He has injury questions like Beanie.. Don't get the reasoning for signing him based on that.. When we had Beanie..

ACL and microfracture are two totally separate animals that just happen to be in the same general location of the body.

Wow, I came on to the thread to blast the signing, but the 1-year part of the deal has me happy with it. He's a better back, when healthy, than Beanie, and I'm sure he'll cost us less, so I don't get everyone complaining. The biggest thing he has over Beanie is that he doesn't go down when he makes a cut. His biggest negatives are his health, followed by his goofiness, but on a 1-year deal, the risk is minimized. Plus, he's probably going to be very cheap. Given that detail, I'm okay with the signing.

I don't see why you guys always say "Oh, this guy has injury history so it's a bad signing". The reality is, most running backs have some injury history. Even the best like AP, suffer bad injuries because being a running back takes a lot of work on the body. At least Mendenhall's two injuries have fully healed and will not affect him anymore.

Nice move. High ceiling guy signed to a "sample me" contract. If he pans out, great. Re-sign him. If not, let him find employment elsewhere.

Mendenhall was the 2nd best FA rated by NFLN Big Board behind Bush. Beanie I believe was 4th or 5th. Mendenhall has been hurt one year beanie has been hurt every year. Some of you guys just like to bitch. This was a good signing.

I was expecting him to be overpaid for a 3 or 4 year deal. I'm really pleased that he took a one year deal. It means he'll be hungry this year and looking to prove to Keim that he is worth a longer contract.

Beanie has been injured almost the whole time he was a Cardinal. Mendenhall had one injury during the 5 years he has played. There is no comparison.

Great move.

According to FootballOutsiders, Mendenhall was a worse back in 2012 than Beanie Wells: http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/rb

In 2011 he was just slightly better: http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/rb2011

We released Beanie Wells on a one-year deal to sign Beanie Wells. Pretty great work by the front office.

thats interesting

setting aside my belief that Beanie is done, my sense is Mendenhall keeps his feet better through contact than Beanie

maybe the team is trading for the consistency with Mendenhall ( no 40 yard runs, but far, far fewer -2 runs when he slips in the backfield)

Before this past year he missed one game in the previous 3 seasons.

Is no one else excited that we will no longer have to watch Beanie trip after getting 2 yards past the line of scrimmage?

It's not about anything like that.. It's that this isn't an upgrade.. I always thought teams were always suppose to get better.. This offseason we have clearly taken 2 steps back or just traded one thing for the same thing.. Its stupid..

When Beanie puts up a 3 year resume like Mendenhall did in Pitt from 2009-2011 come talk to me. Mendenhall is a better player who has shown more than Beanie. 2 legit 1000 yard seasons and 20 yards short of a 3rd. only 25 yoa.

Actually it is. Are you saying that you have no problem with the fact that Beanie literally tackled himself multiple times per game (that is, when he wasn't hurt or benched for saying he was trying out for the other 31 teams). That is one of the things that makes other backs better than him - the simple matter that they force the defense to tackle them.

For 2012 do those analytic's really work with such a small sample size, probably not.

Not to mention IMO a superior pass pro skill set compared to Wells, who is horrendous IMO.

Also the fact tha Mendenhall has been in Arians offensive system before. So there shouldn't be much learning curve there. Mendenhall can hit the ground running and it gives Arians a guy he is familiar with. Makes total sense.

No question about it, Mendenhall is a better pass blocker than Beanie. And it's not obviously a run when Rashard is in the game.

I like the signing because it's a one-year prove-it deal. All the incentive in the world for Mendenhall to go all out to win a longer deal.

Comparing him to Beanie with regard to physical toughness is a joke. This kid has it, Beanie showed it on rare occasions, but not consistently.

Good signing!

For the record, not a Mendenhall fan. From a football perspective, depending on what they one year costs, it is as good of a move they could have made in FA to replace Wells. Mendenhall can play all 3 downs, has had some productive years, and is familiar with the system. I can't love the move, but it is better than drafting Christine Michael.

Honestly, with our money issues it was probably Mendenhall or Mewelde Moore and Mendenhall has a higher ceiling.

I'm starting to think that as well. I would have preferred Reggie Bush, but that wasn't gonna happen. Mendenhall was our best option IMO. Worst case we reload next year. It takes some of the pressure off of having to draft a running back early. Good signing IMO.
