Edges for most evaluators can either be OLBs or DEs. I’ve covered the more traditional DEs, but understand OLBs are often moved up to the line in various formations. Some put their hand on the ground, others don’t. The advantage an off the line OLB has is they have no one in their face. They can pick a gap and hit the line with speed & momentum. Establishing contain (guarding against the run)can be either the OLB’s responsibility or the DE’s. Most often the OLB. If the defense is blitzing, anything goes. The OLB needs to show discipline and not blindly simply chase the QB. Often times an OLB has pass coverage responsibility, especially when the defense is playing zone. The more versatile and athletic a player is, the better OLB they usually make.

Okwara is a non-factor. Let him go. Collins’ money says he stays, but hopefully as a backup. Xavier Thomas has flashed occasionally as a pass rusher. He needs to learn to finish. He appears to have the needed burst to seal the deal, but his balance has been an issue. He’s worth continuing to develop. Baron Browning is one of the best athletes in the league. He’s fast and agile. He’s also strong enough to set the edge when he stays focused. He missed a sack earlier this season when he went for the ball rather than the QB. He needs to remember his mission. Re-sign him if the price is reasonable and target continued growth.

The Cards’ top 3 OLB rushers are likely found on Injured Reserve. Jesse Luketa must be one of those players who performs worse in practice than in a game. He’s showed the ability to get sacks often enough you’d expect him to be active at least as a situational rusher, but he frequently isn’t. Let the man play. BJ Ojulari is the great unknown rusher. I’ve always been taught that the most critical ability was availability. Ojulari has lacked that in his career. When he did play last season he flashed a little pass rush promise, but he was far from dominant. Frankly at this point I would not count on him. If he plays that’s a bonus, but you can’t build a pass rush depending on him being healthy. The final injured player is Gardeck. He was thought of more of as a special teams player and a situational performer. This past season he was the team’s best pass rusher. They need to keep him, but he may fall back to a part time player depending on whom the Cards can acquire. I’m drafting an Edge. I’d also trade for one or sign a free agent. The Cards don’t have a lot to trade, but maybe a 2026 draft pick would bring what they need. Ossenfort cannot expect this team to successfully rush the passer when facing playoff teams. The Cards need certain producers.

Sure there’s a chance Robinson develops, Ojulari stays healthy and Gardeck continues to astound. I don’t think you target the playoffs based on wishful thinking. Players will be available to acquire. The Cards need to develop a whatever it takes attitude when it comes to pass rushers. The defensive coaches have been able to make a credible pass rush out of smoke and mirrors. Imagine what they could do with the right personnel.

Totally agree that we should not be accounting for BJ in our future plans. We got burned this year by making that mistake. “Fool me once…”. If he produces- good for us

I would like to see browning back- he showed enough in his brief time here that he can definitely contribute and possibly grow (maybe a little much to say he is one of the best athletes in the league tho lol)

The one thing I respectfully disagree about is Gardeck- short of him coming back at the league minimum - the dude was a fringe starter out of desperation even prior to him tearing his acl.

I’m thinking:
-new free agent/draft pick
-browning
-Collins
-BJ
-Thomas

Luketa gets to fight for a spot vs practice squad

He had the first three sacks of his career this season, in three games, and then disappeared again.

Even with Browning - we have depth players today. Nobody that demands a double team or can get after the QB consistently.

Re-sign him if the price is reasonable and target continued growth.

What is reasonable?

Harry, who would you like to see us sign at edge, DT in free agency.
You mentioned Calais Campbell but I wouldn’t consider him a splash signing.

What would you think of the two guys from the Eagles, Sweat and I think DT Williams?

Sweat benefitted from little Eagles’ rush competition. He started okay this season but fell off a lot at the end of the season. He’s likely the best free agent rusher but he’s not dominant. If the Cards had a successful rusher he might be okay as a complimentary player. Milton Williams is a decent inside rusher. He’s quick and agile. What he’s not is an anchor. He doesn’t fit my idea of the Cards’ needs.

i don't see why people want to pay Browning $6 a year. He had 2 sacks all year. Gardeck had 3 sacks in 5 games. Gardeck has had more production than Browning. We don't have a quality pass rusher on the team. Nobody can be counted on.

Browning is way more athletic and quick than Gardeck. Plus Browning is only 25 years old where Gardeck is almost 31 years old. I would rather move forward with Browning even though I love everything that Gardeck has given the team. I see Browning as a potential 8+ sack guy in the future. Where Gardeck has probably hit his peak.

I think it's probably time to omit Gardeck from the pass rusher conversation. He will be 31 and coming off a major knee injury. He also only generated 5 pressures in 200+ snaps this year. He was a great story here for a while, but it's time to move on from him as a major contributer.

He is a special teams demon and an injury replacement at pass rusher - that's it.

Collins stays obviously. Resign Browning. Everyone else can hit the bricks.

This is probably an assertion that needs some evidence.
Fair enough.

Say one brother does well and the other doesn’t. Getting rid of one could easily bother the other. If one feels they aren’t getting treated well enough, it can sour the other. If one has an issue with a fellow teammate, the other will likely join the dues and fuel dissension.

I've played and coached for over 30 years now. This is a given amongst the coaching community. Same reason that teams with a coach or front office member who has a son in the league almost never ever ever bring said son along. Too many negative positive outcomes. Similarly, when Kliff coached here where we were in need of a solid back up QB multiple times and even a starter when Kyler was hurt. His best friend in the world is Case Keenum who not only knows Kliff’s system but has been successful in it multiple times. How many times did we bring him in for a visit? How often was it rumored that we were interested in trading for him?

Many businesses have similar prohibitions against hiring relatives of employees for the same reason. If you have a problem with one employee who has a relative at the company, it often spills over to the relative. Now you two problems instead of one. As an employer you always have to worry about how the relationship with one employee will effect the relationship with a relative. It's just not worth it often times.

Richard Seymour plays with his brother in Pittsburgh.

I know the PHNX guys aren't popular here but they had a bit about this I basically agreed with. Because we're not certain about Kyler at QB, it's going to be VERY hard for us to trade for a pass rusher. If you believe Parsons, Crosby or Myles Garrett will get traded, and right now all 3 say they don't want a trade, it's highly likely it would take a first round pick in 25 AND 26 to get them. And the Cards can't really trade their 26 first rounder because it's entirely possible they will need it for a QB.

If you're looking at those 3 I'd rate them Parsons, Crosby, Garrett entirely on age, Parsons is 25, Crosby 27, Garrett 29.

Honestly I don't see another scenario where we get a really good pass rusher outside of the draft

Sign quality player in free agency - break the bank for Hassan Reddick on a short deal would be my choice.
Collins as 2 down OLB.
Re-sign Gardeck or Browning to be 3rd down specialist to sub for Collins.
Luketa is RFA, so keep for depth
Xavier Thomas is Depth
BJ Ojulari is a flyer. Could be awesome depth or out for the season again.

The rest depends on the draft.
If a pass-rusher is there - No harm to add elite talent at a premier position.
If not. This is an still upgrade, but a veteran might need to be added - depending on BJ Ojulari.

I am curious what Dimukeje would get in free agency. He gets good pressure and hurries, but no sacks. Underrated IMO and would provide depth.
