QB's on display yesterday

I watched a lot of QB's yesterday and there was definitely a mixed bag of results.

Derek Carr: this guy is playing himself into a top 10 pick and I'll be surprised if he doesn't challenge for the first QB off the board. My Jax scout was at the Fresno game yesterday and, when I ask, he rarely gives me glowing reports on anybody, he did on Carr.

Mariota: Nothing this guy does makes me think NFL QB. I may be totally wrong about him as a pro but I just don't see it. He's a good college QB that fits the Oregon scheme and can hit wide open WR's.

Hundley: I don't know what to think about him. One play he looks great, the next, he's a clown show. He has the potential to be the best of them all but also the potential to be the worst of them all.

Mettenberger: I wanted nothing to do with this guy, but he's has won me over. He's been very good and you can tell Cam Cameron has had a tremendous influence on him. He doesn't even look like the same guy. This year he stand tall in the pocket, reads defenses, and delivers the ball accurately. I'd be very happy with the Cards taking him in round 1 and he fits the Arians mold.

Manziel: Yesterday, we probably got a good a preview of what life in the NFL will look like for Manziel and it's not all that pretty. Btw, anyone else think Manziel looks like a grown up version of that kid Brick on the TV show The Middle?

I only saw highlights on Boyd and Bridgewater. Boyd continues to float the ball to his extremely talented WR's against overmatched competition. Bridgewater was, meh again. He better watch it or Carr may overtake him as the #1 QB.

On the drive where they missed the FG he took a sack in the redzone pushing the kicker back, had plenty of time to throw it away.

Then first play of the last drive he stepped right into a sack. In the first half there was a play where the pocket was perfect and he shuffled right into the only guy who remotely had any pressure on him at all.

For a guy who's a strong runner he's incredibly inept in the pocket

I was thinking the exact same thing. Either he's mistakenly too confident in his ability to escape or he has zero pocket presence.

Hundleys passing stats were inflated by a variety of sub five yard throws that had major YAC. He had one long throw (his first if the night) that he completed. I just don't see an NFL ready QB. He would benefit staying another year.

I also was impressed by Mettenberger yesterday.

A Keim type guy at 6'4" 230. 25-36-358-2TD vs South Carolina. 21TDs to 5INTs this year. 75 yard drive vs Louisville throwing winning TD pass with 23 seconds left.

A redshirt junior but probably won't come out this year.

I think Hundley, Mariota and Manziel would all benefit from another year of college ball. However the NFL's money is too tempting.

I agree, ASU had 8 or 9 sacks and Hundley did not handle the blitz well at all. I thought he could have gotten rid of the ball on at least 3 or more. It appears you get at least one Cam Newton/Randall Cunningham-level run from him a game though! I am thinking Hundley can turn it around, but I probably wouldn't pick him until he demonstrates a little more pocket presence. He definitely needs at least one more year in school.

Russ, You've positively nailed Hundley in my opinion. I would pass on him, not with him.

Just about everyone of these phenoms (guys who have looked extremely talented over 3/4 of a college season) mysteriously had "bad hair days" yesterday.

Suddenly, Manziel's a bum, Mariota sucks, Teddy is just ordinary etc. etc.

At most, yesterday's performances should be considered a red-flag that should cause us to re-examine how these guys gave looked throughout the entire season, but I'd also be careful about throwing all of these guys under the wagon because they didn't look good in just one game.

In fact, you may want to tip your hat at some of the opposing defenses (like Oklahoma State, UCLA, ASU or LSU) that played their asses off and made these QB's all look iffy in the first place.

What it will do is cause me to treat QB like every other position - "by the numbers" rather on past press clippings, with the key issue: "Can we consistently win 10+ games a year with the dude as our QB?" All else is chatter.

Yea I love Bortles. I wouldn't say its unlikely that he comes out this year. I'd be surprised if he didn't honestly. He has a great opportunity to push himself into the first round and if not he'll still be a very high second round pick.

Yep

Meziel has had 2 bad games in his short 2 year career, against the same team & lit up what many consider an "NFL type" defense in Bama. I still believe the kid is pretty damn good. Yesterday I saw at least 8 dropped passes (2 TDs) & he also played in bad weather, so I'm not frying him because of it. He's not scared to fail by taking all the safe throws like many other check down QBs...but it's also can be a curse if done too much.

Some peeps like vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, etc. I still like Meziel's potential to succeed in the NFL over the likes of Hundly, Boyd, Carr & others. Only time will tell.

It's hard to say. The guy was sacked, I think, a record number of times on an expansion team, so his weapons had to be limited. He wasn't good but a lot of it was the situation he was in.

I've seen others get the tar beat out of them over & over and play pretty well. Warner, Rodgers, Favre, Rothlesberger, Romo & Eli come to mind.
