-------------

As you can see, the Heisman Trophy has been sort of a curse for college QBs going pro for the past 21 years. The only QB of note up here is Carson Palmer. With the exception of Bradford and Tebow, who have not been in the league long enough to make a definitive analysis, the award has done little to nothing to bolster these individuals' hopes and dreams of succeeding at the NFL level. Some even slipped all the way down into the 7th round of the draft, which shows that some NFL teams are smart enough to ignore the award and look more into their overall acumen and body of work.

It goes to show that even though you can be the best college QB and seemingly annihilate the competition, there is a better than good chance you wont succeed in the pros. This can be for many reasons. For example, college system that doesnt fit the NFL style, strength of competition or simply not mentally tough enough to succeed at the next level.

As for Cam Newton, you be the judge......

The question becomes; do you avoid Heisman winners because they won the trophy or simply throw out the fact that they won the trophy as proof of ability?

College Awards mean little, Heisman Trophy is worthless as a predicter of NFL success.

Exactly and a derivative of that is that college stats don't mean that much as a predictor of NFL success. Certainly not on the good end. There are countless players that put up great numbers in college and did squat in the pros.

Ty Detmer played 14 seasons. One season he led the Eagles to the playoffs. Surprised he's labeled a bust. Especially when he was drafted in the 9th round...

Man, the New York Athletic Club does a really terrible job scouting pro quarterback prospects. Isn't that what the Heisman is an award for? The best Pro Prospect in the country?

No, it isn't. Which is why Newton's Heisman is irrelevent to his draft status, which is the point of the thread.

Using his heisman trophy as an indicator that he will not succeed does not equate to the heisman being irrelevant.

Here is a surprising stat.

From 1970-1999 only nine QBs won the Heisman. Since then QBs have won 9 of 11.

I thought the point of the thread was to establish that Newton will fail because he won the Heisman, or at least bring that up as another "black mark" against him. I happen to agree with you that is a hogwash argument.

So Andre Ware, Eric Crouch, Matt Leinart, John White et al were all great pro QBs?

The point of this thread is to establish a trend, which is collectively, QBs who've won the Heisman Trophy for the past 21 years have done little to nothing in the NFL. And since your stance is the Heisman is the ultimate indicator for college quarterbacks succeeding in the pros , then surely someone who wins the Heisman should succeed at the next level, right? Eventually?

The point was not for me to state that he would fail and to bestow upon him another "black mark." That's the implication you concluded.

The trend is disconcerting, wouldnt you agree?

There are times when a college player's productivity will translate well to an NFL field. Ricky Williams, Charles Woodson, Carson Palmer, etc. are indications of this.

There are times when a college player's productivity is a factor of the system around him, or the talent surrounding him, or whatever. I think that the UF QBs under Spurrier and the option QBs like Crouch are evidence of this.

I don't think that the Heisman as currently conceived even acknowledges the best individual player in college football. It tends to acknowledge the best player on the best team among the top 5 or 6 conferences in college football. I just don't happen to think that this has much to do with pro success. I don't think it's an indication of anything of value that Eric Crouch didn't become an NFL quarterback--no one really expected him to.

And Newton attended Florida at one point..

Just tying this up in a neat little package.. :D
True, but when was the last time the Cards drafted a player from Auburn and they sucked?

So how many heisman winners drafted in the first round have succeeded? Seems the trend is somewhat different. Who cares is Gino Torretta, Detmer or ward succeeded? Were they all barely drafted anyway?
