......LOL.

To get back to the thread topic...............uh, good luck with all that Niners.

Lot of money to a really young QB. Bold move.

But, that is the price of doing business in the NFL. I think they overpaid, but then again Kaepernick is a different type of QB.

Wait and see for me.

Yet, my reaction without really thinking about it, is that they payed way too much.

And yet it might be a bargain compared to the $25 mil/yr QB that's probably gonna happen in the next few years. With the possibility of playoff expansion & more regular season games on the horizon I can see the cap jumping up $15 mil/yr shortly an thus QB salaries...it's just a matter of time!

I think it's interesting because he was in the news in a bad way this offseason. Now he's not charged with anything but if the fame he's gotten already has gotten to him a bit, and there's been lots of talk it has, imagine what a contract like this one might do to him?

Russell Wilson is licking his chops somewhere right now. He should get more than Newton but both are going to get something north of what CK just got. I'm sure guys like Manning & Brees are shaking their head but they are too classy to ask for more money now.

DJ,

The Cardinals main problems is that they have had A LOT of dead money against the cap, and have given out some big contracts......just big contracts to the wrong people.

Dead Money:
Seattle - $8,475,008
SF - $3,524,120
Arz - $13,107,578

And last year the Cardinals had over $18 million in dead money.

That is why Seattle, and SF seem to be able to offer contracts.

It is also why Keim keeps talking about 2015 when the dead money figure will be down to a more "normal" level. Next season the Cardinals are currently looking at about $3 million in dead money, so they gain $10 million just by managing the cap better.

How do we get in these situations ? Rod Graves puts us in this type of situation. Top Dead Money players for 2014 ?

Levi Brown - $6,514,191
Adam Snyder - $3,000,000
Daryn Colledge - $2,275,000

What is worse ? 2 out of those 3 players were utterly worthless. Adam Snyder was maybe the worse signing that I can remember in a long, long time.

Going back to next year and dead money. As stated above, the Cardinals will have Daryn College's contract still on the books, a little easier to swallow since College actually did something while here. He is going to be about 2.5 million against the cap.

The sore subject that will come up is, what in the blazes do the Cardinals do with DWaste ? I don't know how this will all work out with the legal issues, suspension issues, etc., etc. But based strictly on the numbers it is going to really hurt the Cardinals cap wise to cut Washington before 2016.

If they cut Washington next year, and there is no relief gained by the effects of Washington's suspension and off-field issues, then by cutting Washington his contract would still count 5.5 million against the 2015 cap, and cost 11.5 million in dead money, which if they do a June 1st cut they can divide over two seasons at about 5.75 million each.

Thus if Washington is cut next season, and the numbers stay what they are then the Cardinals will at least have $9 million in dead money next season. Yes, the team gains 4 million just by having less money, but that is 5.5 million that cannot be used, and that is good chunk of money in the NFL, IMHO.

Thus why Washington's situation is so damaging. Hurts on the field, off the field, and against the cap.

It is also the reason why the Cardinals don't have money to pay Karlos Dansby.

So while some select posters bash Steve Keim for not resigning Dansby, it is truly Rod Graves that prevented that from happening.

Thanks for putting in the work to explain the salary cap issues. To be a modern fan of the NFL requires a law degree and the expertise of a financial advisor to a major business corporation. Miss the days of enjoying the game and watching a great pass or game-saving tackle. Now, it is how many millions do we pay that guy to keep playing for us.

They still have to deal with Fitz's contract next year. If he isn't willing to take a straight up pay cut and the Cards release him there could be significant dead money from that deal.

The more I hear the talking heads say how easily the 49'ers can get out of this contract if need be , the more it looks like a Flim-Flam deal designed to appear as this huge contract . I have to wonder how many times these three words "IF" "AND" "BUT" are written into the contract .

Thanks. As I said this stuff give me a headache. Especially when I see the 49ers have 13 players with over $5 million in average salary and the Cards have 6 but we have had cap trouble and they don't.

Dead Money.

To be honest, I would just pay Fitz the salary and deal with it for another two years.

And again, because Daryl Washington is going to be cut sooner or later, but then cutting Fitzgerald, you are talking about the Dead Money for the Cardinals going back over $10 million for both 2015, and 2016, and that is just for those two players. For 2015, you add in College and you are talking $13 million in dead money for 2015.

...and those who talk about cutting Dockett ? Not gonna happen. Not next year, that is for sure. Cause that is at least another $1.5 million against the cap for 2015, and 2016.

