Apparently we are second highest on offense and dead last on defense

Keim treats our entire defense like Pete Carroll treats his O-Line.

I wonder what it would be if we looked at draft capital spent (limited to starters).

QB 1 first
RB 1 sixth, 1 seventh
TE 1 second, 1 fifth, 1 sixth (Gowan)
WR 1 first, 1 second, 1 third (DJ), 1 fourth,
OL 1 first, 1 third

Total: 3 firsts, 2 seconds, 2 thirds, 1 fourth, 1 fifth, 2 sixths, 1 seventh

CB 1 second, 1 fourth
Edge none (if golden and kennard start - golden’s draft pick doesn’t count as we had to reacquire him as a FA)
IDL 1 third, 1 fourth
LB 2 firsts
S 1 second, 1 fifth

Total: 2 firsts, 2 seconds, 1 third, 2 fourths, 1 fifth

Doesn’t really paint a picture. I guess I would be more insightful to look at position by round over the length of DJ’s (chosen because he’s likely our longest drafted starter at present) career. Really combining draft resources for that span plus current dollars dedicated to every position - to see exactly how “rich” or “poor” we should be at each position would be an interesting undertaking for which I don’t have the patience.

Some of this has to do with his DC. Running a basic zone scheme and a DC who has CBs stick to sides doesn't lend itself to CB spending. ILB who just need to read and react doesn't lead itself to high spending. Vance didn't push DL spending as a HC in Denver except for Derek Wolfe and has taken a similar approach in AZ.

The obvious counterpoint to this is how much draft capital we spent on the defensive side the last 3-4 years. Murphy, Collins, Thompson, Thompson, Wilson, Simmons, Allen, Fotu, Lawrence, Dogbe, Wiggins, Matthews, practically all Edge guys outside Golden. Kennard just signed a cheap deal to stay.

Many more recently drafted players on the defensive side.
