Apr. 19—Three area baseball teams opened the 2025 AHSAA state playoffs with series victories on Friday, while another lives to fight another day.

Hartselle, Athens Bible and Lindsay Lane all swept their opening-round series and will advance to the second round next week. West Morgan will play a deciding Game 3 on Saturday after splitting with New Hope, while Elkmont and West Limestone saw their seasons end with series losses.

Hartselle will face Homewood in the second round of the Class 6A playoffs next week. Lindsay Lane will face the winner of the series between Lamar County and Sumiton Christian in the second round of the Class 2A playoffs, and Athens Bible will face South Lamar in the second round of the Class 1A playoffs.



HARTSELLE — Jace Meadows and the Hartselle Tigers showed that the top-ranked team in Class 6A is poised to make a run in the 2025 AHSAA state playoffs on Friday, opening the postseason with a 3-1 win over Southside-Gadsden. The Tigers secured the sweep with an 11-1 win in the finale.

Meadows got the start for the Tigers and went the distance in Game 1, allowing one run on four hits over seven innings. He struck out eight and walked none, throwing 57 of 82 pitches for strikes.

Hartselle took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Cruise Baker. A run-scoring single by Baker and an RBI double by Asher Doepel pushed the Hartselle lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the third. Southside-Gadsden pushed a run across in the top of the fourth inning but could get no closer.

Ty Marsh finished with a pair of hits for Hartselle and Easton Nelms scored twice.

Marsh had three hits, including a double, and two RBIs to lead the Tigers in Game 2. Nelms singled and drove in two runs for Hartselle, while Braden Weathers doubled, singled and drove in a run.

Connor Stiles got the start and pitched four innings for the win, allowing four hits and one walk while striking out four.



Lindsay Lane 9-9, Pleasant Valley 6-6: Lane Jones hit for the cycle, driving in three runs, as Lindsay Lane opened the Class 2A playoffs with a win on Friday.

Cooper Abernathy had a hit and two RBIs for the Lions, while Hudson Jones added two hits and one RBI. Wyatt Wallace pitched 5 2/3 innings for the win, allowing two earned runs on five hits with five strikeouts.

Sam Jackson went 3-for-3 with a triple and three RBIs to lead Lindsay Lane in the second game. Bryson McMullin had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs for the Lions, while Grayson Miller and Lincoln Conn added two hits and one RBI each.

Miller pitched five innings for the win, striking out three.



Athens Bible School 9-7, Ider 3-6: Luke Murrell pitched 4 2/3 dominant innings on Friday, allowing just one hit while striking out 12, as Athens Bible opened the Class 1A state playoffs with a win.

Ethan Barnes pitched the final 2 1/3 innings for the Trojans, striking out four. Ryan Faust had three hits and two RBIs for the Athens Bible, while Colin Rolofson and Jonathan added one hit and two RBIs each.

Jake Banta had three hits, including a double, and two RBIs for Athens Bible in the finale. Faust singled and drove in two runs for the Trojans, while Luke McElyea and Gavin Butler added one RBI each. Murrell had three hits.

Faust pitched six innings for the win, striking out six.



New Hope 4-6, West Morgan 2-9: Koby Suggs doubled, singled and drove in a run as West Morgan dropped the opening game of its Class 4A playoff series on Friday.

Conner Rikard drove in one run for the Rebels, while Levi Borden added two hits, including a triple.

Carter Stephens had two hits, including a triple, and four RBIs for West Morgan in the finale. Tyler Stalls went 3-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs for the Rebels, while Jackson Alexander and Borden added two hits and one RBI each.

Rikard pitched all seven innings to pick up the win for West Morgan, allowing three earned runs on nine hits with five strikeouts.



Deshler 4-13, West Limestone 0-0: Jayden Burford and Jasper Griffin had one hit each as West Limestone opened the Class 4A playoffs with a tough loss on Friday.

Deshler's Price Thornton was dominant on the mound, allowing just two hits and one walk while striking out 12 in a complete-game shutout.

West Limestone's season came to an end with a five-inning loss in the series finale. Preston Moore singled for the Wildcats, who were outhit 14-1 in the loss.



Phil Campbell 5-7, Elkmont 4-4: A furious sixth-inning rally came up just short for Elkmont as the Red Devils opened the Class 3A state playoffs with a close loss on Friday.

Trailing 5-1, Elkmont scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning but couldn't close the gap in dropping the first game of the series.

JP Pendergrass had a hit and two RBIs for Elkmont, while Jacoby Phillips and Layton Schrimsher added one hit and one RBI each.

The Red Devils saw their season come to an end with a loss in the second game. Lincoln Doner homered twice and drove in four runs in the finale.



Softball



West Morgan 4, Central-Florence 1: Chasity Rikard pitched a complete game, striking out seven over five innings of work, and had a double and two RBIs for West Morgan on Friday.

