many thanks for ajcardsfan for getting me this link.

http://www.angelfire.com/fl/TheCard/chron/chron6.html

after reading this i am all the more embarrassed to be a cardinals fan. now i understand, we just took advantage of the rules as they then existed, but MY GOD MAN does our '25 championship look shady!

'specially when you consider that Mr. O'Brien refused the '25 championship trophy and the insinuation that the only intent on winning the title was to attract the Grange barn-stormers, thereby chasing more revenue . . . hmm . . . sounds familiar, don't it? but at least the old school cards chased cash by winning!

i think the asfn board should reach out to the people of pottsville. it may be our only chance to rid ourselves of the curse. we need to take up a collection on the board, have a copy of the '25 trophy made with the "Pottsville Maroons" inscribed and send it to Pottsville's mayor. who's with me?

we could also include an asfn t-shirt. i bet, if nothing else, we get some interesting press.

Man, that sucks. One of the few threads of pride you have as a cardinals fan is found in the ancient history of the NFL. And now it seems that history and pride is a little tainted for me.

I say give Pottsville their title. We could use the karma.

What tradition would that be?

The losing tradition?

The perception of being cheap?

The perception of having bad drafts, bad player personel moves,,,

Or maybe it is the tradition of

Cutting players who have been diaganosed with Cancer (Gedney) and taking away his insurance

or

the tradition of signing a over-the-hill RB to sell tickets,

or

Bitching about realignment when every other team and owner "OK'd" it?

or

Demanding Dallas be on the schedule, regardless of NFL scheduling, in order to sell tickets,

or

maybe the tradition of mishandling the stadium initiatives,

or

the perception that the Cardinals screwed ASU out of revenue,

All the above accusations, whether right or wrong, all help to shape the perception of this team, franchise, and its owners. Just because YOU think they should keep the name doesnt make it right! In fact I would venture to say, in this day and age, it isnt just something that should be done, but something it NEEDS to be done

They didn't demand that the Cowboys be on the regular season schedule, however the Cards and Dallas wanted to preserve the rivalry in the preseason. Preseason scheduling involves teams playing other non division teams in the same regional area. It fits that criteria.

Can you name another "over-the-hill" running back that they have signed to sell tickets?

That is hardly a tradition.

Hey people, I'm about 45 mins. from Pottsville. You want to see a curse, you should see this area. I live 5 min. from Jim Thorpe PA. It was called Mauch Chunk at one time, but now, to most of us, it just seems to be a hole in the Ground.

But if your into Old Buildings, Trains, a couple of Mansions, Haunted Sites and seeing the grave site of Jim Thorpe Himself it's a good place to visit.

You're right. Equal time for the '47 squad......

http://www.angelfire.com/fl/TheCard/chron/chron13.html

Lot's of interesting reading in there too. The Cards had the highest paid player ever at that time....Trippi. He scored key TD's in that game. I wonder if there is a connection between paying high salaries and winning? Also, notice the football decisions were not made by a Bidwill! Could that also be important?

But, best of all, the article points out we are one of only four teams (after Green Bay's loss to the Falcons this past playoffs) to have never lost a home playoff game!

That little fact will win you some drinks at the bar ! :)

Umm Dallas wanted to preserve the rivalry? Are you kidding me? Trust me when I tell you Jerry Jones could give a rats ass whether he ever played the Cards again. It wasnt a rivalry for the Cowboys.

All it takes is one...my point being that its all about perception. You think anyone thinks the Cards signed Emmitt b/c they thought he still had it?? Thats naive!

Actually, Jones was quoted after closing the preseason game deal with the Cards (to payoff Bidwill for his realignment to the NFC West) that it was important to him that the Cowboys continue to play the Cardinals. Of course, the main motivation is not the "rivalry". It's the fact that Phoenix is the biggest market of Cowboys fans outside of Texas. But, it's undeniable that he gives a "rats ass" about playing the Cards, no matter the motivation.

Maybe so...I was in Dallas quite a bit when all this was taking place and no one really cared the Cardinals where leaving the NFC East. Of course you heard a lot of "There goes 2 wins a season" crap.

However, I do remember that Bidwill did hold up realignment on this issue with his concerns over not playing the cowboys any longer (he called it rivalry, everyone knew it was money)

Regardless, my point is the same, there was a lot of flack coming down b/c the Cardinals, specifically Bidwill, held up the "OK" on this with his insistance on the Cowboy issue.

You dont think the NFL owners remeber this type of thing??

I do. I also think most of them like the old guy. In the sense of having a crazy, but harmless, uncle to compete with for the inheritance.

They do like Bidwill. He'll get the Super Bowl on October 30th. Do you think Al Davis will ever host that game?

damnit! no one's addressing my obvious cure for the cards here!

I'M SERIOUS! LET'S POOL SOME $$$ AND BUY A REPLICA TROPHY AND SEND IT TO POTTSVILLE'S MAYOR!

i'm sure this would be less than trying to put together a team of investors to purchase 51% of the cards or taking out a full page ad in the republic.

i'm willing to chip in $50 to get the ball rolling here. if we get good response and i find that the trophy is more expensive, i'd be willing to up my ante. please respond with the amount you'd be willing to fork over and i'll look into what the original trophy looked like and what it'd cost to get a replica. i may start another thread. in fact, i will, post your pledge there.

If we would buy a replica trophy and send it to Pottsville would that do it? I would think that to truly remove any curse the original trophy would have to be sent.

Or do you guys just want to deliver it personal so you can visit the oldest Brewery in the Country?

i recommend the replica 'cuz i just don't think we have the cajones to steal the original.

and visiting the oldest brewery in the country might be just what the doc ordered for this asfn crew of misfits. we'd all have to wear our asfn t-shirts and get stinkin' drunk and bed all the attractive women in town - you know, get the whole town hoppin' mad so they're stunned the next day when we award them the trophy.

I was debating in my head if we have the authority to remove a curse, since we are just fans and not the league, the league that caused a curse if it exists. But if you think about it, we the fans are the ones who suffer from the curse if it exists, not the league. We are also the ones that take pride in a championship that was not meant for us, not the league. So basically if there was any group to truly represent the Cards in not acknowledging the Championship it would be here, because basically this is were all the biggest Cardinal fans on Earth meet. So maybe this is not such a far fetched idea. I think besides a trophy we should have a petetion signed by all of us denouncing the trophy as well to go along with the trophy, maybe we could all send someone our signatures and paste them on,a long sheet of paper, officially not recognizing the title.

hold on here, let's not get too crazy! i wanna do something to increase our good karma, but let's not give away the farm! i say we hold onto our championship while acknowledging that the Maroons (what a maroon!) have a claim to legitimacy as well. i think it's rather big of us.
