We forget about this draft for one moment and look ahead in time.

We’ve been hearing for some months now about a new African sensation that has arrived this year to Spain. His name is Serge Jonas Ibaka, from the Congo, the son of basketball players. He was born in 1989 and shows an impressive 6-10 long, ripped body-- a true physical/athletic monster, particularly by the standards we’re used to in Europe.

Youtube offers us a wonderful chance to take a look at him, displaying a pretty spectacular compilation of plays that shows some of his best attributes. Keep an eye on his frame and athleticism, the way he gets off the floor, his ability to play above the rim, his coordination, activity on court, his timing going for the block or his nice stroke. Anyway, the images speak for themselves.

Ibaka is signed through 2011 with L’Hospitalet, LEB team. In the few months he’s spent in Spain, he has already played some games with the junior squad and also joined the Joventut U-20 team for the Final round of the U-20 Spanish Circuit played in Inca a few weeks ago. He also had time to make a trip to Vitoria and work out privately for Tau, which probably means that there are chances he can get out of his contract in the mid-term future. This summer, Ibaka will likely go to the USA to work on his game, and for the next season he’s expected to play in L’Hospitalet’s first team in the LEB (the Spanish second division, although enjoying a better level than many first division leagues across Europe). This is pretty impressive since only two players out of the European Union are allowed per team, and the young Ibaka will fill one of those two key spots (usually spent on American imports).

DraftExpress will try to provide you more detailed information on Ibaka’s game during the following weeks/months. Just consider this piece as a quick introduction to a name worthy to remember.

He is big for his age as you can see by everyone he is playing with. But not sure how he would perform around other 6'10ers

Ricky Rubio is one year younger and plays in ACB for 2 years already. That's what I'd call impressive.

This Ibaka guy is intriguing at best.

Ricky Rubio precocity is phenomenal... You can be impressive without playing the euroleague at 16yo. You sounds like saying Nash is good at best because Wilt or Jordan were what you'd call impressive.

Well that's not really my point but whatever...

I hardly see how a 6'10 18 years old guy could be "impressive" when the only thing he's doing is getting tip-ins and putbacks off his own missed shots over 6'7 spanish junior 2nd league guys.

I may be wrong but I call that "a guy with intriguing physical abilites that may be someday able to play NBA ball", not an impressive guy. I've seen countless videos of guys with that kind of potential that never done squat in any league, so I'd wait at least 2 years before being somewhat enthusiastic about him.

Actually I don't know this guy... you are probably right... but Ricky is not impressive... he is ****ing impressive... he not only play in ACB and Euroleague at 16yo he already makes things happens on defense, when he is on the floor the game change. I don't know how Ricky will do in the NBA in the future but his ascension should be quiet exciting to follow.

Please show me videos of more 17 year olds with that size, athleticism, anticipation and shooting touch. He even shows pretty good ball handling skills.

This is no different from highschool players..

Wow. I did not see the elevation I was expecting. This guy will have a hard time finding a position in pro ball.

This kid makes Yi look like Jordan. I couldn't even see him getting drafted.

Found some more info on this guy. His elevation blows your theories out of the water.

He was rated with the highest vert leap in 2007 camp. From other stuff Ive researched it seems he has great shooting mechanics already, hustles like a beast, and is as athletic as they come. nbadraft.net has him going around the time that the atlanta pick is currently expected to fall. I say we keep an eye on him.

In a van...down by the river.
I'm not a guru when it comes to evaluating talent but i was most impressed with his form & touch from the FT line for a young big man. He wasn't shot-putting it and he had some arc on it. His balance and footwork in the lane was pretty bad though.

he looks like a raw version of a chris bosh type....very athletic, good shooting touch, good shot-blocking, excellent hustle, good jumping ability and speed, good length, and very active. it looks like he needs to work on footwork as mojo mentioned but he's certainly a good prospect for a team like the Suns

He would make a great tandem with Amare in 2 years time. Not having to teach a big how to jumpshoot/freethrow is amazingly valuable. Would be nice to having something to compete against the future oden/aldrige duo.

He reminds me of Johan Petro/Mouhamed Sene. A little bit too skinny to guard Duncan,Yao, Bynum, etc.
