It's hilarious to me that people here are so desperate for the 49ers to lose ground (instead of us gaining it) that they believe that somehow the organization that fit Vernon Davis, Patrick Willis, and Frank Gore under their salary cap while still finding ways to give extensions to Joe Staley, Novorro Bowman, and Anquan Boldin are suddenly going to be surprised by the impact of the contract that they've been negotiating for the last six months.

Give me a break, guys.

Yep the Niners aren't going anywhere in the next few years anyway & if KAP is the guy, they're not going anywhere for years & years

I know it's a little differant but Didn't the broncos just give 14 Brinks trucks full of $$$ to all the FA's they signed? ;)

Read the story.

There's guarantee and there absolutely guaranteed.

Dweed was guaranteed a $10m bonus in March, but the Cards could have refused to pay, making him a free agent. The price would simply have been the accelerated cost of what remained of his original pro-rated bonus.

The only league working under a CAP system that actually has guaranteed contracts is the NHL.

In a few days, overthecap will have the details of the deal and you'll note a number of caveats regarding the so called guarantees.
the most simple explanation of it I found was in this one sentence:
If a team releases a player before paying part of that player's guaranteed salary or guaranteed bonus, the team still must pay that money
now whether what was reported as "guaranteed" is in fact what really IS guaranteed, I don't know. But it seemed clear, to me at least, that guaranteed money MUST be paid. Which is why we're still paying Levi Brown, Adam Snyder (2 years later), Daryn Colledge (who I honestly wouldn't mind picking back up at RG), etc.

Which person on the Cardinal fan forum is the one who wants the 49ers to lose ground while also not wanting us to gain ground? You can wish for one or the other if you are a Cardinal fan. Where do you come up with this Fantasy World stuff---you have been On the Road for too long.

Check some of the fan posting on the 49er fan forum. They are as conflicted about the big contract and what it means to their future cap situation as some of the Card fans. Card fans are discussing it here . . . but the Whiner fans are worried:

That photo is making the rounds on the Whiner Fan Forum. Even with that bag of money, Kap can't stay in the pocket and is off and running.

Where did he write that? Why don't you respond to what he actually wrote.

You're right. He wasn't attributing that to just one person, he used 'people.' It is not just one person who wants the 49ers to lose ground but also not worry about us gaining ground---it is an entire raving horde of people. Some of them on this forum. Probably part of the Zombie takeover.

This is a head-scratcher for sure. He's a single read then tuck it and scramble guy. Can't imagine the 49ers are going to want or game plan for the big money guy to take off scrambling. Risky deal for too many years. He's not shown he can control the offense from the pocket---more chance that this will come back to haunt the Whiners than be a good deal.

Exactly my take. Too much too soon.

Funny. But the thing that chaps me is how teams like the 49ers manage to sign contracts like these and never seem to have cap problems while we have to let Dan$by go because we can't guarantee him $10 million.

I asked the same question last year with Willis and Bowman's huge contracts. The answer was that SF didn't have to pay their QB anything. And now this. The NFL cap structure gives me headaches.

Well, other than the $12m signing bonus, his year one salary and a $100k workout bonus, you'll note when the full details come out there's an 'if' associated with all future 'guarantees'.

We have 4 contracts with over $8m CAP hits. The Niners have none and only two over $7m.

Lots of fluff likely in Kaepernick deal

1. How much is fully guaranteed to Kaepernick at signing?

2. Does the fully guaranteed money include all or part of his base salaries in future years? Typically, the presence of fully guaranteed base salaries in future years guarantees that the player will be with the team until that money is earned, since it will be paid whether he’s on the team or not.

3. For any injury-only guarantees that convert in the future to fully guaranteed money, is the trigger tied to the start of the waiver period after the Super Bowl or the start of the league year in March? The unwritten rule is that teams won’t cut players with guarantee triggers based on the start of the waiver period, but that it’s fair game to cut players whose guarantees convert after the start of the league year.

