So does this mean Detroit will be another team with a load of free cash come Lebron James availability time?

Yes. Wild speculation is that Dumars isnt done dealing and is angling for a Bosh/LeBron lovefest in Summer of '10.

Maybe, check out who all can become UFAs in 09. Kobe Bryant, Carlos Boozer, Allen Iverson, Ron Artest, Richard Hamilton, Jason Kidd, Shawn Marion, Andre Miller, Lamar Odom and Rasheed Wallace.

Which is why I thought the 20M was better than trading for Billups.

Dropping Iverson and Wallace and reloading with Miller and Boozer doesn't sound half bad. They will have a lot of flexibility. Good move for Detroit.

I think it's a great move for Denver. They get a very good defensive player in the back court in Billups, and they get a chance to move JR Smith into the starting line up. Iverson only averages 2pts a game more then Smith, so the Nuggets aren't losing as much offensive fire power as people might think. McDyess is a throw in and pretty much just a waste of salary, the real benifit for Denver is Billups defense.

I think it's a bad more for Detroit, they are breaking up a core of players that has been very successful over recent years. It's not like Iverson can't play defense, he can, but now they have to integrate a new player and a new big ego. I don't see Iverson and Rasheed Wallace getting along too well.

Good move for Denver, but in the end it still doesn't make them as good as the Lakers or Hornets, so it's moot.

oh man, that would be a dream come true. He'd be a perfect backup/spot starter at C.

That would result in my breaking every existing world record for vomiting.

Too bad he didn't just draft Bosh instead of Darko? Or Melo or DWade
etc.

This will help the spacing for melo, having a shooter like billups at the 3pt line means his defender will be far away. JR smith + Billups equals spacing for melo. Melo will also get the ball earlier in the shot clock, and it will still have air in it(Ai wont be there to dribble the air out).

Why? Beyond frustration with him leaving the Suns high and dry, he makes sense for a variety of reasons. He showed great rapport with Amare when he was here and is still a decent defender. I would rather play McD than Boris or Robin.

This was a very interesting trade on both parts.

1. Its freaking week 2 of the NBA season. I am willing to bet we wont see a trade of this magnitude this early in the season for a long time.

2. This move directly goes against the Camby trade for Denver. The Camby trade was to cut salary in order for Denver to duck under the luxury tax this year. At the same time clearing that much salary also allows a team to rebuild, much like dreamcast is talking about. However, now you take Iverson's $20 mil expiring contract and use that to add salary for next year. By moving Camby and letting Iverson expire the Nuggets payroll would be at $45 mil next season before JR Smith's extension and rookie contracts. That would put them $13 mil under the cap, which is a good way to start rebuilding. However, by adding Billups (which is a good move in my opinion) and buying out McDyess, the Nuggets are still going to be over the cap and near the luxury tax for the next 3 seasons (even without using the MLE this summer)

3. Detriot just put themselves in a position to offer two max contracts in the summer of '10. As of right now in '10 the Pistons will still have Prince, Amir Johnson, Jason Maxiell, Rodney Stuckey, and Arron Afflalo under contract with close to $50 mil in cap space.

4. In addition to the cap space in 2 years, the Pistons are still title contenders this year and will have a very solid team next year if they use their cap space on 1 year contracts this summer.

Joe Dumars is one of the better GM's int he NBA and he proves it over and over each year.

Mcdyess has stated that he will only play for Detroit or retire. Denver will buy him out and he will wait the 30 days and resign with Detroit.

AI and Hamilton will start but the future PG for Detroit is Stuckey. Maybe they are thinking of bringing Hamilton off the bench?

AI is a future 20 mil off the books. Short term the Nuggets benifit. Long term Detroit does. IMO

Add Hamilton to the 2010 roster...

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3680959

The Detroit Pistons didn't stop at making over their backcourt Monday.

In addition to acquiring Allen Iverson in a three-for-one trade with the Denver Nuggets, the Pistons agreed to a three-year extension with Richard Hamilton, a team source told ESPN.com's Chad Ford.

The new contract is worth $34 million, with the first two years guaranteed. The third year is only a partial guarantee, the source told Ford.

Earlier Monday, Detroit sent Chauncey Billups, Antonio McDyess and Cheikh Samb to Denver in exchange for Iverson.

"We just felt it was the right time to change our team," Pistons president of basketball operations Joe Dumars told The Associated Press. "Iverson gives us a dimension that we haven't had here and we really think it's going to help us."

That is going to be a great situation for LeBron, Wade, or Bosh. That is a very solid team considering Stuckey and Johnson keep developing.

It looks like a win-win for both sides.
Nene/Martin/Melo/JRSmith/Billups is a solid and balanced starting 5 as long as everybody is healthy. For Pistons, Stukey could start next to AI with Hamilton shifted to SF or playing 6th man. Good moves.

The best thing about this deal is that we won't have to hear Detroit's annoying PA announcer shout "Chauncey B-B-B-B-B-B-Billups" anymore.

I anticipate Denver really embracing this trade. Chauncey is a hometown boy playing high school ball in Denver, and then at the Univ. of Colorado. He's still got a lot of game left in him, and if he can play with Rasheed, he can play with 'Melo.

I don't share Eric's resentment of Dice. I still blame BC for messing up that first attempt re-signing and the poor communication skills by Ainge that had him mad at the team.

The Suns never even tried to re-sign him the second time. Instead they used the same money Detroit offered to go for Q Richardson. Yes, Dice had health issues (as did Camby), but it was a long term mistake.

At this point I doubt the Suns will go for Dice (no money), but if the window is really as short as Eric believes he''d be a great addition and far more effective than Boris and Robin. Porter was Assistant Head Coach for the Pistons last season.

2007-08 8.8 ppg, 48.8% 29.3 minutes, 8.5 rpg.

What I meant, was they traded Andre Miller, Joe Smith and 2 1st round picks

for Billups, McDyess, and Samb.

Lateral move or less overall IMO.

You brought up the salary side of it, and it looks even worse for them IMO.

dre for billups is an upgrade.

salary wise we are actually saving money and getting near the lux tax. impressive considering we are staying competitive, if not improved.

Or picks. I don't understand why anyone gives up a 20M expiring contract. The FA that you could attract is probably bigger than the one you trade for.

unfortunately the nba doesnt work that way. we werent getting 20 mill in cap space. not even close. maybe MLE type money at most. but we already have an MLE and a huge TE to use. letting AI walk for nothing wasnt going to help us. getting billups should.
