The moment the spanish guy backheels the ball to Villa he's about half a yard to a yard offside. If the backheeler (i don't know who it was) doesn't touch it's onside.

He touches. Offside.

I don't know what you are seeing. At the time the pass was made, he was even with the rest of the defenders on the line. He was ahead of the player that had him marked of course, but there were 2 or 3 other players that were even with him when the pass was made.

Look at 0:41. If you want to nitpick It's actually twice offside. First the pass to the guy that's gonna backheel the ball. Inches, but very possible. But the second one was more obvious.

I find it strange that every single game so far has had these lines drawn in the replay, but after the last couple of bad calls there was no replay with lines this time.

You're smoking something. The pass to the backheel was even. He came back onsides before the pass was made. For the pass to Villa, focus on the players above the backheel pass. They are further out.

For what it's worth, since we'll never know if this footage has been worked or not. Personally i think that 'line-freeze moment' as to say is a fraction of a second too early, since the other replays show Xavi hitting the ball with the heel of fis foot, not the side, as is suggested here in this movie. The ball has to travel a bit further therefore. In that fraction Villa will only be further upfield and more offside.

By the way, i hate the Portuguese, and i love nothing more than to see them eliminated. And i love Spain, with their brilliant one touch football, so i want nothing more than to see them advance.

Exactly. ESPN has been very, very good at pointing out referee mistakes in this World Cup--the odds on this being some great conspiracy that ESPN is a party to is completely over-the-top.

Of course, you're in the Netherlands and probably don't get ESPN's feed. LOL

No, but i do get BBC's, Germany's, Belgian and Dutch feed, and they're all the same. Dutch TV didn't mention it at the time of the goal, but i had my doubts (tweeted it directly after the goal for those who want proof ;)), but showed one of those lines (self created, since FIFA's wasn't there) in the aftershow.

And im not a conspiracy theorist at all. But isn't it -for instance- NBA policy to not show replays of bad calls? Or at least that's what i've always understood. I just thought it was weird that on such a decisive moment the animated lines, that have been available all through the tournament and also in this game, were not shown. From what i understand, the Lampard 'over the line moment' has been conveniently removed from the highlights of that game on the FIFA website too.

Maybe because prevailing opinion was that it wasn't offside, so why show the lines if it doesn't prove anything? If you watch, most of the time when the lines are shown are after an actual offsides call.

American sporting events are a different animal. They show replays of everything here and on the big screens too. Here, not showing replays on the stadium screens would have been ridiculous--even though I can see why they did it (to prevent violence). That stuff just doesn't happen here.

I'm glad to see americans complaining about FIFA. I have always complained about FIFA and poor officiating. we analyze every referee mistake....and when you have refs that have been caught cheating I think it is only fair to want some type of reform. I think replay is awesome, because we can get the calls right. it's only fair...especially when the technology is there. FIFA not showing replays of a close call is ridiculous. if you are gonna do that at least give the road team a challenge flag lol(sarcasm).

All the criers, divers and whiners are gone (Portugal, Italy, Mexico).
my favorite memory of a whiner was cuatemoc blanco threatening to punch pablo mastreoni when he realized his team was out.

IMO, Villa is even with the far defender when Xavi's pass is made, but the fact that we are debating it, even after seeing the play in slow motion, tells me that the ref made the correct decision.

The benefit of the doubt should go to the attacking team, FIFA even said that.

No games for 2 days? Argh. I guess I might as well get some work done.
