Question: Why wasn't their name offensive 5 years ago? 10 years ago? 15 years ago? 1 year ago? Why is everyone jumping on the bandwagon now? Because Obama chimed in on it? I'm genuinely curious here.

I personally have always found it offensive. But that is just my opinion. I have never tried to boycott it or make a scene. I just find it offensive and can see why others do too.

Yes it does.

Again, you are trying to compare slurs that are still very much in use to something that has fallen by the wayside. The meaning of words changes all the time.....

Case in point:

Hip hip hooray originates to lets murder some jews.

Now, is everyone really chanting for murder or are they just cheering?
that link rocks, i just spent the last 30 minutes on that website. I almost bought the deeducation book but amazon wants to rip me off

Every few years, there comes an objection to the name. Same with the Indians and Braves in MLB. This is the first time, though, that it has gotten real traction. And I am at a loss to explain why this time was the magic time.

Although I am still not (completely) convinced it's derogatory, I have no problem with the process. These things take time and they often fail once, twice, several times before catching fire.

People have been offended and tried to change it for decades - starting in the 70's.

Because we are maturing as a country. 15 years ago gay marriage was unthinkable. We evolve, get better.

I guess so. This one wasn't like the steady march toward gay marriage that we'd seen over 15 years or so.

This was an issue that would bubble up, then go away...bubble up, the go away. Kind of similar to the debate over the Confederate Flag (offensive vs. historical/tradition?). So the fact that it stuck this time around is interesting.

Honestly, I think it would've gone away again if the team had ignored it. Instead, the owner publicly said he'd never change the name and that solidified the opposition.

THe original question is wrong, people have been complaining about this for ages now.

Again, the prior owner, Jack Kent Cooke, was so aware of the issues with the name he hired an actress to portay an "indian princess" and every few years he'd trot her out when someone complained, she'd say it wasn't offensive, and then go back in her life. Turns out she wasn't Native american, wasn't a princess and was being paid by Cooke to do that.

If nobody was complaining until Obama, why the hell did Cooke do that over 20 years ago?

Just looking at Wikipedia you can see in 1992 this exact debate was raging, that's 21 years ago.

How crazy is it, the owner of the Cleveland Indians, under fire himself because of the mascot, says if he owned the Washington football team he would have changed the name the day he bought the team because it's so obviously offensive. So even a guy who is fighting the same fight Snyder is, believes the R word is offensive.

= FAIL.

As a person of Anglo decent, I have no angst about this stunt. Maybe it is because I've never been called "Whiteskin" as a slur?

Although it wouldn't bother me I'd certainly consider it an insult, there is no context for it to be taken any other way.

I'd be like, "Thanks Captain Obvious. What else you got?" :p

And then I'd get on with my life because I could care less what they call a sports team. I won't begrudge anyone who is offended by team names, but for me, it just doesn't register.

would you be a whitefaces fan?

Hell yeah! It's about time whitey got some recognition in this country!

Kidding, of course.

I would not be a fan because I already have a team (the Cardinals). And I hate any team that benefits from East Coast bias.

But even if the team was called the Whiteskins, I would hate them less than the Cowboys, Niners, and Hawks.

I just watched the movie Miracle again (AWESOME movie) and noticed that a bus had the company name of "Whitefaces". Although I wasn't offended it kinda took me back a step and got me thinking of this thread.

How many of us would be upset if we changed our team name from Cardinals to Redbirds? I don't think it would bother me much at all. Wouldn't stop me from being a fan. Redskin fans that say they would stop rooting for them if the name changed are full of it.

I have the perfect solution, Keep the name Redskins.. Change the logo to an extremely sunburned Ginger?

"A couple of G's, a R and an E, an I and a N;
just six little letters all jumbled together have caused damage that we may never end.

Only a Ginger, can call another ginger, ginger!"

I actually called my red-haired dog a ginger in front of a guy once and he went off on me for using that derogatory term. Apparently he was a day-walker, but his daughter had been teased as a child for being a full-on ginge.
