logan Thomas is the answer anyday, all day!!! He's also somewhat handcuffed statwise because of the offense he plays in. I seem to remember he's played pretty well against us & kicked our A 3 times as well :D

Yep, he got extended, didn't he?

Yes he did, but it really didn't pan out for the Jets.

I'm not going to complain though if the 49ers want to give the richest contract in NFL history to a QB that lead the team which finished 30th in passing.

Oh, I agree. And, I hope this bites the Niners harder than the Jets got bit by the Sanchez extension.

I guess the point I was trying to make is I can't think of any team that would not have extended him in the same situation. I guarantee this board would be screaming bloody murder if we let Kaepernick walk if we had the same two seasons they just did. We could be 32nd in passing, and that would still be true.

In fairness the board screams bloody murder over a 4th round pick.

Can't let those in the fan base who go ape-crap over a necessary decision determine the financial stablity of the team for years to come. We had a few on this forum going ape-crap over the decision not to pay Dansby---it was a sound decision when it was made and is still a sound decision. To match Clevelands offer would have been crazy. Even if you knew the DWeed fiasco to come. Ditto this money tossed to Kap. The jury is still out as to whether he is a franchise QB or if we are witness to a good supporting cast elevating the QB. The talent surrounding the QB made both of their last two starting QBs look pretty good.

I agree with SunsTzu and the comparison with the early money tossed at Sanchez. Also agree with the Prisco article on the signing:
