I'm kind of surprised people think we'll be able to fill our PG hole better through the draft than a trade. I don't know if we'll get a starter or not, probably not, but short of drafting Young of Shai, we won't be adding a guy that is more than a backup PG through the draft. The dropoff in PG's this year in the draft after the top 3-4 is pretty far. It goes from potential stars in Young and Doncic, decent starters in Shai and Sexton, and then maybe 2nd string players like Holiday, Brunson, etc. The guys beyond Shai and Sexton won't be more than backups and they may not be ready to step into a backup role next year if we keep Payton, we'll have Knight already and they'll need to beat out Ulis, Canaan, and Harrison to be our 3rd string PG.

I'd rather trade for a PG that is at least around Payton's level, who would be cheaper this season, allowing us to spend more elsewhere in free agency.

It's not really that. It's just that some of us consider using significant assets to acquire Dunn, Jones, Brogdon, Dinwiddie or Rozier to be a misstep. IMO they are the kind of backup point guards every team wishes they had but few teams would want any of them as a starter.

I'd like to develop a PG behind a veteran. Although Payton was a huge improvement over what the Suns had at PG, I don't think he is the long term answer. I don't count on Knight as a PG.
I wish he WAS the long term answer. It would make things a lot easier right now.

Trading a pick for a competent starter isn't "significant assets". The #16 is likely to be a dud based on the odds. Why not turn the #16 into a proven commodity?

I think adding even a decent backup PG will help us more than the 16th pick will help this team. Like @Krangthebrain said, I don't see the 16 as a significant asset. If that were our only pick then maybe it would be more valuable but it's sort of a freebie right now. We'll be adding the #1 overall pick and that's our big draft takeaway. A player we trade for would be rotation ready, which can't be said about who we'll end up selecting at 16. We may do better, we may not, I'd rather go for the sure thing.

We'll need to address PG eventually, I'd rather lose #16 than future picks to address that need. If there were better PG's available in this year's free agency crop I'd feel better about trying to fill that hole at the draft and then looking to free agency if we don't. As of now, there aren't a top of options available in free agency. So what options are we left it? I believe trading #16 is the best chance at adding a good PG to our team this offseason.

If we are not getting Young I will be happy with getting Ayton at 1, Lonnie Walker or Miles Bridges at 16 and Duval at 31.

If you remember I had Jayson Tatum at #2 last year and was as high if not higher on Bridges than Jackson. Suns could really use the positional versatility of Bridges as a 3/4.

Duval in my opinion can be the steal of the draft. If he had shown even just an ok jumpshot we would be arguing if he is the best guard in the class. He was a consensus top 7 or so highschool recruit, has good size and length, has a really good handle, very good athleticism and is a very good passer. Reminds me of a more athletic Rajon Rondo and I could not ask for more than that at 31.
I love miles bridges. He’s gotten zero attention on this board, but that’s because I believe everyone is certain he’ll get snapped up 2-3 spots before we pick. He will be tantalizingly close but we won’t get him.

Shocked to see young projections slipping so far. Just saw him at 12. 12!!!! Clips wouldn’t trade him to us, so have to try to trade up to 11 if he drops.

And I see Robert Williams dropping past 16. I would snag him too.

Because the trades I'm arguing against are the ones involving the 16 plus additional assets (such as the 16, 59, Ulis and WIlliams for Jones suggestion).

I'm okay trading the 16 for any of the recent names we've talked about here, 16 isn't bad value for a quality backup point guard. But I'd rather combine it and use that package to acquire a real starter. We already have a stable of backup guards and a couple of them have the potential to become decent backups.

I'll tell ya, it was this kind of thinking that turned me into the Tip King every time I went to Vegas. I'd rather my Suns be smarter than I was. There is no reason to treat this 16 pick as anything less than the 16th pick.

OH man. I totally agree. Blowing free money is the quickest path to poverty there is.

While that is true almost every year, it's not true this one. Very rarely have we seen a talent pool this deep. I've been toying around with scouting since the Shaq/Alonzo draft. This one might be my favorite.

Not all #16s are the same. The #16 pick is worth a heck of a lot more than last year's #16. For example, Ntilikina (a player I liked) went 8th last year. This year I'd put him after Zhaire Smith, Kevin Huerter, and Jerome Robinson. And yet one of these guys will likely go in the 20's. Stated differently, the #16 pick will garner a top 10 prospect in most years.

This is the ABSOLUTE best year to have multiple 1st round picks. At #16 we might have the luxury of drafting Miles Bridges, Mikal Bridges, Shai, Lonnie Walker, or Jerome Robinson. That is an insanely talented group to possibly be available at #16.

If we trade 16 in a trade for an experienced PG it better be Kemba and not a glorified backup like Tyus Jones that barely moves the needle.

Dinwiddie had a good two months or so and nothing more.

It's conceivable for us to walk away with:

#1. Deandre Ayton
#16. Jerome Robinson
#31. Landry Shamet
#59 Jevon Carter (He's estimated to go late)

That's one heck of a haul.

Not a fan of the last 3 picks

Ayton

16 Walker or Bridges

31 Duval or Okobo

59 Giannis brother

This would be perfect for me. Even trading up for Young wouldn‘t make me more happy.

Okobo is a guy I've been really interested in, even before his explosion a few weeks ago. Have you seen him?

What are the odds of the Suns actually picking that guy?

Not much of what isn‘t available to everyone

But he is that rare Euro talent without an inflated draft stock that has actually shown potential and is a star or key player for his team.

He is a bit older but clearly better than Ntilikina or Luwawu who sonehow went lottery.

Which Bridges?

Gotta admit I haven't considered Walker much. I am prejudiced against big hair.

Miles Bridges, but I like both and Miles stock seems lower and I like his potential as a small ball 4. Pj Tucker with talent and athleticism

Scott Bordow in his latest mock has the Suns drafting Aaron Holiday at #16 if they keep the pick.

16. Suns (21-61) via Heat: PG Aaron Holiday, 6-1, 185, UCLA

Phoenix likely will try to move back up in the lottery to acquire a point guard, or it could trade back in a deal that will net it a veteran role player. If the Suns stick at No. 16, we’re returning to the educated guess that Holiday will be the pick. He was the only player to work out for the Suns twice, he can shoot and defend. Some scouts see him as a backup, but he could be an ideal complementary point guard in a lineup that features Devin Booker, Ayton and Josh Jackson.

I'd be happy with Payton as the Suns starting PG, at least for the foreseeable future. My concern, it has been too quiet concerning Payton. I haven't heard anything about him being actively involved with Suns players. My hope is I simply missed it. With Jackson getting a haircut, it would have been the perfect time for him to get involved.

The Suns have already been through the period where they didn't value draft picks and it didn't work. This has been much discussed. It's one of the reasons the Suns have been in decline.

He’s ranked #46 by the Stepien

https://www.thestepien.com/2018/06/19/jackson-hoys-final-2018-big-board/

He might be a better target arbor #31. Not sure I would pass on Okobo for him.

That would be a totally blah pick if they did it... but yeah, I could see it. They seem to like at least one uninspired choice every draft (Ennis, Reed, etc.).

This pick would not excite me at #16 either. If it were at #31, I would feel better about it.

The idea of drafting Holiday makes me think the Suns are looking to draft him at #31. The Suns trading back doesn't make much sense unless a trade is involved.

This draft has a lot of talent even down to #31. Who are you interested trading for at #16?

Please don't say Tyus Jones.
