The Positives:

* Pacing of Drills---in and out between horns
* Plays getting in and out quickly
* Well organized and orchestrated segments
* Not a lot of wasted time
* All players involved

The Negatives:

* Lack of focus on fundamentals
* 3/4 speed is just the kind of speed that gets players hurt
* Coaches too far removed from players (for example, line coaches should be right there when line returns to the huddle)
* Sloppy and undisciplined execution---too much coming out of stances, abandoning of technique, lack of sustained blocks and play through whistles
* Pass happy offense---plus, play should be whistled if QB gets touched by rusher

Player Notes:

Offense:

QB Phil Sims---what a perfect fade he threw up left sideline to Jaxson Shipley. When I studied his game tape,I was very impressed with how well and accurately he throws to his left, which is usually a struggle for most young QBs.

RB Kerwynn Williams---quickest off the snap and to the hole.

RB Marion Grice---such good size as runner and receiver---very fluid runner.

RB Robert Hughes---nice TD catch from Stanton on FB out pass.

LT & LG Jared Veldheer and Mike Iupati---formidable tandem, they seem to move well in unison.

C A.Q. Shipley---brisk and energetic

G Jonathan Cooper---moving well, but coming out of stance too quickly

G Jon Halapio---got beat by Campbell but recovered well---has a very good base and good feet.

T Rob Crisp---looks very natural, nice setups, solid hand placements

TE Darren Fells---picking up where he left off, looks good.

TE Ifeanyi Momah---good size and speed, but can he block?

TE Gannon Sinclair---thought at first he was Niklas---very good size, moves well.

TE Gerald Christian---good day of practice, stronger than expected for rookie.

WR Larry Fitzgerald---playing smart and productively as always.

WR Michael Floyd---if he could play so dominantly in games the way he plays in practice.

WR John Brown---looks more polished and productive.

WR J.J. Nelson---his speed jumps out at you and he's got decent length.

WR Jaron Brown---catch of the day.

NT Xavier Williams---this kid gets after it---low center of gravity---good push.

DE Calais Campbell---looks quick off the ball.

DE Corey Redding---adds toughness and technique inside.

DE Rodney Gunter---good size and strength.

DE Josh Mauro---not flashy but tough and disciplined.

ILB Edwin Jackson---this kid looks legit as a thumper.

ILB Alani Fua---man what good size and athleticism he brings.

LB Andrae Kirk---made couple of nice plays.

OLB Alex Okafor---best edge player in camp.

OLB LaMarr Woodley---very active off the edge.

OLB Markus Golden---a little antsy, but very aggressive, intense.

OLB Kareen Martin---very active, recovered a fumble.

CB Tyrann Mathieu---all over the field making plays.

S Tony Jefferson---looking solid in coverage.

S Harold Jones-Quartey---super sleeper is around the ball and gets there in a hurry.

I know that the position coaches run through the practice tape with the players---but I think the coaches need to be more involved and in the players' ears in practices such as this one...especially with regard to technique. These players are developing bad habits.

I know I am a little old school, but I would expect the coaches to have the offense break the huddle correctly, as a starter for team discipline. They did it half-arsed yesterday and it matched the quality of their play, which was half-arsed.

Camp cupcake?

Accurate description for what I saw. On the whole I was very disappointed in the lack of coaching, lack of discipline and general lack of toughness. And these guys even knew they were on TV. This practice was soft.

Mitch, quite a bit of analysis. It almost seems like you were there on the field at the practices. Where on earth are you getting all of your data???

NFL Network showed the practice for 2 hours. These are impressions of what I saw, for right or for wrong.

I think Gerald Christian is far from Mr. Irrelevant. He reminds me a lot of Delanie Walker, just a taller version.

I agree---he's got better size than I thought. I thought he would be a little faster, though. Maybe he is and was just going 3/4 speed.

Good analysis Mitch, but what part of the 5'10 JJ Nelson makes you think "decent length"?

Unfair analysis from the standpoint that it's the first week in pads. I don't think anyone wants what happened with Dockett repeating right off the bat. I'd say it progressively amps up in the coming 2-3 weeks.

Also some of the 1 on 1's were very competitive and spirited from what I saw.

Nice observations on the players.

Mitch, bad news, good news. First the good news:
1. Fells and Floyd looked great, and I don't remember either dropping a pass.
The bad news. They were being covered by OUR CB's.

2. The two TE;s, #80 and #89, both did a nice job catching the ball. But as you aptly asked, can they block?
3. Three great catches (LT to Nelson, TD) (DS to Floyd, TD) and (Sims to Ja. Brown, catch of the day). And remember, CP wasn't playing.
4. Hate to say this but based on ONE DAY, we might as well cut LT, now. Fortunately he has time to get his act together, but I doubt that he will.
5. I read that Sims is still waiting on new contact lenses, to correct his poor eyesight. Is that so?
6. K. Williams looked VG, and I'll say that he's a lock for the final 53.
7. I taped the entire NFL Network shows on the Cards, and we got a LOT of coverage. I'm either not astute enough, or my eyesight isn't good enough to get a read on the OL and DL, so I appreciate Mitch and others, giving their take on the Big Uglies.

Ten days and we'll be playing the first PS game. Can't wait.

Mitch, one concern about your player run down. You mention ONE CB, the HB, who shows on the roster as a Safety. We can question our ILB's and TE's, but our paper thin depth at CB is my biggest concern.

I think BA toned it down a bit for the national audience. Definitely no back on backer drills or any of the other hard hitting one-on-one drills they did on the weekend. I don't think they wanted to take any chances with a national perception of practices being too brutal. That doesn't speak for lack of discipline or energy though.

Mitch, are you sure that was Sims? There was a nice fade to Shipley on the left sideline that really stood out. At first, I thought it was Sims. But then I rewatched it and saw that it was Harnish. I was actually kind of bummed. I wanted it to be Sims. Were there two nice fades to Shipley on the left sideline?

Mitch-----you see more on one practice session's video recordings than most of the rest of us can do with 2 or 3 of us compiling our information on the same videos. Not only do you see it, but you are then so very gifted when it comes time to explain it to the rest of us. I keep telling you that you are a Cardinals treasure, and this would seem to bear that out.

Carson Palmer argued with Bruce Arians about days off, and lost

“It was something that was set in stone months ago,” Palmer said, via Bob McManaman of the Arizona Republic. “It was something I argued with for probably six weeks and I just gave up because I realized I was getting nowhere with it.”

Palmer said Arians dictated a day off every fourth or fifth day in training camp, something the coach said he’d have done even if his quarterback wasn’t coming off a knee injury. But whatever the reason, Palmer says he feels better than ever.

Couple of things and a question.
1. John Brown looks like he's playing with more confidence. Last PS/TC, I think he was wondering if he belonged in the NFL. JMO.
2. JJ Nelson is a MUCH BETTER receiver than what I expected. Just thought he was a speed guy and maybe a KR. But this guy can catch the ball.

And now the question. Is Larry Fitzgerald still on the team? :)
