A player gets hurt during the drill, dropping their draft status?
They are already a consensus #1 pick, and drill could only hurt them?
There are plenty of reasons why someone would want to skip a combine/drill.
I don't buy it. None of that has changed. All of that was a risk 10 years ago, or 20 years ago. When is the last time anyone did worse than pull a hammy at the combine?
Go back to the 2011 draft. One of the best classes ever. Every single first round pick tested at the combine including Cam Newton, AJ Green, Pat Pete, JJ Watt, Julio Jones etc. Every single player did a full set or near full set of drills.
On a level playing field so that comparisons are fair.
It's about arrogance and player power, not injury risk. If players want to play in the NFL this is their job interview and it should be compulsory to take part in at least 4 drills unless injured. The pro days should be supplemental and where you go for a 2nd chance if you screw up the combine.
It wasn't until the 2019 draft that players started skipping testing. In fact, wouldn't you know it, Kyler was the first player to not test at the combine by choice and get selected in round 1.
Then in 2020 there were 6 and last year the top 3.
It's nothing to do with anything more than "I can so I will". It was fine for 37 years worth of players. This generation can handle it too.
