My son Justin (Cardsfanmd) & his 3 yr old son, Dominic were sledding earlier this afternoon in Western MD & collided with a tree. Justin did his best to shield Dominic from the blow, but unfortunately, not enough to avoid injury. Justin seems fine, but Dominic broke his leg & is in a cast from the middle of his chest to his ankle. He'll be in a cast for 3-6 weeks, but will make a full recovery. So on this Thanksgiving Day, I am thankful to God that his injuries were not more severe. Please keep them in your prayers, as it's tough on a little guy to be kept in a cast for that long.

As I sat waiting for updates, I had a few neighbors over to watch the game. They were all Eagles fans, but it was a rather subdued crowd. My heart was elsewhere, so I hardly cared that the Cardinals played pathetically. Sometimes we forget how insignificant football really is. Putting everything in its proper perspective, I am going to bed as thankful as is humanly possible.

You are right, you have a lot to be thankful for. I had a college friend who died in a skiing accident hitting a tree.

A prayer is going out to your son and grandson.

Yeah at times like these I always end up focusing on my real life and realizing it's not that bad it's just a game.

My prayers are with your grandson for a speedy recovery.

May God bless the little guy and make living in that cast as easy as possible for him.

While everyone is busy blasting the Cardinals you have reminded us that there are, indeed, more important and serious things in life.

Let not your heart be troubled, God hears prayers.

It's a reminder for all of us that football is only a game and there are a lot more important things in life. I hope he has a fast and smooth recovery.

Thoughts & Prayers lifted...

...And, not making light of this in any way, maybe you can add a lil' Fun- element to it in the days ahead. ie; Have friends & family over for a cast-signing party; Find ways to make them BOTH feel extra loved & special. I'm sure all of us on here have our near-miss stories to tell. My brother, close friends, and I have come close many times. We feel we're all still alive by the Grace of God. But it has given us plenty of stories to share over the years. Again, prayers for your family! Mark :)

That's tough on a little kid. Thankfully their bones usually heal fast. Feel for all three of you.

Semi Update

Just wanted to thank everyone for their thoughts, words and prayers.

Here's a quick update:

Yeah, so this Thanksgiving was the worst day of my life. My Dad's story was pretty accurate. All I have to add is that my son is the toughest person I have ever met. He snapped his femur right in half Joe Theisman-style (the bone didn't break skin but his leg was flopping around sideways) and never shed a tear until the doctors put his IV in at the hospital while he was asleep without telling him first. You could tell he was in a ton of pain but was doing his best not to show it. I was doing the best I could not to break down completely right in front of him, and here he was just taking it all in stride.

We spent Thanksgiving night in the hospital. He woke up the next day to tell Kelly and I that he had good news and bad news. The bad news was that he hit a tree and broke his leg, but the good news was that the doctor fixed it and he had a cast like Ironman.

So now he is in a cast from his nipples down. Monday morning we are off to another hospital where a good friend of my father-in-law's has assembled a team to take a look at Nico and address anything else that they think may be able to be further helped.

It broke my heart and I'm not quite sure I could make it through another scenario like this so tomorrow I will be looking into purchasing bubbles that my children can finish growing up in. :)

More News

Today we went to Kernan Hospital in Baltimore to have my son looked at again. The crew there determined that more work needed to be done, but they they weren't properly equipped there to handle it.

We were then sent to Johns Hopkins, where the man who literally wrote the book on Pediatric Orthapedics saw him and recommended that we have a plate screwed onto the bone to hold it in place until it is healed, at which point the plate will then be removed. The Doc says that Nico will be up and walking around in about a month and we can wait until spring to go back and remove the plates. He also said that that part of the proceedure isn't nearly as invasive as it sounds and will be done outpatient.

Obviously we aren't excited about our baby going under the knife, but we are more than relieved that the prognosis is so good and he should be back to 100% in a short time. Dominic is ecstatic about getting rid of this monstrous cast that lost it's luster after the fist few days. We may not even have to cancel our trip to Disney World for next week!

Anyway, surgery is tomorrow at noon and well be there overnight, so hopefully I'll have a positive update on Wednesday night or Thursday morning. Thanks again.
