It makes you wonder how a team can score double-digits on back-to-back nights and then get shutout the next day. Funny game, baseball is. What's serious is this pennant race. The D-backs return home to hopefully have their way with cellar-dwelling San Diego. The Padres will have the misfortune of seeing both D-back ace starters.

Tuesday - Banks vs. Davis

Before the All-Star Break, Banks lost to the D-backs at Chase Field, giving up three runs in six innings. Since then, has made five starts and in his last one, walked six Brewers and allowed seven runs in just over four innings. His ERA is 6.51 over the games he has pitched since he first visited the desert. Davis has had a ghastly August, losing twice with an ERA of 12.27 for the month. Davis allowed just three runs last week in Denver, but has not lasted past five innings in a game all month.

Wednesday - Peavy vs. Haren

Peavy always gives the D-backs a challenge. He is 9-8 with an excellent ERA of 2.61. In his last visit to Chase Field, he threw seven scoreless innings en route to his sixth win of 2008. Peavy was defeated by Webb at Petco Park back in April. This week, he will go against the D-backs' other ace, Dan Haren. Haren rebounded from a couple of subpar outings by allowing just two runs last week in a game at Coors Field. Against San Diego this season, his record is 2-1 with a 2.14 ERA and 16 strikeouts in 21 innings.

Thursday - Reineke vs Webb

Reineke, not to be confused with that muffler shop, will pitch in his second major league game. His debut was victorious, allowing three runs in five innings against Philadelphia. The young righthander will be pitted against Major League win leader, Brandon Webb. Webb has won his last five starts, compiling an ERA of 1.76 over those games. His last win ended Houston's eight-game winning streak. Webb defeated Jake Peavy and the Pardes at Petco Park back in April.

The D-backs must take advantage of their home-loaded schedule. With Haren and Webb on the mound this week, a series win is expected.

big series here. i like having haren and webb going games 2 and 3.

The davis game worries me, but if he can just hang in there and not give up the big inning, our offense should score off this guy.

Scary. Doug Davis pitching for us, I mean. Also scary. Peavy pitching against us.

We are still in first place. Bring it on. If we can't take two of the three, we could be in trouble.

I think every Davis game is going to scare us. But we just have to hope that Webb and Haren can help us get to the promised land.

We really need to sweep this series the way the dodgers are playing right now, but if we manage to take two out of 3 mainly being the games that haren and webb pitch we should still have the lead. Man this is going to be one tight race to the playoffs going to be fun and nerve racking :)

I have no faith in Lyon as the closer. Cruz needs to get a shot.

Tony Pena saves the Diamondbacks. Lyon needs tobe taken out of the closer role. Give Cruz a shot.

I wonder how long it will take for Melvin to realize that you CAN'T BRING IN LYON DURING A NON-SAVE SITUATION.

I really don't understand why Lyon was in this one, especially with what should be a close pitcher's duel tomorrow night...not a great decision.

With a four-run lead, a pitcher who is your closer should be able to keep it. Lyon hadn't pitched in a while, but coming into the game with a 7-3 lead with three outs left to get should be a safe time to get your closer some work in. Letting him go stale for a week may be a bad idea to begin with.
In his last five appearances at Chase Field, Lyon's ERA is 31.50. For the year, his ERA at home is 7.15 with one blown save, but on the road it's 2.22 with four blown saves. (Insert confused Aflac Duck shaking head like  in the Yogi barber shop commercial.)

Dunn was just waiting to be in front of the home crowd to get his first HR as a D-back, yeah, that's the ticket. All the talk of Dunn being a strikeout machine, well, he has more WALKS than K's since being traded here. You want to see K's, look to the hot corner and Sheriff Strikeout.

Winning the game that Davis started was tremendous. The bats better not go silent for the aces. I will be in the Redheads section. GAS! ;)

If you take a deeper look, most of Lyon's terrible performances occur when he is NOT in a save situation. He's pretty solid, aside from a few games, when it's a save situation.

Odd. But this seems to be the theme with most closers.

First, I don't take into account if he comes in a game with a one-run lead or a five-run lead, he needs to perform. If he can't get the job done, put someone in who can.

Since June 17th, his stats look like this:
21 G, 19 IP, 23 R, 20 ER 9.47 ERA 31 H 6 BB 1.95 WHIP 17 K's 5 HR's

In my opinion, Lyon is a much better pitcher when he is a setup man, not as a closer.

Whew! Tony Pena came through.

Tough matchup tonight. Somehow, some way, we've got to get a few runs off Peavy.

Bring it on.
