Alcohol. Take it out of the games and it will be less of an issue. That's what they will end up doing.

And CFS I totally get what you mean about it not being wise to mouth off. I agree. If you just go to the game and keep your mouth shut you probably wont get into these issues. I just cant handle the sight of these guys kicking the man while he is defenseless on the ground. At some point doesn't your humanity kick in and you think hey, maybe this has gone far enough? Just saying I dont disagree with you, I just dont think there is any excusing what these people do on a regular basis.

Then again, a huge portion of the Niners fan base goes to the game LOOKING for a fight. I would never, ever attend a sporting event in San Francisco, Oakland or Philly as an opposing fan.

The crazy thing is one would assume many 49er fans are also Giants fans and it's not that long ago that Giant fan Brian Stow nearly lost his life getting jumped by Dodger fans after a game. That story got so much attention here it just kills me that local fans would do the same thing to someone else.

1.) This is the NFL... never see this crap at college games.

2.) This is how incredibly dysfunctional, societal mishaps take out their frustrations and anger...

3.) I have no doubt that, like in 99.9% of all other similar incidents, alcohol is involved...

Seen it happen at multiple University of Texas games.

Yep. Went down there with a buddy awhile back and my buddy was in the restroom at the urinal with an ASU hat on and a dude behind him ripped his hat off and threw it on the ground and said "you can't wear that here!". Really? What's the point of something like that?

There are similarities between the morons who start fights in Tucson, the idiot 49ers fans who start fights, the idiot Raiders fans who start fights, the idiot Dodgers fans who beat up Brian Stow. It's really easy to connect the dots. This type used to be confined mostly to Raiders fandom, but has spread out. I don't lump Philly in there because their fans are ******* from every walk of life, because machismo rules on the east coast, especially Philly.

Those Tucson bad seeds (or as TJ can probably attest) were referred to as T-Locs and would show up at parties around campus after the bars closed and start fights. A few tried to get into my house once, but unfortunately for the guy who tried to get tough, my buddy who was working the door was a second degree blackbelt, and that particular loser ended up with his face split open on my driveway and he and his buddies decided they didn't want to screw with a bunch of white guys who weren't afraid of them.

Won't the players protest?

Oh wait you meant the fans :D

It would be interesting if they did something like that. The 49ers have a rule at the games now from what I've read that says when the in stadium "drunk tanks" are full, they cut off all sales of alcohol. Last year that was regularly happening in the first quarter of games because everyone is drunk from tailgating and the fights start before the games.

They believed a good part of the problem last year is it was so hard to get into games due to first year hiccups, that fans were sitting in the parking lot getting hammered. This year they've apparently improved that quite a bit.

I know someone that rejected a job at the stadium specifically because he talked to people who worked there and quit because they didn't want to deal with all the drunk fans and the hostility that goes with it.

I guess I have been fortunate....I have been to many Cardinal road games...and never had an issue. Yea, you get the usual "Cardinals Suck"....but at that time it was true...LOL . Always wore Cards gear.

I got spit on and cussed at down at a football game in Tucson. I will never go back there for a game a again. I have talked to many ASU fans who have had similar experiences in Tucson. It is worse than it is for ua fans to come up to Tempe.

How can you compare one of the most bitter rivalries to a 9er - Vikes game??

Not a chance. Not only would they lose revenue from sales but it would end up costing them sponsorship dollars as well.

The Cardinals actually do things right with the 4 hours limit on tailgating, even though it annoys me. The Bills start tailgating the night before, which blows my gourd.

I will admit that I probably consume far too much booze between tailgating and the game, but I have never been in a fight. The closest I have come was against the Seahawks when Skelton got hurt and some Hags fan and his pig of a girlfriend cheered his injury. I told him off, he walked over and got in my face and I waited for him to throw the first punch so I could push him backwards over the chairs in the row below. He didn't do anything, SAFE basically asked us if we could stay without bothering each other and we agreed and said our apologies and went back to our seats. An older woman a few seats down told me I was an angel.

I've been to two away games in my life. 2010 San Diego, 2013 New Orleans. In both instances, the opposing fans were pretty cool. In San Diego, we had one woman heckling us since we were getting blown out, but she wanted pictures with us after the game so it was all in good fun.

This kinda stuff is ridiculous. I heard the vikings fan kinda brought it on himself by basically challenging a group of 9er fans (from what I read on Deadspin), but kicking someone in the head when they are on the ground is just sick and wrong. You could kill someone.

