There isn't really any basis in the belief that Beal is a plus defender. You can hope that being on a contender will fire him up, but statistically he is a sub par defender.

But he isn't here for his defense.

I think you're overstating his defensive issues. Is he good? Not really. He's pretty close to average, which should be fine. His defensive rating and win shares went down as Washington got worse and I can't blame him for that. He's going to likely be on the worst perimeter player here because Okogie will take #1. Depending on size either Book or KD will take #2, and 3, and he'll get whose left. Nurk will guard opposing bigs.
