Jeff: Good points. I think the three fastest risers in this draft are: DE/OLB Shawne Merriman, DE/OLB DeMarcus Ware and WR Troy Williamson.

What happens is...and this has happened with Houston before...they have their sights on Ware...who was a safe and sure pick at #13 when the draft process started...but suddenly they hear that others like the Cowboys in front of them are showing interest in Ware as well...and they like Ware so much that if they can get the LT they need in Shelton...and move up to draft Ware, they will give up their #47 to do it.

Romeo Crennell needs playmakers on his defense...he is switching to the 3-4. Shawne Merriman is the edge player he needs...and is a better fit at 3-4 OLB than Ware. Merriman is a better pass rusher than Derrick Johnson. I just think Merriman is made to order for the Browns.

The only spot I am a little unsure of is what Tampa Bay will do, if Alex Smith indeed goes #1 to SF...as most of the high profile pundits are now projecting. Is Gruden as equally enamored with Aaron Rodgers? If so, I think he'll take Rodgers at #5, provided he's there. Yet, I can also see Gruden salivating over the prospect of tabbing Cadillac Williams or Cedric Benson with that pick, if BOTH the WRs he likes, Edwards and Mike Williams are off the board...which is likely to be the case. I think Gruden's board probably looks like this:

1. QB Smith

2. WR Edwards

3. WR Williams

4. tie: QB Rodgers, RB Williams, RB Benson

Round 1 - Carlos Rogers

Round 2 - Bryant McFadden (Could end up a poor man's LeRoy Butler at FS)

Round 3a - Marion Barber III

Round 3b - Adrian McPherson (Could be real good; Could be the second coming of McCown...worth the gamble here, imo)

I hope that's how it shakes out but we'll see.

The only spot I am a little unsure of is what Tampa Bay will do,
Me? I'm unsure what ANYONE will do.

Right now it appears that SF and Miami are both bluffing all over the place in an effort to trade down.Cleveland too. Chicago appears to want to stay put. Gruden has put out 5 different conflicting statements. Minnesota (despite statements to the contrary) is now rumored to be putting together a package to trade up to #1 and grab Edwards. If that happened, how bizarre is that?

Assuming for the moment that no trades get done (because trying to scope out trade scenarios is fruitless and gives me a headache) -

1. SF - Talking A Smith, but buzz is that Nolan was getting annoyed that Miami was wielding power by floating Smith in front of likely trading partners as an outgrowth of earlier rumors that SF preferred Rodgers. Nolan wanted to regain trading power, so now he's hyping Smith ("subject to successful negotiations" and right now SF and Smith's agent, Condon are miles apart). Still, if they keep the pick, edge to A. Smith.

2. Buzz is that the only reason Miami was talking about A Smith was to try to getTampa Bay to trade up. If they keep the pick, word is it will be Brown.

3. Cleveland apparently has (in order of preference) (1) Edwards, (2) A Smith, (3) trade the hell out of there. If the scenario holds true, they'll take Edwards

4. Chicago apparently likes Benson a lot more than most people think, and although I think they'd have ranked Edwards higher on their board, he's gone. So I think it will be Benson.

5. Tampa Bay will take the "best available Williams." Mike or Cadillac? Could go either way. I'm thinking Mike.

6. Tennessee - They're pretty quiet. They also ought to be thinking about a RB, so I have them grabbing the Caddie.

7. The word out of Minny is that (contrary to what Tice publicly says) they're trying to trade up with SF or possibly Miami to grab Edwards or M Williams. And, should both be off the board, they will not reach for Williamson but instead go the BPA route. They are looking long and hard at the DE position with Merriman supposedly the hot candidate. (Source of the orginal rumor was that Tice has several Terp alum on his staff and Merriman went to Maryland - sounds pretty skimpy, but makes more sense than anything else I've heard).

8. And there we are, boys & girls - with all three CB's to choose from. I honestly don't know which of the three is highest on the Cardinal draft board.

After that, it is quite possible that if Rogers (CB) isn't taken, he will drop to the middle of the first round. And, as you can already see, Rodgers (the QB) could very well roll down the charts like a crazed bowling ball.

At each step along the way, things could change and send the draft in any one of several directions. It will be this way until Saturday afternoon. Pass the Maalox!!
