It would make sense. Not saying we should do it.

But McCarron is on record saying he wants a chance to compete, which means he wouldn't be against competing against some QB we draft.

With McCarron we could still draft a QB in round 1 or 2 and let them have at it.

McCarron also won't break the bank. I don't know how much that means, but he's said he wants to play football more then cash in.

Some other guys we try to sign, might not sign if we plan to draft a QB high.

With Cousins, you don't need to draft a QB high, everyone else you basically do.

We need to go after the best we can get, but we're not the best option, and there are some that are right around us as well. Also others have a lot more money. We simply might not be able to get Cousins, and every other veteran but him is a crapshoot long term.

Bradford would be the consensus closest, but I've never been a fan of his, especially not when he's on IR half the time. Bradford makes Palmer look like Lou Gehrig and Cal Ripken Jr.

Sam Kolb is not the answer. A bridge for 8 of 16 games, maybe.

All in all it depends on who is offering what to McCarron. If multiple teams are offering him 15 a year, we'd likely have to be around that.

“It’s just a blessing,” McCarron said, via Jim Owczarski of the Cincinnati Enquirer. “I was going to be blessed either way because you’re still in the league; you’re still being able to play the game for a living. But it’s just awesome just to be free now and to hopefully get that opportunity and be able to compete somewhere. That’s all I’ve ever wanted. I’m just super excited. Just really excited that I get that opportunity now, and I just can’t wait to just showcase what I can do and show a team that I can lead a team and win ball games.”

“We’re going to be open to everything,” McCarron said. “I’m not the one — the people that know me and truly know me, and my family knows — it’s not about the money for me. I just love playing football. Making the money is great, but I just want to play. That’s what I grew up on. That’s what you’re raised on. Like here in the South, you’re raised to love football. It’s not about money. I just want to play. Whoever gives me an opportunity. I’m not going to chase the huge contract and be put in a situation that I might not be 100 percent comfortable with just because it’s a lot more money or whatever. I want to go somewhere where I can win and help the team win and we have a bright future together. I’m just super excited for this next chapter.”

Also the Glennon deal had an out for this year, and the whole deal only had a 3 million dollar signing bonus. It's not as bad as people think.

We have a ton of cap space in 2019, and does anyone really want to sign Bradford for 20 million a year and a good chunk of that is signing bonus? It would make for a big cap hit if we wanted to release him next year or 2020.

Good memory, Chris. I wanted McCarron in the 3rd round of the 2014 draft (we took Kareem Martin). Turns out we could have had him in the 4th round, where we took QB Logan Thomas instead.

I have always liked him. He's smart, plays within himself, throws with accuracy and touch and came up big in big games at Alabama. But, it's 5 years later and while A.J. has played well in his brief outings, how can any team declare him their QBOF and pay him close to $20M a year? If the Cardinals can sign him to a reasonable deal, I am all for it. But, we still have to draft a QB on Day 1 or 2, no matter what.
He'd have to sign a deal similar to Foles in Philly...maybe a little more $$ guaranteed, but still structured to be a 2 year voidable deal...Then both sides can see how it works out.

Is he going to be better than the QB available at #15?[/QUOTE]
No, he sucks.

I'm for this if Cousins just isn't available. Signing McCarron doesn't preclude us from drafting a young guy to be the future.

McCarron's a backup.
All other options may turn out to be too costly and/or too risky.

SK's best option may be to grab a low-ceiling QB with a high floor and use his resources to upgrade other areas of the roster for less money/risk.

Not a sexy range of options, but might be smartest way to go.

One other intriguing thought - least risky/most cost-effective way to add our QBOF might be to trade with a bottom-feeder for (hopefully) a Top 5 pick in 2019.

Well, it worked out for Jimmy Garoppolo, and it looks like it worked out for the Niners as well. Granted, Garoppolo started some games a couple of months later than McCarron, but on the other hand Garoppolo only started two games whereas McCarron started five, including a playoff game.

I’m with you, by the way, in that I have always liked McCarron as well, and I do think it is a big selling point for him that he was a success at Alabama. I mean, that is a huge college and college team with about 100.000 spectators every home game, and they are by far the biggest favorite in the college ranks each and every year. To be the quarterback and, at least in some part, the face of that football program is to be under some major pressure for a young man. Yet, he was still a success.

Like you, there is no way I would pay him as a very good starting quarterback, but I would like to have him on the team.

Bradford or McCarron? That's a bit of a tough question. I think Bradford clearly has the experience advantage and probably the talent advantage as well. But his injury risk is as high as it gets when discussing starting QB's. The unknown of McCarron is his biggest advantage AND disadvantage. Personally, I'd roll the dice on Bradford.

He's an established talent so there isn't any risk in that regard and I think the Cardinals are a playoff team with good QB play. With McCarron, you're basically taking on the same risk as a draft pick but at a higher cost. Maybe he's just as good as Bradford and maybe he stays healthy. That's a lot of maybes for a FA signing to take on. I can understand why Cardinals fans want to get their QBOTF but I don't think guys like Larry want to go through a learning curve and would rather make a last run(or two?).

If I'm the GM, I get Bradford and make a run in 2018. I doubt I could trade up high enough to get ANY QB that I wanted so I wait to see who falls or wait 'til next year where there may not be so much competition for the top QB's/have better draft position.

Make a run for what? Winning the first half of the first game of the year? Bradford is made of glass.

If the choice is McCarron or Bradford, the choice is McCarron.

It has to be for the right price and the Cardinals still draft a QB.

I have a strong feeling that no moves we make at QB will be excitement makers. Just divisive. This board, and I’d imagine the fanbase at large, has wildly different opinions about the direction to go at QB, and until games start being played, you’re still going to have a good chunk of people dissatisfied with the choice.

McCarron looked very good when he took the place of an injured Andy Dalton near the end of the 2015 season and the playoff game against the Steelers. He has nothing since.

Discussion on NFL Today mentioned that the Eagles want 2 #1 picks and 2 #2 picks for Foles.

Point was made that teams trade that much and more to move up in the draft and take a risk on a totally unproven guy---so Foles should get at least that much considering his success under Kelly and also last year in the big games including the SB.

I thought he looked okay at best. Like someone said earlier... Poor man’s Alex Smith.

That offense had a TON of weapons and he led them to an average of like 19 ppg. Saw very little impressive in that run.

That's only 2 #1 picks and 1 #2 pick too much.

I would be very surprised if AJ McCarron was on this team next season.

As long as he is cheap bring him in to compete. Unless we trade for Nick Foles we have to be all in on drafting our QBOTF. I'm hoping for Mayfield.

Point made Eagles. Good luck! Now let's move on to someone else.
