he was hitting .209 in march/april/may and left in the 3 hole the entire time. when lovullo finally moved him down in the order he moved him all the way down to 4th, where he was even worse. i doubt any analytics gave reason for him to be batting that high. he finally turned it around, but you have to wonder how many games were lost due to his offensive black hole in the heart of the order

Oh that's an easy answer. It's "6-8" games. ;)

Yeah I have no idea what information Lovullo or the FO are using regarding Goldschmidt's spot in the order, but hitting him 2nd is the best spot to put him in analytically, especially during his hot streak.

Day game Wednesday. Jay, leading off, reaches first. Peralta, batting cleanup today, with a 2-run HR.

Good way to start the game.

One bad call by the home plate umpire on balls and strikes and Greinke falls apart. And now we are down 4-2.

He is, as we know, a talented pitcher, but with social and emotional problems.

In the top of the 2nd, we saw how his inability to cope bit him (and the D-backs) in the butt.

The days of umpires dictating the outcomes of ballgames needs to come to an end!

The replay has eliminated most of their control in the field. All that's left now is balls and strikes. Grienke threw a prefect pitch for strike 3 that was called a ball. He then showed up the ump by staring him down and shaking his head. In the next at bat the ump called two high strikes balls as retaliation for the disrespect. This is BS.

Baseball has been working hard to modernize the game. Moving to the robo-ump for balls and strikes is the next step. It is the ultimate in stupidity and frustration that every ballgame is now broadcast with the same white box that allows us to monitor accuracy and yet they continue to cling to such an antiquated system.

Additionally my guess is that a computer accurate strike zone will lead to a lot more runs being scored.

Greinke serving up an 89 MPH "fastball" (meatball?) up in the zone to the #8 hitter with 2 outs and no one on, homerun makes it 5-2 Pirates heading to the bottom of the 4th

Three straight games the Pirates have scored 5 or more runs against the Dback starters.

But I believe that consistency will help pitchers as well as batters. Right now it is erratic for both of them. The umpires control the outcome, inning to inning and game to game.

With the advent of the screen showing the TV audience every incorrect call, I wondered at first why MLB would allow it.

Considering the foot dragging of bureaucracies, I now have no doubt that MLB has decided to go to robo-calls.

They're just giving the teams, umpires and public time to get used to it so it, eliminating the surprise.

I hope they have a way of testing the detailed procedures before enacting it in MLB. I would think that each pitch call would show on the scoreboard for the home plate ump, batter and catcher to see. And the umpire would then call it for everyone else. Of course it would be relevant only on pitches taken by the batter.

Right, there would still be a handful of subjective calls for the umps to screw up. I definitely don’t want to wait while umps review whether a player went around or not on a strike call.

Are there any other calls that aren’t reviewable?

I believe that 1B and 3B umpires are doing a good job of determining whether the batter went around on a checked swing from their vantage point. I am still waiting to hear the actual definition of the farthest point a bat is allowed to go on a checked swing.

Other calls? Hit by pitch, where the ball may or may not have brushed the uniform? Foul tip not held by the Catcher?

Also I’m guessing the appeals would still be limited so there are still the calls made after a team has used up their appeals.

My opinion is that a controlled strike zone would give hitters better pitches to hit. I’ve seen games when players start waving at pitches way out of the zone because a certain ump has an expanded strike zone.

Conversely pitchers like Greinke that make a living expanding the strike zone will struggle to make outs. Greg Maddox wouldn’t even be in the HOF if they had robocalls during his time.

How bad does Avila need to get before he gets released?

How many pitchers hit worse than he does?

Got to admit, I figured he strike out. He did hit a hard ball but it was right to the second basement. That is the hardest it ball I have seen him hit recently. I hope(but doubt) it's a start of a turnaround for him.

If Avila's RH power bat (despite a low batting average) comes to life, similar to Goldy's and for the same reason, we'll see.

Even then it will be a question of whether he's a better choice than Murphy, who has shown unexpected power.

If Avila does not improve, then of course he has no place on the team, because he is not a 3rd Catcher.

Murphy seems to be the only catcher with a decent AB. Both Avila and Mathis are struggling!
