Crawled Through 5 FB Fields
The Positives:
* Pacing of Drills---in and out between horns
* Plays getting in and out quickly
* Well organized and orchestrated segments
* Not a lot of wasted time
* All players involved
The Negatives:
* Lack of focus on fundamentals
* 3/4 speed is just the kind of speed that gets players hurt
* Coaches too far removed from players (for example, line coaches should be right there when line returns to the huddle)
* Sloppy and undisciplined execution---too much coming out of stances, abandoning of technique, lack of sustained blocks and play through whistles
* Pass happy offense---plus, play should be whistled if QB gets touched by rusher
Player Notes:
Offense:
QB Phil Sims---what a perfect fade he threw up left sideline to Jaxson Shipley. When I studied his game tape,I was very impressed with how well and accurately he throws to his left, which is usually a struggle for most young QBs.
RB Kerwynn Williams---quickest off the snap and to the hole.
RB Marion Grice---such good size as runner and receiver---very fluid runner.
RB Robert Hughes---nice TD catch from Stanton on FB out pass.
LT & LG Jared Veldheer and Mike Iupati---formidable tandem, they seem to move well in unison.
C A.Q. Shipley---brisk and energetic
G Jonathan Cooper---moving well, but coming out of stance too quickly
G Jon Halapio---got beat by Campbell but recovered well---has a very good base and good feet.
T Rob Crisp---looks very natural, nice setups, solid hand placements
TE Darren Fells---picking up where he left off, looks good.
TE Ifeanyi Momah---good size and speed, but can he block?
TE Gannon Sinclair---thought at first he was Niklas---very good size, moves well.
TE Gerald Christian---good day of practice, stronger than expected for rookie.
WR Larry Fitzgerald---playing smart and productively as always.
WR Michael Floyd---if he could play so dominantly in games the way he plays in practice.
WR John Brown---looks more polished and productive.
WR J.J. Nelson---his speed jumps out at you and he's got decent length.
WR Jaron Brown---catch of the day.
NT Xavier Williams---this kid gets after it---low center of gravity---good push.
DE Calais Campbell---looks quick off the ball.
DE Corey Redding---adds toughness and technique inside.
DE Rodney Gunter---good size and strength.
DE Josh Mauro---not flashy but tough and disciplined.
ILB Edwin Jackson---this kid looks legit as a thumper.
ILB Alani Fua---man what good size and athleticism he brings.
LB Andrae Kirk---made couple of nice plays.
OLB Alex Okafor---best edge player in camp.
OLB LaMarr Woodley---very active off the edge.
OLB Markus Golden---a little antsy, but very aggressive, intense.
OLB Kareen Martin---very active, recovered a fumble.
CB Tyrann Mathieu---all over the field making plays.
S Tony Jefferson---looking solid in coverage.
S Harold Jones-Quartey---super sleeper is around the ball and gets there in a hurry.
I know that the position coaches run through the practice tape with the players---but I think the coaches need to be more involved and in the players' ears in practices such as this one...especially with regard to technique. These players are developing bad habits.
I know I am a little old school, but I would expect the coaches to have the offense break the huddle correctly, as a starter for team discipline. They did it half-arsed yesterday and it matched the quality of their play, which was half-arsed.
Camp cupcake?
Accurate description for what I saw. On the whole I was very disappointed in the lack of coaching, lack of discipline and general lack of toughness. And these guys even knew they were on TV. This practice was soft.
