I'm not a jozy apologist. he is the best forward we have in our pool...unless you are going to take our best midfielder, donovan, and play him there. same could be said for dempsey who plays in the middle. I will say dempsey and donovan are the best two goal scorers we have and then there is a drop.

you are all over buddle, but what has he done? What are these technical skills that you speak of? I'm not impressed by buddle at this point. he doesn't seem to impact the game at all although he hasn't been given much time. I thought he blew some opportunites today and didn't look comfortable at all with the ball at his feet...definitely made much less of an impact than what altidore did. gomez had more impact than buddle did in reality. he had two quality strikes on goal and setup dempsey on the goal that was called back. buddle had the one chance and was unlucky to put it right at the keeper. buddle gave the ball away almost instantly when the ball came to his feet. I was listening to the end of the game on espn radio and tommy smith was ripping buddle for panicking with the ball at his feet late in the game.

I'm not saying jozy is a #1 striker at the international level. He is Team USA's #1 striker...because we have no other options right now. and you have to give the guy some credit. he may not have had success in europe, but he has played well for the US team.

1. 2 goals vs. the Aussies 2 weeks ago??? Almost a hat trick. He set the tone early with that masterful goal from 25 yards out and it really stamped our flag in the ground of that game.

2. His header yesterday was the 3rd or 4th best chance for us to score. He created the shot after a great pass inside the box.

Buddle has been the calm, ball possession guy that Jozy needs while he creates with his body.

Have the defending champions ever failed to advance out of group stages in the following cup?

I didn't see Italy advancing, but i really wouldn't mind seeing some late game drama like we saw yesterday.

It is an understatement to say that Italy is not the same team without Totti. And they are in transition, getting rid of guys that are too old from the 2006 Cup winners.

They will be back.

Never have the previous World Cup finalists both failed to advance in the next tournament when both qualified. France, which lost to Italy on penalty kicks for the 2006 title, went out earlier this week in Group A.
