I have to agree with Rugby..... since I have moved to Baron Rouge I have heard the word ****** more times than ever in my life....around here it is used way more frequently than "Please"..."Thank You"...or "Good Morning"

The fellas I work with are saying ****** all day long..as the only white man there it made me a bit uncomfortable at times because you tend to pick up the lingo you are exposed to..... so I adopted "Ninjas"

"Yo, my Ninjas,....whassup?".....it works...but you know what? it is just a substitution and some thin skinned chumps will get offended by that too sooner or later.

Too many people in America these days spend their time trying to find ways to be offended, things to be offended over.... America needs to get the hell over itself and learn that their "feelings" are their own damn problem and nobody else gives a ****.... the truth is...I am a 300 pound tattooed white guy and I say Ninja every day, say ****** sometimes too...so what?? I don't hate anybody....how many times does it take a horse to tell you its a horse before you refer to it as a horse? why keep calling it a camel?....why get offended in a word that has no meaning other than the intent of the user?

If America took a specific "ethnic group"...and decided to call them....oh,...Cherubs.....you know, cute, chubby little angel babies....nothing hurtful about that right??

until somebody starts using it with hatred and malice...sooner or later the word "Cherub" will be offensive, hurtful,..and declared a racial slur.

lets not ruin the word Cherub for future generations...stop getting butt hurt over words, when it is the intent that carries the meaning!

I remember when gay meant happy, and it was an uncommon name used for male children. Times have changed, change with the times.

Who gives a ****? Really?

Marinate on that...

Put it this way the first time some safety or middle linebacker lays Cooper out over the middle and stands over him staring at him, how many of his teammates are you figuring will come to his defense?

They're probably all going to publicly stand behind him, that's what they're told to do. Privately I bet there are several of them who are convinced they just saw what he actually thinks about them and don't like it.

These were all medical terms. *** meant 'without papers' before it turned into a derogatory term for Italians. Cracker was a term thrown at task masters during slavery(yes, there were black taskmasters). However there are no double standards for those words. The N word, not so much.

I don't understand defending racism by pointing out other racism.

That said: I wonder if we should have separate categories for people who say incredibly stupid things vs people do things to hurt/hold/damage based on racism/prejudice.

The point is, how often is the term "white boy" or similar thrown around the field but no one says anything. Also, I wish people would stop using the term racist out of context. Racism, true racism, is when one race believes it to be genetically or morally superior to another. The Klan and Nation of Islam fall into this category. There is a huge difference between being a bigot or prejudiced and being a racist.

I don't see a reason to distinguish between the terms. What difference does it make?

And interesting that you want the stress context for the word "racist" but not for "the n-word" or other words you seem to be saying should be okay to use despite context.

I suppose it is your right to do so, but don't be surprised if people lose sight of context and reply with the appropriate label.

While the definition that you use is one correct definition another is "racial prejudice or discrimination"...link.

I think a key point, is that prejudice against racial, religious, ethnic group or whatever is not okay, even jokingly, because it continues to permeate it. It takes one person at a time to realize their prejudice (everyone has one), understand it and then do everything possible to eliminate or balance it in their thought process. IMO, the most important thing is to realize when you have a prejudice moment and try to overcome it.

Some of the problem as I see it is labels. It seems everything and everyone has to have a label. For example I am told that all black people should be referred to as African-American. Why? Not all black people came from Africa. If this is the case then why aren't people who came from Poland referred to as Polish-Americans or if they came from China then Chinese-Americans.

I can appreciate being proud of your heritage but if you were born in the USA then shouldn't you just be labeled as American? If you were born here then you didn't migrate from another country. You are a US citizen. Last time I checked that made you an American, period.

He didn't just drop the N bomb, he said with the word "any" when wanting to brawl. There aint no coming back from that, that's a clear statement of who you are. Dropping the N bomb in public in 2013 while being famous is idiotic beyond comprehension. I do hope he gets lit up often and I hope all the races in the NFL's rainbow participate in the insta-karma program, not just the brothers. "Any" says it all, and it's soooo incriminating I don't care what any player in Philly says, that had to sting and they aint forgetting and forgiving, they just logging that dude in their mental files while trying to say all the right things in front of the camera. What an idiot.

Why cares? He's a white player in a black sport, that got caught saying ******.

Isn't that enough for you?

Ummmm................ nope. Maybe he was yelling back at someone who called him a racially derogatory person using a racial slur. Context is all I am looking for.

The NFL is a black sport?????????????????????? That sounds racial.

Checking out at a store:

Cashier: "Can you tell me which associate helped you?"
White Customer: "Uh...that guy."
Cashier: "Which one?"
White Customer: "Um, I don't see him. He's around her somewhere."
Cashier: "Can you describe him to me?"
:bang:

It is ok to say black person, guy whatever. Actually talking to black people about it cleared it up. I also read it in a book written by a black woman.
