Here's to C. Richard Coffey...

Dick Coffey was my boss at Calvert Distillers Company back in the day. We used to put on a considerable number of audio-visual presentations - to Seagram ownership and at sales meetings, holiday presentations etc.

Dick was relentless about rehearsing once, twice, three times, four times or even more to make sure you "got it right."

He'd keep you up til 2 am the night before running through the presentation once again.

And he drilled into us the importance of having an extra extension cord and projector bulb - and going into the presentation room while everyone else was eating breakfast to check out the slide carousel for backward or upside down slides (because "sometimes gremlins turn them around overnight.")

We also used to watch a lot presentations - from media reps, market research firms or associates from other company divisions. Whenever one of them would (as often happen) screw up, Dick would catch my eye and wink.

My point - If a well-run organization doesn't want something screwed up, they make certain it isn't.

Cheers, Dick (wherever you are).

Sure they like me, I paid for my season tickets. It is a broken record, and it was spinning yesterday after they botched the Tribute. You keep your accusations to yourself, I'll talk about the Bidwills all I want till they prove me wrong.

Just to clear things up, yesterday (on and off the field) was more then just the usual "broken record syndrome" here in AZ

So it's alright for you to accuse people of things but not alright for me to accuse you of things? You must be a liberal.

You know, I too thought they had started to move in the right direction, but this year has sealed it for me. The one constant in the 60+ years of ineptitude, is the Bidwill family. I'll keep watching from a distance, but I'm done buying tickets, jerseys, etc. Bidwills, for the good of the franchise you proclaim to cherish, please sell, retire, enjoy life, and leave the team in the hands of those who are competent.

They may be tired of losing, but they can't be as frustrated as those of us who are PAYING to watch the losing. I'd be much more tolerant if I was raking it in like Billy and the fam.

One of the first rules of business: @ss-u-me. That and the fact that the buck stops at the top. The Bidwills have hired the people in the organization. Hiding behind their hirees supposed ineptitude doesn't work. Ask yourself one thing; if Jerry Colangelo owned the Cardinals, would they be a perennial doormat, and would they screw up the biggest PR opportunity in the history of the franchise? I think not.

T

And how did Jerry Colangelo fare? He spent most of his personal fortune in order to win the World Series and the very next year, the fans stopped supporting him and he wound up having to sell the team to keep from losing them. Take one for the gipper I suppose.

yeah... I'm sure Colangelo is hurting for cash right now 40 - spent most of his personal fortune? Where are you getting that?

hell, you're not even right with the "very next year..."statement either - the very next year, attendance was still high as the Backs won 100 games but lost in the playoffs because they were a MASH unit... not to mention that he consistently put a winner together eveywhere he went and is retired as one the richest/most successful people (regardless of ownership) in the state.

I'd say he fared pretty damn well. His job was to put a winner on the field and not only did he do that more often than not with any of his teams, but he actually has a ring to go along with it.

From the 9.9.2004 edition of the Phoenix New Times:

Jerry sold the debt-laden Suns earlier this year for $400 million, and everybody made some money -- but nowhere near as much as has been widely reported.

But the Diamondbacks are a different story. Colangelo bet home plate on a premise that turned out to be wrong. He believed mortgaging the future for a 2001 World Series ring would build lasting fan support.

Instead, it's brought us a pitiful team, declining attendance and massive debt. The finances spun out of control years ago. As Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling were sending the Yankees packing in November 2001, Colangelo was desperately courting investors to keep the team financially viable.

Bankruptcy loomed as the Diamondbacks hoisted the 2001 World Series trophy into the air.

Soon after the World Series parade, Colangelo announced that he had rounded up four rich investors who had agreed to pump in $160 million over the next 10 years. The investors gave him carte blanche to spend the money and run the team with one caveat -- stay within budget.

But Jerry didn't come through in 2002 and busted the budget again in 2003.

The freewheeling spending was too much for the investment team led by Paradise Valley resident Ken Kendrick. Earlier this year, Kendrick and his partners agreed to round up another $100 million. But this time, there were some strings attached. Jerry had to share power -- he became just one of five votes in the managing partnership.

Man, talk about a dream job. I would have given my eye teeth to work for a distillery back in my youth. By now, I would have been a broken old man lying drunk in a gutter somewhere, but the trip would have been worth it.:D

From the 9.9.2004 edition of the Phoenix New Times:

40 - do you judge a man's worth monetarily? Is that what you'r egetting at? I thought more of you than to have such a superficial opnion, but considering you're undying support of the B's, I guess it makes a little more sense.

personally, I'll take the owner who does everything in his pwoer to win and judge him that way over the owner who does vitrually nothing in his power to win and values the almighty dollar over everything else anyday of the week. A man is to be judge on the deeds done in his life, not the amount of money in his pocketbook.

There is a middle ground here. I want an Owner who is dedicated to winning, yet is financially savvy. Bob Kraft comes to mind as a businessman who wants it all, to win and make money. There is nothing wrong with that.

you're right - but if you had to choose one or the other (JC or Bidwill), I take the guy who's willing to do everything he can to win and for 28 years, that's what JC did. He stretched himself too thin with two franchises and that was his downfall IMO.

Nope, all I'm pointing out is how poorly the fans treated Colangelo after he nearly bankrupted himself to give this town a winner. In one respect, I admire him for having the guts to do it, but from a business standpoint, it doesn't make a lot of sense. It's just a shame that the fickle fans of Phoenix didn't give him the support he deserved.

Who did I accuse? I stated a fact that the Bidwills botched the Tillman Tribute. Thats not an accusation, it's a fact.

I am far from a liberal. Once again, your accusations hold no water.

Here's another fact- Your an idiot

It had nothing to do with the fans. In fact, the Dbacks were very high up on the MLB attendance list. The final straw was when Colangelo drafted Stephen Drew with the 15th pick (although he was widely regarded as the #1 pick but teams were scared because of his agent, Scott Boras) although his investors told him not to. All the deferred money he owed to players was too much in the investors eyes and they thought they couldn't afford a huge rookie contract in Drews. The investors ran him out, had nothing to do with the "fickle fans."

I wrote an email to the Cardinals - not a nice letter at that -

they called and appologised and we spoke about the problems I see with the stadium. Will any of it be fixed? Who knows, but at least they took the time and someone with some authority knew what she was saying.

Don't know if this is posted already, but the Cardinals said the video will be replayed before Sunday's game against the Lions.