Lanie Witt and Adi Grace Rodgers had one hit and one RBI each for the Rebels.



West Morgan 13, Columbia Central (Tenn.) 1: Rikard doubled and drove in three runs for West Morgan on Friday.

Witt and Payson Terry had one hit and two RBIs each for the Rebels, while Rikard pitched five innings for the win, striking out six.



Lawrence County 10, Colbert Heights 2: Reagan Smith homered and drove in five runs in a big win for Lawrence County on Friday.

AB McKay had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs for the Red Devils, while Alivia Terry added a double and two RBIs. Tilleigh Allen had two hits and one RBI and McKinley McCaghren pitched four innings for the win, striking out nine.



Lawrence County 8, Crockett County (Tenn.) 1: McKay had two hits and two RBIs for Lawrence County on Friday.

Alivia Templeton tripled and drove in two runs for the Red Devils and Smith added a pair of singles and one RBI. Bella Cross pitched five innings for the win, allowing one run on five hits with eight strikeouts.



Athens 5, Wilson 4: Abby Lopez and Paisley Howell had one hit and two RBIs each for Athens on Friday.

Lopez pitched four innings to earn the win, striking out two.



West Limestone 13, Florence 2: Katie Lyn Kyle led West Limestone with two hits and four RBIs against Class 7A Florence on Friday.

Aubrey Bethune had two hits and three RBIs for the Wildcats and Lilly Bethune homered and drove in three runs. Katie Lyn Kyle pitched four innings for the win, striking out seven.



Hartselle 11, Winfield 5: Ryley Cate Wolf homered, tripled and drove in four runs for Hartselle on Friday.

Katie Norgard and Jesi Chittam had two hits and one RBI each for the Tigers, while Kaelin Perdue pitched three innings for the win, striking out three.



Hartselle 8, Lincoln County (Tenn.) 2: Wolf went 2-for-2 with a homer, triple and three RBIs for Hartselle on Friday.

Zoe Hitt had a double and two RBIs for the Tigers and Bailey Lawrence pitched five innings for the win, striking out two.



East Limestone 3, Decatur Heritage 1: Mahaley Lassie and Harley Johnson had a hit and one RBI each for East Limestone on Friday.

Abby Thompson pitched six innings to earn the win for the Indians, allowing one run on two hits with four strikeouts.

Allie Tidwell had two hits and one RBI for Decatur Heritage, while Savannah Sims added a pair of hits.



Elkmont 6, Decatur Heritage 0: MJ Woodfin and Layla Smith had one double and two RBIs each for Elkmont on Friday.

Julia Bradford and Avery Broadway had one hit and one RBI each for the Red Devils and Woodfin pitched six innings for the win, striking out four.

Sims, Tidwell, Sarah Burchell, Bri Tyson, Lexi Germany and Ella Boyles had one hit each for Decatur Heritage.



East Limestone 4, Elkmont 2: Presley McMunn singled, drove in two runs and pitched seven innings to earn the win for East Limestone on Friday.

Miami Wilcox had tripled, double and drove in a run for the Indians, while Kailey Matthews added a double and one RBI.

Ava Guth drove in one run for Elkmont.



Hatton 6, Waterloo 5: Kyli Smith led Hatton with three hits and two RBIs on Friday.

Adley Armstrong added two hits and two RBIs for the Hornets and Montana Headrick pitched five innings for the win.



Dyer County (Tenn.) 9, Hatton 7: Brianna Oliver had three hits, including a double, and one RBI for Hatton on Friday.

Smith singled twice and drove in a run for the Hornets, while Maci Lovelady added a double and two RBIs.



Thompson 6, Austin 3: Arden Breedlove doubled and drove in one run for Austin on Friday.



Austin 5, Chelsea 4: Breedlove homered twice and drove in four runs to lead Austin on Friday.

Grace Lamb had two hits and one RBI for the Black Bears and Callie Lang pitched five innings for the win, striking out three.



Curry 5, Ardmore 0: Makena Hall, AG King and Payton Pennington had one hit each for Ardmore on Friday.



Ardmore 3, Dothan 0: Hall went 3-for-4 with two doubles and one RBI for Ardmore on Friday. Aynslee Malone pitched 3 2/3 innings for the win.



Hardin County (Tenn.) 3, Athens Bible School 1: Ann Tyler Pressnell had two hits and one RBI for Athens Bible on Friday.



Lauderdale County 7, Athens Bible School 0: Addyson Butler had a pair of hits to lead Athens Bible on Friday.



Soccer



West Morgan girls 5, West Limestone 1: Keira Hammonds scored three goals for West Morgan on Friday.

Myra Ramos and Rylee McCulloch had one goal each for the Rebels, while Kathy Ascencio and Sherlyn Dominguez had one assist each.
