He certainly looked like the best LB on the field tonight. He deserves time with 1st unit to see if it translates to lots of tackles. He is a bit light but he is definitly fast.

It wasn't his plays that I first noticed. It was that he was running around in the Defense directing other players and making the calls. After seeing that he had the role as "leader" I watched him more carefully. He made the calls and he made the plays. I think the coaches worked him more than any other player on the team.

I wasn't kidding when I said in my report that he was out on the field 40 minutes early a good 15 minutes before any other player getting 1 on 1 instruction from the lber coach about gap assignments. You can tell he was starving to learn!

Like we have all said "it is early" but so far I can totally see why the scouting staff had this kid rated higher on their board than Rolando McClain.

That stat line is amazing. Doesnt even count other pressures.

Exactly Shane, I haven't watched a replay to break down his every move. I do know how long he was out there and how involved he was in the defense. You called it last week.

I had concerns that he was kind of Raw entering the Draft. Now I'm a believer. Dude looks like he will be a stud.

When I saw him in camp I was taken back by his smooth movement, his agility, his footwork and his speed. What I can gather, it looks like in-game, all that came together as a beast! I can't wait to watch the tape on him this weekend.

Count me in the camp, sight unseen (game sight, at least).

Washington has star potential. There are very few linebackers in the league with his level of closing speed, and his leadership skills are apparent. Most importantly, though, he seems to be very disciplined. He rarely, if ever, fell for a playaction or misdirection. A lack of this type of discipline has killed this defense for years. It was only preseason, but I don't think he could have been any more impressive.

Thats what struck me too. Here is a guy that has just a couple weeks of practice and he seemed to be directing everything.

I even saw him talking to the safetys before the snap. He seemed to be even giving indivdual instructions to players that have been in the league for several years.

Amazing.

Washington was amazing in his ability to diagnose plays, and harness his amazing athleticism to be in the right spot and not run out of the play. He was the leader of the defense out there, and only had a couple miscues in his first professional action. I can see why people questioned his ankle tackling, but after watching him it seems like he does this because he gets to spots so quickly that he dives to bring players down before they get started.

If you didn't watch the game, you need to find it replayed on NFL network and watch it. Between Washingon's and Skelton's play, it was very entertaining to watch.

my impressions of Washington from up in section 450 ( I can see plays develop from up there, bird eyes view....)

Washington is not like a lot of young athletic players where they just wanna try to use their athleticism and speed and look out of control. NOT Washington. he waits for the play to develop, is very patient, and then EXPLODES. he had to have at least 3 qb pressures when he saw the qb roll out and just hunted them down. Everyone in my section was commenting at how aggressive and fast to the ball he was.

I'm excited to see him in game 2!

I recorded the game and watched all of the defensive snaps tonight (I watched the game live as well) and he is all over the field! Great closing speed, great instincts, and he's got a nose for the ball/ball carrier. He will definitely need to put on 10 pounds of muscle to help him engage/disengage with olineman in the running game but other than that I love what I saw! You can't teach speed and instincts and he's got them both, I imagine he will be in a starting role by midseason, if not a bit earlier.

As one of Washington's biggest fans on this board before the draft it would be easy to proclaim that i saw him making such a good impact at this premature juncture. I had quite a few back and forth discussions as to how good he was with K9 who was not his biggest fans to say the least.

I still feel K9 was largely wrong in most of his appraisals of Washington, However i do feel some of the problems that K9 highlighted at the time, including his slight frame and possible difficulties in transitioning to dealing with NFL O-linemen, were valid at the time and Daryl still needs to show he is capable of overcoming those issues. I do feel that Washington has both the capability, work rate and competitive nature that he needs to make the transistion and become the real deal.
