OKay, need some help from you experts...I'm about ready to get one of these high def players and I think I want the HD-DVD, I just seem to like all the titles on it more, especially Battlestar Galactica.

SO I'm looking at the Toshiba A3, cause on Amazon it's only $224 and you get 5 free HD DVDs, plus a rebate for 5 more.

http://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-HD-A3..._m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0MHD1K6VFC33MB0V2MA3

I saw one of you say the A3 doesn't have 5.1, but if it has an Optical out, isn't that digital and thus equal to 5.1?

Yes, and no. You can still get dolby digital and DTS from the optical out. It just doesn't have the analog 5.1 outputs. Audiophiles revere these ports, most of the rest of us, couldn't care less.

Okay, cool...at least for my plain self, I'll still get the surround sound I want.

Now, finally...is this a good player? Is it worth investing in HD-DVD? Does it even matter really?

Yes, yes, yes.

IMO it is worth investing. Even if HDDVD goes away, you will have an amazing regular DVD player, and whatever HDDVDs you have will still look amazing. Bluray is more expensive.

Think about it this way, how much did you spend of your first DVD player? What about your first computer?

I think this player will be fine anyways for me, my TV only does 1080i since it's a bit older, so the A3 shouldn't be a problem, and I don't see me upgrading TV's for quite awhile.

Amazon says: Thanks for your order!

Damn, made the plunge.

$241 with shipping

Serenity, Batman Begins and Pride and Prejudice + 300 and Bourne Identity...

And the rebate for 5 more free when it comes.

Not bad.

Sold my never-use-much Xbox 360 for $250, so I just made $9 :)

You chose some great, but cheaper movies. I would have gone with more expensive ones, but congrats on your purchase. Let me know if you have any questions.

I found a cool web site that Reviews HD DVD and Bluray movies. They go into detail about the Video and Audio you will find on these as well as a brief movie review. I've been using it as a guideline to figure out if a movie I already own on DVD was worth me picking it up on HD DVD.

Yeah it's a really cool site. Very informative.

Ordered my first HD DVD yesterday based off a great review from them. "Galapagos" is in the mail! Can't wait for it to get here.

Oh and I also got Digital Video Essentials which isn't a movie but will hopefully help them look much better.

They only gave me a list of like 20 to pick from, they all appeared to be the same price.

No questions yet, but I'm feeling a bit of the "backlash" from seeing some titles I want to watch on BluRay...

By the way, just found out anything I buy on Amazon via ASFN doesn't count at all :(

Sucks, that was a good $20 on this purchase I was getting back :)

Watched Good Fellas for the first time ever and did it on HD-DVD :)

A great movie, but nice to see in high-def.

I hear ya. I got the HDDVD player first. I knew I wanted a PS3 anyway, but when there were titles that I wanted to see on Bluray, it made it VERY easy to get it and become format neutral.
