Original Unaltered Star Wars Trilogy on DVD!
Source: Lucasfilm
May 4, 2006

Lucasfilm has announced that this September fans can look forward to the long-awaited DVD release of the original theatrical incarnations of the classic "Star Wars" trilogy!

In response to overwhelming demand, Lucasfilm Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment will release attractively priced individual two-disc releases of "Star Wars," "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi." Each release includes the 2004 digitally remastered version of the movie, as well as the original theatrical edition of the film. That means you'll be able to enjoy "Star Wars" as it first appeared in 1977, "Empire" in 1980, and "Jedi" in 1983.

See the title crawl to "Star Wars" before it was known as "Episode IV"; see the pioneering, if dated, motion control model work on the attack on the Death Star; groove to Lapti Nek or the Ewok Celebration song like you did when you were a kid; and yes, see Han Solo shoot first.

This release will only be available for a limited time: from September 12th to December 31st. The international release will follow on or about the same day. Each original theatrical version will feature Dolby 2.0 Surround sound, close-captioning, and subtitles in English, French and Spanish for their U.S. release. International sound and subtitling vary by territory.

"Over the years, a truly countless number of fans have told us that they would love to see and own the original version that they remember experiencing in theaters," said Jim Ward, President of LucasArts and Senior Vice President of Lucasfilm Ltd. "We returned to the Lucasfilm Archives to search exhaustively for source material that could be presented on DVD. This is something that we're very excited to be able to give to fans in response to their continuing enthusiasm for Star Wars. Topping it off with a new interactive adventure makes September 12 a red-letter day for Star Wars fans."

Wow, BIM - I am really happy for you!

Maybe now they'll release X-Files 2.

This explains the timing of the release...

Imagine what would have been done to these figures had the original trilogy not been released. :D

:jedi:

BTW: The vintage figures look great and already come in a protective case (they run about $11-12).

George Lucas takes on new role: 'Star Wars' action figure
Associated Press
LOS ANGELES -

Not that long ago, in a galaxy right nearby, George Lucas joined forces with the dark side.

The "Star Wars" creator has become a Storm Trooper.

Hasbro, maker of "Star Wars" toys, is paying plastic tribute to Lucas, interpreting him as a limited-edition action figure in Storm Trooper attire.

The head of the toymaker's "Star Wars" division called Lucas "the greatest character in the universe."

"We took a cue from when Han Solo and Luke disguised themselves as Storm Troopers," said Derryl DePriest, marketing director and admitted lifelong "Star Wars" fan. "We placed George in his own universe that he created."

This is the first time Lucas has been honored with an official "Star Wars" action figure, DePriest said, but not the first time his likeness has been used. Hasbro once issued a figure that looked like Lucas called George Sacul.

"That was very subtle," DePriest said. "This time we really wanted to pay tribute to the man himself."

Lucas thought it was a "fun" idea, said Lucasfilm spokeswoman Lynne Hale.

"He laughed because he never imagined he'd be a Storm Trooper," she said.

The new toy is only available to participants in Hasbro's "Ultimate Galactic Hunt." Fans must show proof of purchase of five vintage "Star Wars" action figures to get the George Lucas Storm Trooper figurine.

From StarWars.com

The Star Wars trilogy comes out for a limited time as individual movie DVDs on September 12th -- complete with the unaltered original films as bonus material -- and will be available for pre-order starting this week. This is a chance for longtime fans to re-experience the movies as they originally played during their first theatrical releases, and an opportunity for new fans to see a bit of movie history.

Each movie comes as a two-disc set -- one disc is the 2004 remastered version of the film, while the second disc is a version that captures its original theatrical presentation.

Done in the photo-montage style of previous DVD release, each movie mimics a poster design from the original theatrical campaign.

It would have been cooler to have the 1997 remastered versions instead of the 2004, then the completists would DEFINITELY be happy, since all 3 versions would be available on DVD.

I thought the original art was what they put actually on the DVDs.

I used to be good at Star Wars before they made 8 million books and 30,000 video games.

Screwed again!

*********************************************

'Star Wars' Fans Upset about DVD Plans for Original Trilogy

Despite earlier reports that Lucasfilm would be re-releasing the original unedited theatrical versions of the first three Star Wars movies on DVD, it now turns out that they will be copied from the laserdiscs of the films released in the mid'90s, formatted for the conventional TV screen and not wide-screen "letterbox" versions. The revelation has provoked anger among Star Wars fans, expressed on such Internet sites as www.thedigitalbits.com, and www.hometheaterforum.com. VideoBusiness.com quoted Lucasfilm spokesman John Singh as saying, "We hoped that by releasing the original movies as a bonus disc, it would be a way to give the fans something that is fun. We certainly didn't want to be become a source of frustration for fans."

They are not widescreen.

:biglaugh:

Glad that I am not an avid Star Wars fan, and that I can live the "Original Trilogy" that was released.

Not true, they will be widescreen, just not ANAMORPHIC widescreen, aka, if you have a widescreen television, the picture will be stretched.

Good point. That being said, I would rather never watch the movies again than watch them stretched.

I actually have the laserdiscs that they are pulling the transfers from, and I'll never get rid of them. The picture might not be great, but the discs are actually very good--and back then, they were spectacular.
