I understand that it is convenient to test the players as they are all there, but they test at the worst possible time. If a player has a history of cramping, wouldn't drinking large amounts of water heading into the biggest event of your life be reasonable? Comparing the consumption of water of these athletes to some pot heads working at a grocery store somewhere is a bit unfair. John Ross cramped up during his record breaking 40. Maybe if he had drank the amount of water he needed, he would've tested positive and his record would now be tainted.

with the amount of water it takes to dilute a piss test...you just really couldn't run effectively for a while....and don't be mistaken, a "diluted" test does not always mean water....many times it is just fragged...some products on the market throw the test results to the four corners of the wind because most jobs wont fire you over a fouled test,...so for example...every substance reads at 100%...which obviously could never be true......the testing company however cannot come out and say "he took something to block the test" because they could be held legally accountable,...so they use a blanket term..."diluted"...for any test that does not report in standard parameters.

Why can't these idiots lay off the weed? I simply don't understand it. Are they so weak minded that they can't put the freaking blunts down and focus on their careers? Is blazing up really that important to you than a million dollar football career? I wish I can sit around and smoke weed all day long but my job prohibits it so guess what? I stay away from it and if I'm somewhere and I smell it, I leave meaning I don't get to see many concerts anymore. Play a few years, make some bank, move to Jamaica, and smoke until you start sprouting leaves but for God's sake, grow the F up.

I'm not questioning what you are saying here isn't correct, but from all the reports I have read, it is because of water intake. I have no idea the amount of water that a professional athlete can consume, but I bet it is way more than I can handle.

I'm no doctor so take the following for what it's worth.

Someone quite close to me binge-drank incredible amounts of water (presumably as a fad diet aid). She eventually developed a condition called hydrocephally (more commonly known as "water on the brain."). She had to have a shunt installed in near the base of her skull to remove the pressure and it took about 12 months for 95% of her stroke-like symptoms to gradually disappear. Maybe there was no causal relationshp between heavy water-intake and her condition, but you'll never convince me.

Water. Seems so harmless. Everything in moderation.

I'm on the fence about Peppers. I originally didn't like him but he has grown on me a bit. I think there are better players at 13 but he brings a lot of versatility. You can't go wrong having athletes like PP, Mathieu, and a guy like Peppers running around your secondary.

It's strange because I don't think he has good ball skills as a DB but is a dynamic player with the ball in his hands. It all depends on how the draft falls but I'd be okay if all the "better" players, like Foster, Howard, etc., are gone.

Right that's why comparing him to HB makes no sense. HB had more INT's in individual games than Peppers did in his college career.

I pointed this out before 3 years ONE INT. I can't find accurate info on fumbles recovered or caused but HB was a turnover waiting to happen at LSU, Peppers was not even close.

Add in this and anybody taking him in the first round better hope they're right

It's been in the news, recently, that people have died trying to chug a gallon of water in a small amount of time. I'm of the opinion that if you're drinking enough water to dilute your sample, you probably would be puking all over the place, trying to run and workout.

While I pretty much agree with you, it's hard to remember that these are still kids basically, and there's a bunch of bad influences around them. You give kids that in a lot of cases came up from unstable living situations, the carte blanche to be celebrities on campus, then potentially rich stars, and it becomes easy for them to look a gift horse in the mouth.

For those of us that won't ever be in the situation, it's easy for us to look and say we'd never give that gift up.

I know of a healthy 26 yo male that lost his life from that. Forced to much water prepping for an endurance event.

Osmosis is unstoppable. All that water is going to diffuse and when it diffuses into the brain, those cells swell up, the brain stem gets compressed, and breathing and heart can stop.

4. Jake Butt, TE, Michigan
5. James Conner. RB, Pittsburgh

All these kids have to do is stay clean until they get their second contract, make sure the roster/signing bonus is huge and then they can dope themselves out of the NFL and live off the bonus money like Washington.

I say again; to dilute a sample, a person is drinking more than a reasonable amount of water.

I know, I know, you're telling me that, and I agree and would do just that. But as I sometimes point out in these threads, when I was hanging out with NFL players, the pressure to do this kind of stuff in the moment, in the time of your life, is just too enticing and exciting. I've seen these guys feel pretty much invincible, because in so many cases, they are. It's just tougher as a kid when you're not thinking clearly or weren't raised in the right environment.

there was a case about 10 yeras ago of a radio station contest in Sacramento where you had to "Pee to win a Wii" and a contestant died because she drank too much water trying to increase her pee volume.

A failed test at the combine means habitual drug use. Buyer beware.

It's not a guarantee but I say this every year, these guys know for ages what the schedule for the combine is, when they get tested etc. If they can't stay clean for a few weeks around that schedule it makes you wonder.

I had the details slightly wrong I guess they had to drink a ton of water and the winner was the one who could hold it the longest. She finished 2nd, then ran to the bathroom and threw up, and later died.

The family won 16 million in a lawsuit, the radio station fired 10 people. What made it especially bad was they were aware it was dangerous, not only did one of the hosts say on air it was dangerous, but a caller who claimed to be a nurse IIRC, told them how dangerous it was, said someone had died in a fraternity hazing incident just 2 years earlier doing exactly the same thing.

They were talking about this on Mike and Mike this morning. Golic said it's done all the time to gain weight, people who are told they're too small will drink a lot of water to add a few pounds before the weigh in. He said that they tell athletes about the health risks of that every year in advance of the combine. That's one reason this stuff needs to get publicized, it's downright dangerous drinking that much water to try and mask a drug result.

Drinking that much "water" flushes electrolytes , etc. out of the system and probably leads to worse cramping. Another reason to not buy into the water saturation for cramping answer. Claims to never have failed a "pee test", makes me wonder about the pee test system at the U of Harbaugh.

Is the NFL going to be as strict moving forward against pot? Seeing as it's so much more readily available now and culturally shall I say, almost entrenched?

Better question is why the NFL plays police on weed when it is legal in a bunch of states.

Not testing for alcohol either.

Alcohol is legal everywhere. Weed is still illegal on the national level. Big difference. How about acting like an adult and not smoke something that is banned by the league? Why should the league have to kowtow and not the other way around?