4. How much money is tied to escalators and incentives?

5. For any escalators and incentives, what are the triggers to unlock the extra money?

6. How much money hinges on per-game roster bonuses, which aren’t paid if the player can’t play?

7. What are the cap numbers for each year of the deal?

8. What is the cap hit for cutting or trading Kaepernick in any given year of the contract?

9. How much cash gets paid in the first year, second year, and third year of the deal?

10. Does the deal tie the team’s hands for multiple seasons or is it a year-to-year deal?

It's all about contract structure! The niners are spending more than us even with those Cards big $$$ contracts But we do have some serious dead $$$ were as they don't

Graves buried us dude. Keim said when he took over that it would be til 2015 for us to be in the cap position he wanted us to be in. The stuff he's pulled in the meantime have been basically icing on the cake. Especially locking in a great LT, when we weren't supposed to be in any sort of position to make any moves. We got lucky and I'm extremely happy with how our essentially "probation" cap period has been

We'll see how it all plays out. I'm no cap expert, I didn't stay at a holiday inn express, I just know what I read... and even then don't know all that much

He's been pretty good in the playoffs other than the 4th qtr vs Seattle. He's 4-2 and the Niners have given up 135 points in those 6 games. Far from the defense carrying them.

For much of last season, the 'Niners' seemed to be laboring under the weight of Jim Harbaugh at the helm. By that, I mean that at several points, the roster seemed to be about full to over-full of his leadership. I also feel that some in ownership were also tiring of Harbaugh's antics.

Having a brash young, (run and gun) QB becoming very comfortable with the huge payday, might be just the dry tinderpile that sets off the explosion that causes Harbaugh to blow his ship right out of the water. I am not making a prediction on this point, but I AM going on record to say that this might be worth watching for during this upcoming season. I seem to recall that several of the leading players for Harbaugh were becoming disgusted with this tirades as last year progressed.

Wow... Just raised the salary scale waaaaay up for QBs... This kind of deal is bad for the league, IMO.

He has the poorest QB skills among all the NFCW starters.
He could develop into an elite guy sure, but he's no where near that at this point. He's a one-read and scramble QB who's head and shoulders above everyone else in terms of athleticism. He's also a strong competitor.

You know, this contract reminds of a team called the Cardinals when they gave a certain QB named Plummer a huge contract :)

Kaepernick is not beating anybody with his arm and another year, or two, of pounding will likely diminish his running ability. If they don't win it all within 2 years, it will be a bad contract. If they do win it, it will be worth it.

DJ,

The Cardinals main problems is that they have had A LOT of dead money against the cap, and have given out some big contracts......just big contracts to the wrong people.

Dead Money:
Seattle - $8,475,008
SF - $3,524,120
Arz - $13,107,578

And last year the Cardinals had over $18 million in dead money.

That is why Seattle, and SF seem to be able to offer contracts.

It is also why Keim keeps talking about 2015 when the dead money figure will be down to a more "normal" level. Next season the Cardinals are currently looking at about $3 million in dead money, so they gain $10 million just by managing the cap better.

How do we get in these situations ? Rod Graves puts us in this type of situation. Top Dead Money players for 2014 ?

Levi Brown - $6,514,191
Adam Snyder - $3,000,000
Daryn Colledge - $2,275,000

What is worse ? 2 out of those 3 players were utterly worthless. Adam Snyder was maybe the worse signing that I can remember in a long, long time.

Going back to next year and dead money. As stated above, the Cardinals will have Daryn College's contract still on the books, a little easier to swallow since College actually did something while here. He is going to be about 2.5 million against the cap.

The sore subject that will come up is, what in the blazes do the Cardinals do with DWaste ? I don't know how this will all work out with the legal issues, suspension issues, etc., etc. But based strictly on the numbers it is going to really hurt the Cardinals cap wise to cut Washington before 2016.

If they cut Washington next year, and there is no relief gained by the effects of Washington's suspension and off-field issues, then by cutting Washington his contract would still count 5.5 million against the 2015 cap, and cost 11.5 million in dead money, which if they do a June 1st cut they can divide over two seasons at about 5.75 million each.

Thus if Washington is cut next season, and the numbers stay what they are then the Cardinals will at least have $9 million in dead money next season. Yes, the team gains 4 million just by having less money, but that is 5.5 million that cannot be used, and that is good chunk of money in the NFL, IMHO.

Thus why Washington's situation is so damaging. Hurts on the field, off the field, and against the cap.

It is also the reason why the Cardinals don't have money to pay Karlos Dansby.

So while some select posters bash Steve Keim for not resigning Dansby, it is truly Rod Graves that prevented that from happening.
