Funny, I meant something totally different. Out here the confederate flag seems to notate rebellion more than racism. 1

13 colonies were the original intent and the 13 colonies wanted slavery, yes. Thats why the racists picked it up. but my point was about it being considered a rebel flag out here vs a racist flag.

Gotcha.

I agree. The name isn't racist in itself, but the logo is pushing it.

I mentioned this years ago when the topic came up, one of my rival highschools growing up was the Fremont Indians. They eventually changed the name to the Firebirds over controversy about the name.

One year the Fremont Firebirds had a big hubbub about graduation because a native american student told them he(or she I don't remember now) was going to wear feathers on the graduation cap to celebrate their heritage. The principal refused to let the person do so, if they did, they were going to be pulled from the ceremony and there were threats they would not graduate.

It got to be hilarious a local group started airing videos from previous Fremont graduations showing all the students with bandannas, giant sunglasses etc, all completely ok with the school apparently. But one Native american decides they want to honor their heritage and they're a bad person because they're trying to be different and that's bad.

IIRC they eventually let the kid do it but only because they were so publicly ridiculed for their stance.

I still go back to the whole Snyder thing, he sued someone because he thought a picture and article they printed was anti semitic, so you start an NFL franchise called the NY Jews and put that picture on the helmet and Dan Snyder will sue you for defamation, but he doesn't personally find the logo and name of HIS team to be offensive so he refuses to even consider changing it.

Ya, sorry, it was a mistake. Nevermind.

If not he can go Jack Kent Cooke and hire an actress to portray one.

It's not offensive, I'm so confident of that I'm using a 10 year old poll that talked to 768 people to prove my point.

I'm sure I can find more than 768 people who believe something is not offensive that Snyder personally would find incredibly offensive. But that would be different because now it would be offensive to HIM.

How does Foreskins sound? You don't even have to specify if they are attached or not, so you can side-step that whole Judeo-Christian thing...

Snyder should make his case about the name and send this writeup along with a ballot to each known tribe in the US and let them vote on it. I have no problem with the name and from my perspective it seems to show respect to Native Americans but maybe they see it otherwise. If they find it offensive the right thing to do is change it.

I'm sure some of you can remember eating at these restaurants:

Background for younger people:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sambo_(racial_term)

Loved eating there as a kid and my wife and I still eat there every chance we can. Great food/service and a family owned business. Origin of the name of the restaurant actually came from a mixing of the owner's names. They later borrowed characters from the book for promotional purposes. Just another example of the PC police ruining a good thing, IMHO.

:yeahthat:

I realize that what was considered good marketing 100 years ago may not be effective now. What I don't get is how a business owner would pick a name for his team that was considered to be negative.

If MLB decides to add another team to balance the conferences would the new owner pick the name Slimeballs, Wimps or Losers? I hardly think so and this is why I can't believe the Redskins was meant as something negative.

Why is one considered offensive and the other is not?
