According to 910 in Phoenix. Iavaroni stated that Bell probably has a mild to moderate tear in his calf, and will possibly miss 5-7 days.

I am glad House got his feet wet last night. House and JJ will need to step up.

I just posted something similar to this here: http://www.arizonasportsfans.com/vb/showpost.php?p=1005030&postcount=34

if it's 5-7 days they'll be lucky. Time for someone else (house/Jones) to step up as the team has done all season.

Any word on Howards ankle?

Yeah I dont see him being very effective the rest of the way if he comes back...Someone else will have to step up.

From what I heard Howard was seen leaving the locker room w/o a limp. Down 1-0 you have to think he plays in game 2.

If the Suns win this series w/ 3/5ths of their starting line up injured, it would be incredible.

If Howard can play he will. They'll tape him up.
I wonder how Marion's ankle is because after that dunk to put them up it looked like he came up limping a little. He should be ok though.

What Is a Calf Strain?
A calf strain is caused by a ripping away of part of the gastrocnemius or soleus muscle from the Achilles tendon. It is similar to an Achilles tendon rupture, but it occurs higher up in the back of the leg. A classic sign of a calf strain is similar to that of an Achilles tendon rupture as well. You may think you've just been hit in the leg. Often, there is an audible "pop." and you may turn around to see what has just hit you. There is a sudden pain at the back of the leg, you may have difficulty in contracting the muscle or standing on tiptoe, and there may be pain, swelling or bruising in the calf muscle.

Causes of Calf Strain
This injury is common in running sports that require quick acceleration of changes in direction.

Calf strain is also referred to as "Tennis Leg," because it is so common among tennis players. It usually occurs in people between the ages of 30 - 45, never in children.

Typically, the torn calf muscle will go into spasm, and contract forcefully. The toes will point down; bruises may develop in the foot and ankle due to the downward flow of blood from internal bleeding.

Treatment of Calf Strain
The first thing to do for a strained calf muscle is to gently stretch it. R.I.C.E. (rest, ice, compression, elevation) is essential. Wrap the calf by starting at the toes and working up to the knee.

This compression will help keep the blood from pooling in the foot and ankle. Anti-inflammatories may help reduce pain. Wrap your calf with a 4-inch Ace bandage. It should be tight enough to provide relief but not so tight that it cuts off circulation. Eventually, the muscle will reattach to the tendon; however, it is usually shorter than before the injury.

A visit to a physician and or a physical therapist is essential in order to facilitate healing. A treated calf strain can rehab within 4 to 6 weeks, while left untreated, it may require months, and may develop into a chronic injury. Ultrasound may be prescribed to assist in healing the injured calf.

Typical treatment includes the following areas.
  • Passive Stretching: stretch the area gradually beginning with passive range of motion stretching. Gently pull your foot and toes up with legs straight if possible to stretch the calf muscle. Hold for 10 secs and repeat 5 to 10 times.
  • Active stretching: Pull your foot and toes up (using the muscles in the front of your leg) to stretch the calf muscle. Hold for 10 secs and repeat 5 to 10 times.
  • Progressive strengthening exercises. Hook a band under your toes and press gently for light resistance exercise for the calf muscles. Point your foot down against resistance and then allow it to come up again. Do 10 reps, rest and repeat 5 to 10 times.
  • Proper foot ware
  • Biomechanical evaluation
As with all sports related injuries, a visit to a physician for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan is essential.

Suns always seem to suffer injuries in key playoff runs. Very unlucky.

Mavericks lose Howard early

[SIZE=+1]Sprained ankle in first quarter takes away versatile player

It was not a pleasant sight for the Mavericks.
Josh Howard, the team's third-leading scorer, was walking to his car on crutches.
Howard, a major piece to the offense, played only six minutes in Wednesday night's 121-118 Game 1 loss to the Suns.
Howard, a 6-7 small forward, left with 6:01 to play in the opening quarter with a severely sprained right ankle.

It was the same ankle Howard sprained early this season, when he missed 10 games.
Howard injured the ankle on an awkward landing after a drive to the basket. X-rays on his ankle were negative. An MRI exam is scheduled for today.
When asked about his status for Game 2 on Friday, he said, "I don't know."
Howard said the crutches were more than a precaution.
"It hurts pretty bad," he said.
Howard is an athletic scorer and defender whom the Mavericks need to guard several Suns players.
Tim Thomas, Shawn Marion and Boris Diaw, all versatile players who can score from the outside and drive to the basket, were going to draw Howard's attention Wednesday.
It was Diaw who scored the game-winning basket for the Suns.
Howard, who averaged 16.4 points in the first two playoff series, presents an offensive matchup problem for opponents. He can score outside and take defenders to the basket. He scored six points on 3-of-4 shooting from the field before leaving with the injury.
"Well, it's a big void," coach Avery Johnson said. "He's capable of getting 20 points and 10 rebounds, especially in a game like this. We missed Josh, but it's still no excuse."
Without Howard, Johnson was forced to use Devin Harris more at point guard and give more minutes to a player – Marquis Daniels – in whom he doesn't have a lot of confidence.
Daniels didn't play in the Game 7 victory over the Spurs, but he played 15 minutes Wednesday. He was on the floor in the closing seconds and committed a costly turnover.
Johnson also went with a smaller lineup to start the second half. He started Keith Van Horn, Adrian Griffin and Dirk Nowitzki in the frontcourt. The backcourt included Jason Terry and Harris.
The long-term effect of Howard's potential absence isn't known. But in Game 1, the Mavericks got strong play from Harris and Griffin, who provided tough minutes on the defensive end.
"We miss everybody," forward Jerry Stackhouse said. "With Josh, he would have been out there and given us another body who is an athlete. We had enough. But you talk a lot about what you miss when you lose."

Hopefully Howard is out too, so it will at least be even.

I love Raja's defense, but I'm not worried with this team...we have guys who just step up all the time.

James Jones and Barbosa WILL step up...and House too.

I recken thats what the MRI will reveal to the severity.

Well from what I read on arizona republic today, they say he is def. out for game 2, but will try it out for game 3. The guy is in pretty good shape, and he is dealing with pro training staffs, i would suspect he could be back by Game 4 at the latest. Just my Opinion though.

Maybe 4-6 weeks is "fat guy carrying 80% extra body weight" and 5-7 days, "professional athlete with a heart the size of Raja Bell".

Let's hope it is just 5-7 days, we are going to need Raja for the Pistons...

If it's a week, that might be manageable. The Suns would have him back for Game 5. They'd need only one win out of the next three to get to 2-2, and then anything can happen.

Hmmm maybe Fairy's have no sense of humor...???

Maybe I should have asked if Fairy's have a sense of humor? Then you could have actually provided some content to this thread.