FWIW, I'm not naive to suggest this doesn't happen at college games... of course it does. I will say however, that I got to the majority of ASU home games and I have never once witnessed anything close to this.
I've been to several UofA games and again, have never seen anything close to this. And I've been to games at Boston College, Michigan, Notre Dame, Penn State, USC, UCLA, University of Florida, University of Tennessee and several others... and have while I have seen some minor pushing and shoving (at a USC game it was actually a bunch of girls), I have never seen anything close to the level of inhumanity as this, as well as several other similar incidents I've seen at many other NFL stadiums - including UoP!

If anyone believe this isn't a bigger issue at NFL games versus college, I'd love to also talk to you about some awesome oceanfront property you can gave in Missouri! ;)

Yep. I used to go to Niners games as a kid back in the 80s and it was a very tame place to visit. I recently went to a game a few years ago and the demographic has changed dramatically as has the experience. Haven't been to the new stadium yet but it's obvious that many of those idiots are still there.

Yeah they updated the article with more comments from the guy who shot the video. He's basically countering what's been reported on all the local news channels.

Here's what he said now. He admitted to the media he's a 49er fan and if you read the way he words it he seems to be implying what happened was somehow justified.

"I’m seeing a lot of comments talking bad about the 49er fans without actually knowing what happened, so....

Here’s the full story:

The Viking fan in the video and a 49er fan NOT in the video were talking smack to each other, getting into each others faces. A lot of fans from both sides were telling both people to stop and just walk to their cars. The 49er fan then walked away from the situation and that’s when the Viking fan may have got a little cocky. The Viking fan turned around and addressed everyone behind him (mostly 49er fans). He said “ what’s up, any of you ****ers want some?!” At that point everyone went silent for 2 seconds then as the Viking fan was turning around to walk away, the 49er fan in the black (at the beginning of the video who threw the first punch) tackled him to the ground. That’s where the video starts."

Now if you do the math that means the guy who started the fight was the 49er fan in the black, by tackling a guy who was walking away from him, which presumably means had his back turned.

To me that does NOT say the Viking fan did nothing wrong he clearly shot his mouth off, but if he turned to walk away and got jumped from behind and then ganged up on, I have a hard time seeing that somehow shows people talking bad about the 49er fans were incorrect.

The media is asking anybody who saw the fight to contact the Santa Clara police which suggests to me they're still trying to identify the 49er fans who clearly assaulted the guy, and they're hoping people will give them information that's a bit more helpful than the guy in the Jerry Rice jersey.

If his account is true, if you're going to challenge a group of people like that then you better be prepared for the consequences. Right or wrong, moral or immoral, someones going to take up up on the challenge.

However, I'm sure we've seen some fights that we were biased against the opposing teams fan when a Cardinals fan absolutely started it.

I've seen USC fans drop those big containers of mustard and mayo from the top of the Coliseum. Aiming for the heads of the people below. First time I saw it was in the 70's.

The entitlement mentality of the USC cult. Their fans do REALLY idiotic stuff.... because they can.

Yep. Truth is he easily could've avoided getting beat up but was likely drunk and acting stupid,

I went to the Cards/Broncos game last year and had no problems. Again, I am not one to talk crap or anything so that could help. Everyone there was laid back and nice. Maybe its because they legalized marijuana?? :p

Skewed through the eyes of a Sun Devil.

There are a number of incidents that have happened at SDS against Arizona fans, including aggression, spitting, dumping beer, etc. I won't attend the rivalry game in Tempe.

To argue that it's sunshine and roses for us in your stadium is pure bias.

I believe you 100% that it happens at SDS. College kids getting wasted and then finding any excuse to fight with the in state rival. I was referring to an incident we ran into down there. As a former student athlete at ASU, I don't have hatred towards UA as many ASU fans do. I grew up liking both and honestly liked UA more when I was younger.

Those 49er fans should have been beating on Mike Zimmer and Norv Turner , and some Viking fans should have jumped right in and helped the 49er fans . The Coaching staff is supposed to get a team ready to open the season , those Vikings looked like they were at the first day of training camp !!!!

Last time the Cards played in Chicago, I was there and thought they had the best fan base of any visiting stadium I have been to. Of course, I've really never had any issues any place but the fans in Chicago were very friendly.

yes and no. Even the 49er fan admitted the guy issued the challenge, nobody said anything, the guy started to walk away, and got tackled. If he was walking away, he got tackled from behind.

yes it's dumb for one guy to challenge a bunch of people but from that account the guy who started it jumped him from behind.