At this point the Cardinals would be better off just paying Fitzgerald his ridiculous contract numbers over the next two seasons, and then dealing with his contract.

If Washington's huge contract wasn't in there to screw things up then the Cardinals could play with cutting Fitzgerald need be next year, but cutting both Washington and Fitzgerald is either 20 million in dead money in 2015, or $10 million in dead money for both 2015 and 2016.

Did the Cards just sign him or the Niners? I get he has brought some success but the Niners overpaid IMO. I don't care how long they took to contemplate the deal. I think they have been looking for a QB for so long that after the Alex Smith saga they are desperate to cling to any success at that position.

QB contracts are only going up. Guess the Whiners figured to sign Kap now, hope he does well, and not be trying to sign him after a good year. Other QBs are going to want to top Kaps deal---can't imagine what Luck and, if he returns to health, RGIII are going to command.

Still guys, the Kaps of the world are the running, less cerebral QBs of the future. Have fun finding another pocket QB like Andrew Luck. In this context it makes sense, especially when all the money does not have to be paid to the goofy looking Kap lol

He has the poorest QB skills among all the NFCW starters.
He could develop into an elite guy sure, but he's no where near that at this point. He's a one-read and scramble QB who's head and shoulders above everyone else in terms of athleticism. He's also a strong competitor.

This is why I think Logan Thomas can turn into a good starter. I think he has better skills & throws a better ball than Kap. Also a better FB I.Q. imwho.

This, with the quality of play of the QB position in college and the carry over effect to the NFL which is just starting to take form... Thomas has a 50/50 shot to make it, 10 years ago I would say he stood no chance :)

I don't get what you mean by better skills?

If you mean better runner it's not even close, Kap 6.9 yards per carry for his college career, Thomas 2.7, Kap was 7 or higher all 3 years as a starter, Thomas' career best was 3.7 in 6 carries as a frosh, his average went down ever year in college.

As for throws a better ball, Kap had a higher comp %, higher YPA and just over half the INT's in about the same number of attempts.

I think it's fair to say Thomas played against better competition than Kap did but it seems like better skills is more opinion than anything else.

I think his throwing motion is better than Kap's was coming out of college, but then Kap was a true running QB, he ran for over 4000 yards in college, Thomas just under 1400. Kap's senior year he ran for 150 less yards than Thomas did in his entire career.

The things that concern me about Thomas' ability to get better:

1)his ball placement which I think is a defining characteristic of accuracy. He's highly innacurate. Many times I was like "who is he throwing too?

2) he's a turnover machine including lots of fumbles

3) I rarely saw him put his team on his back & carry them thru adversity of games, which is another huge characteristic of the good QBs

4) he seemed always locked onto a receiver in the games I saw
5) and as Mike Mayock said, "I saw him have 3 good games & 27 bad ones! Ugh
In all the games I saw him play which was probably in the neighborhood of 12-15, I saw 1 the Miami game.

I'll be shocked if he's any better than Skelton as the nfl level

Apparently he's not a 1-read quarterback vs us!

Bucky, he sucked on purpose so Arians could draft him in the fourth... it is all part of the plan which does not follow 'the system' lol

Me too.

I don't think I'm smarter than the NFL guys, but damn, they screw up every year with picks. Even the Pats. I don't know how the Cards fell in love with Thomas in the first place. He looked damned poor to me, I never dreamed we would try to make him the heir to Palmer. Especially when we had damn Manziel and Bridgewater to choose from at our first round pick. You know, guys who actually had special games on big stages in college. Damn. :bang:

I agree. Even Luck isn't an old style pocket passer. The new rule concerning intentional grounding has changed the game. Used to be you had to have a receiver in the area where you chucked it. Now once you are outside the tackle box you can just throw the ball away anywhere and instead of a 5-10 yard loss via a sack you are back at the original LOS. Luck, Wilson and Kprenick are awesome at this. I'm betting Manziel will be as well.

I know nothing about the kid. I don't follow a lot of college. I watch it all the time on Saturdays, usually all day. But they show local schools and big games. I didn't exactly see a lot of Logan Thomas. I looked up highlights and stats, that's about all I got. But of course highlights only make them look better. And they worked on me. That kid has a HUGE arm. He can run too, watched him just truck DBs and LBs alike. If he gets the mental part down, and it's a huge "if", I think we will have scored big time with him
