Arizona Sports has the story also. Originally, we weren't getting Oubre in the deal, it was mostly for Rivers? Now he won't even be on the team? No trading him (if there's even a market)?

I think the trade was more about addition via subtraction. I think they may kick the tires on Oubre, but don't plan on him being a Sun past this year.

It was never about Rivers.

In the original deal we would have gotten Dillon Brooks and also waived Rivers.

Now I prefer Oubre as a prospect I think, but Dillon Brooks is only in the 2nd year of his rookie deal so that we would have had him for cheap next year too.

Oubre is a wild card in terms of how much money he will cost to keep.

Lots of discussion on this but I do think you are right that Rivers was never going to be kept. It's as you stated first about Dillon Brooks and now about Oubre.

Maybe Jones is just trying to help the team by shipping out the crap Ariza and Tyson so Igor can't play them anymore...Ever see the movie Money Ball?

Doubtful. Traded players can not be packaged traded for 60 days following a trade and that takes us past the trade deadline. So the only way we could trade him would be individually. That kills any expiring contract value as the only teams who would be interested in acquiring him alone would be trying to offload a bad contract in return.

Oubre was the key piece of the trade anyway even if he was not the original Suns target. Maybe the Suns have another point guard in mind they might pursue.

OK. Here is my take on this. I believe they wanted Rivers as part of the deal. They wanted Brooks too. In the original deal Washington was supposed to get Ariza and two second round picks for Rivers and Oubre. When things fell apart Washington had to settle for just Ariza. So in the end, the Suns got a better player than they originally thought they would get.

However, Rivers probably informed the Suns that he did not want to play here and would not report, or would make a stink some way or another. The last thing the Suns need is a "when will Rivers report" watch on ESPN, especially with the hearings on the stadium renovation coming. It would play into the dumpster fire narrative that is out there already on this team. It was much easier to just waive him and stay out of the news.

I had hoped that Rivers would have added a bit of firepower at the guard positions. However, if it was going to be a mess getting him here, or if he was going to make an issue in the locker room, its better that he is not here. Circle the wagons, build a family of people who really want to be here. Develop the youngsters. Wins some games.

It is better to be married to a plain girl who really digs you, than a beauty queen who hates your guts.

There is nothing about his game that suggests he'd be a good fit with Koko's offense and there is nothing about his personality that suggests he wouldn't be a huge liability in the locker room here as he was in Washington. But yeah, we've made some horrible decisions so I guess it's possible we were about to make another.

Maybe Jones being a recent former player knows something about the make-up of Rivers and said nah this guy isn't good for this team based on his league wide reputation.

Crawford is probably the only friend Rivers has in the league. So yeah, they know him.

The Rivers thing is inconsequential, other than the Suns flat out just waiving him. That said, he was a lock to not be on the roster come March, so why even show up?

The Suns are paying a lot of money for nothing. They are still paying the following:

Chandler--$11.5m
Rivers--$12m
Harrison--$50k
Arthur--$7.4m
Canaan--$460k
Reed--$1.3m
McDonough--$unknown

Plus they are paying $20 million to Anderson and $4.6 million to Bender to just sit on the bench.

They are paying more for nothing than they are for something.

The one that stings is Chandler, just given away.

The Anderson could be okay-ish given that we have Melton, just have to see what ceiling truly is.

Anderson was also about moving BK's salary too, so its pretty much a wash. We traded Chriss for Melton basically.

I don't know why it stings, supposedly we couldn't find a trade partner for a year and a half. Regardless, he didn't do much for us and even if he's a little more engaged there, he's not exactly tearing it up in LA.

The more dead weight the Suns get rid of the better.

Anderson wanted to make it work with the Suns because he took less money to be here. This makes me respect Anderson even though it is not working out.

I thought taking on Rivers was just to balance out Ariza's $15MM salary. The real interest was in Oubre.

OTOH, why not just keep Rivers if you have to eat his salary anyway. Unless.he was coin to be more locker room poison .

Kokoskov was just asked for his perspective on why Rivers was waived, and he literally couldn't provide a coherent answer. It was like listening to the public defender from My Cousin Vinny.

I keep watching the movie "My Cousin Vinny" over and over again. It is great little film. Marisa Tomei is so good in her role.
