If they change the name, fine. The name should still be Amerindian oriented. The logo and uniform should stay the same. It is actually an honor for a race that the team from Washington D.C. represents them in a high profile sport. Make it simple, The Washington Warriors or even the Washington Nations (as in all the Amerindian tribes since Washington is our nation's capital)

Washington has already changed the name of one of their sports franchises, so I suspect they'll eventually do it again. After all, look how much safer DC got once the Bullet's went away.

Go Cards!!!

If 90% of the world thought it was appropriate to use the N Word for an NFL team would that make it ok?

it's an insult, the word was adopted by white men to be an insult, theres tons of evidence and research on the subject. The dispute is because it appears the early origins were actually Native Americans using it to differentiate different tribes but like many words, it got "taken" over the years and became an insult.

Well put. Another factor is that Snyder is almost universally hated - even by Washington fans. I don't see many of the other owners supporting him.

They should change it from:

Washington Redskins

to

Washington Red Skins.

Because in today's world, 10% of the population can tell the other 90% what they are going to do and how they will act. Majority rules no longer apply.

Many people migrated to this country because they were fleeing places where the majority refused to protect the minority with equal rights. While our system is far from perfect, we can point to many things where we did support the minority over the majority because it was the right thing to do. It's a shame if we forget that part of our history.

Of course, this isn't a legal issue, it's a matter of perception and social discourse. Personally, I think it's only a matter of time before the name is changed. All opinion shifts on the issue are going to be in the direction of those who think the name is a racial slur. I think it will take a long time, and maybe Snyder won't be owner anymore when it happens.

No political commentary! :lame:

haha

Yeah, no red vs blue or anything though :)

It is the location of our nations leaders, if you are going to change it naming it something to the affect would work.

Sounds like a whole lot of indians aren't offended to me. Good for you Dan Snyder and your stand!

And there are polls that say the opposite, Snyder is just picking polls that suit his position. For example there was a poll where non Native Americans were asked and over 90% said not offensive, then they were asked if they would use the term in public conversation with Native Americans around, and over 80% said no. Why? Because they know damn well many people do find it offensive.

Not that long ago Snyder got a letter signed by 10 members of Congress and the 31 principal owners of the other NFL teams telling him they believed he should change the name because it's offensive, the idea that he genuinely believes it's not offensive is silly IMO. He knows it is, he just doesn't want to be pushed into changing it.

I think they should call them the Foreskins.

Much ado about nothing. The name was NOT meant to disparage a race. Redskins was not considered a racial slur back when this team picked a name. The team is a symbol of strong, competitive, rugged individuals. How can anyone find that offensive?

The problem is that we have become so PC oriented, even a small group can create a stir because our news media would rather sensationalize than report actual news. When I was working on the Navaho reservation a few years back, the Redskins was one of the more prominent teamswear. Apparently they didn't have a problem with it.

Take that a big step forward in the name of personal hygiene. Wash Your Foreskins. Yeah, everyone's happy...

Wow I would love to see more about that letter. I was only able to find info on the May letter was signed by 10 congresspersons and sent to the 31 other owners, it was not signed by any of them. Please provide a link that shows any other NFL owner coming out in public support of the name change, I wasn’t able to find anything like this on the net. I havnt seen anything offical other then the Goddell coming out in support of Snyder.

Goodell said he believes the Redskins are mindful and respectful of opposing views on the issue.
“I am confident that the Redskins are listening,” Goodell said. “I’m confident that they’re sensitive to their fans, to the views of people that are not only their fans but are not their fans. So I’m very confident they are listening.”
Goodell also said of fans who do not believe the team’s name should be changed: “Fans feel strongly about the name. They feel passionate about it. They think it represents positives and pride and tradition. And there are different views out there. So all of us have to be respectful enough to understand that. We all want to do things to honor people and not to do anything in a negative way.”

Given Snyders background MadMen would be a great new name for the team.

But this is just more nonsense from the super sensitive ultra liberals in Northern California. They'll be all over Atlanta and Cleveland baseball teams next. Of course Cleveland could claim they are just honoring one of the great countries of the world.

I would add, Snyder's stance on this is hilarious and incredibly self serving considering just 2 years ago he filed a 2 million dollar lawsuit against a Washington columnist for defamation because the guy wrote an article detailing what a horrible NFL owner Snyder has been.

He also included a pic of Snyder that had a goatee and devil horns drawn in, which Snyder claimed was "anti semitic" and he sued him.

Since when is a goatee and devil horns anti semitic? Anybody want to bet if Americans were shown that picture what % of them would say it was anti Semitic?

So when it suits Daniel Snyder he's concerned about this stuff, when it doesn't suit him he thinks it's not even worth debating.

I doubt it, though the Cleveland Indians mascot seems rather questionable.

part of the issue that always gets glossed over is the franchise has a very shady history with respect to being honest about the actual genesis of the name. They claim that the original coach back in 1933 "Lone Star Dietz" was a Native American as were 3 or 4 of the players. They did in fact have NA players, there's never been any proof the coach was Native American, in fact it's been disputed for decades now and the franchise has repeatedly declined to produce any proof it's true. He said he was but he never offered any proof and researchers have said there's absolutely no evidence to support his claim and lots to dispute it.

Then we have the whole princess story I mentioned earlier with Cooke hiring an actress. There's a very clear history of deception by them trying to explain away the name.

The thing is, there's more than meets the eye with this case. If the Redskins cave and change their name, it could open up a can of worms and send things down a very steep slippery slope. Any idiot will be able to sue a team in any sport claiming that the team name is offensive.*

*-For the record, I'm not calling this group fighting the Deadskins idiots. Attention seeking ******, yes. Idiots, no.
