For the same money? Mourning, no contest.

P.J. Brown is not a lot better than Outlaw. He is a better scorer and he's a bit stronger, but he's in the same category of player. He certainly isn't a center, and he doesn't address any pressing needs that the Suns have.

Even if Zo isnt or never will be what he once was. The guy was my personal favorite for a long time... If we could ever make him a part of this team and still keep the core of the team intact I would crap my pants with joy!

The injury situation alone forces me to choose PJ Brown. Realistically, of course.

i'd rather just take the risk on mourning (If he had a clause in his contract) as opposed to brown. Even without the clause it would take me awhile to decide.

With all the injury problems we've had as a team, as well as Zo's production in-between injuries, I find it amazing that he is given as much consideration as he is.

15.7ppg 8.4rpg 1.2apg 2.5bpg in 32mpg before he sat out this season

Who is even close to matching that production and is available for the exemption?
Which center who can match that production is available at all?

That's when he was playing for Riley. Playing for Frank there's no guarantee he would even get off the bench.

Please, Scott Williams is getting off of the bench.

We are talking about Alonzo Mourning not Iakovos Tsakalidis.

what kind of clause are you looking for?? I dont think they can have a clause that causes a voided contract due to injury. Even if they did make such a clause, doctors would have to prove that mourning would NEVER be able to play again.

I mean even if there is an agreement where mourning will not collect a check if he fails to play a certain number of games(which would never ever happen) the slaary would still count against both the cap and the tax.

For the sake of realism, I would take PJ Brown

How do you figure he's going to be had just for the exemption? I think that's wishful thinking on your part.

How many teams in the NBA can offer more than the exemption?

How many of those are not absolutely rebuilding cellar dwellars?
How many of those need a starting center?

I am not sure but only the Spurs, Jazz, Clippers and Nuggets have enough capspace I think.

It's not like teams like the Mavs, Knicks, Magic or Blazers don't spend above their limit. There are only a few teams with cap space, but that doesn't rule out sign-and-trades with other teams. There's no guarantee he's going to do the whole outright free agent thing. He may think he owes Miami and Riley a chance to improve themselves instead of just walking away. You never know.

Sign and trade works for the Suns likely even better because they wouldn't have to increase their total salaries.

On the other hand I doubt the Heat really look for a sign and trade because they are one of the teams who actually have a few millions capspace if they let Zo walk.

The question is...is would you do a sign and trade for mourning that included outlaw or possibly a #1 ?

Unless, of course, someone trades them a good young player in return. Wasted says would we do Outlaw and a 1st rounder for him--and I would say no--Riley probably wouldn't want either Outlaw OR a Suns #1. That's just not realistic.

Alonzo Mourning has to accept every sign and trade.

The Heat can't just sign and trade him to someone who makes the best offer.
That narrows the possibility of teams since he will surely want to play for a team that he has somewhat of a chance to make a playoff run.
And he would probably only want to live in a warm climate similiar to Miami to retire.

Conclusion? The Heat won't get much value in a sign and trade.

Further conclusion? They'll let him walk to a smaller salary, rather than help him out by taking on players they don't really want.

Forget about shipping off Outlaw and the #17. Miami would rather have nothing.

There is so much wrong with these statements. What if Memphis offered Pau Gasol for Mourning in a sign and trade? Or if Orlando offered Drew Gooden? You don't think there is any combo of players that Miami would accept? There definitely is, but it certainly ain't Bo Outlaw and a #17 draft pick.

A nice climate sounds nice, but we've heard about how Phoenix is a great place to retire, yet that is a fallacy as well. Warm climate? Yes. But that certainly isn't a prequisite for playing here. We had guys leaving for Denver, for gawd sakes.

Come on. Those are completely unrealistic scenarios. Neither of those teams are going to offer their up and coming frontcourt stars for a has-been Allstar you can't depend on to make it through an entire season.

I wouldn't say a sign and trade is completely out of the question, but it is extremely unlikely. The Heat need the salary-cap space more than anything.

I would rather have P.J. Brown. I'll bet at this point he is better then Alonzo in nearly every aspect of the game. I would love Brown on the Phoenix Suns, but it's highly unlikely. I just don't think the Suns will be willing to give their mid-level exception unless they can somehow shed some salary.

Come on yourself. That wasn't the point and you know it. Yes, Gasol is unrealistic and absurd, but there are any number of possibilities. What about Chicago? LA Clippers? You can never say never.

I'll bet at this point (P.J. Brown) is better then Alonzo in nearly every aspect of the game.

Including the ability to defend Western Conference centers? Brown checks in at only 240 pounds. He's basically the same size as Marcus Camby.

Or how about the ability to score? Mourning averaged 15.7 points per game in his first comeback, and that was a career low (ignoring the abbreviated action he saw in '00-'01, when his condition was first diagnosed). Brown's highest-scoring season was 11.4, and he's been in double figures only three years out of ten in his career.

I think preferring Brown over Mourning because of health and availability issues makes sense. I think preferring Brown because of the belief that he'd be better than a healthy Mourning is borderline absurd.

Do we need a scoring center though? Sure 10 ppg would be great, but can our team chemistry handle another guy who wants to be a main option on offense?

I have been asking that for a long time Jbeecham.

I have said all along that I would prefer to have a defensive, hard working pleyer in the middle. Out of everyone that we have a shot at (for example, not Brad miller) I really like the prospect of PJ Brown. He is a dirt worker, can score if he needs to (much better than outlaw I might add) and seems to be good in the locker room. He is a 10 year vet, knows how to play the game and knows his role. He would work for our small lineups which FJ will most likely continue to use, and Big Jake could come in for the bigger bodies assuming he gets more time next year.

I think that DA had it almost perfect in his chat last week.
