Patriots released S Brandon Meriweather.

So much for Meriweather's back-to-back Pro Bowl appearances. Word persisted all preseason that the Pats were unhappy with his play, and the writing was on the wall after he was limited to mop-up duty in the preseason finale. New England apparently made a half-hearted attempt at trading him before deciding to simply cut him loose. Sergio Brown is the most likely candidate to enter the season as the Pats' starting free safety. Meriweather will not last long on the open market.

Adrian will be playing this year and Kerry is healthy. Abdullah, while no Adub, is a serviceable backup in the event Adrian goes down again.

We have bigger focuses at the moment, CB and RB.

No.... because Briggs is a 4-3 linebacker, and in our system would, at best, be playing Washington's role, so we don't need him. And Merriweather is a FS and we have Rhodes.

He's a FS... not SS.

I wouldn't want Meriweather on the team. He's more hype (Miami safety) than anything else. Bad tackler, and just simply not that good. I know we're not in a position to be picky, but we need a SS, not a FS. I would've much rather signed the other safety they let go.
