Minnesota will recieve Harris, draft picks

ESPN.com news services

Just two days after the Vikings' owner-to-be said he didn't want to trade Randy Moss, the team agreed to do just that.

According to a report in the St. Paul Pioneer Press on Wednesday, Minnesota will trade the receiver to the Oakland Raiders for linebacker Napoleon Harris, the seventh overall pick in the upcoming draft and a 2005 late-round pick. According to NFL rules, trades can be worked out but not announced until next month.

"Nothing is official until March 2," Moss' agent, Dante DiTrapano, told the Pioneer Press. "But don't be surprised if Randy is wearing the Silver and Black this upcoming season."

"We've had some discussions with them (the Raiders), but there is nothing to announce," Vikings vice president of football operations Rob Brzezinski told the Pioneer Press.

Once Moss leaves Minnesota, the Vikings' top receiver will be Nate Burleson. Former Steeler Plaxico Burress is the cream of the free-agent crop, but the Vikings could also snare a potential salary-cap casualty such as Isaac Bruce, Muhsin Muhammad or Derrick Mason. The draft also has two promising players -- Michigan's Braylon Edwards and USC's Mike Williams.

"In speaking with Moss, although he has a lot of ties to Minnesota and did not particularly want to be traded, he's very excited with the possibility of playing for Al Davis and being a part of the Raider tradition," DiTrapano told the Pioneer Press. "The Raiders have vowed to use Randy's talents the way they should be used, and that's to throw the ball vertically down the field.

"Randy's desire to win a Super Bowl is enhanced with a move to a team like the Raiders, because the Minnesota Vikings seem to be in a constant rebuilding mode," he said.

The Raiders will take on Moss' $7.25 million base salary for next season, while the Vikings will save nearly $2 million against their cap. Four seasons remain on Moss' eight-year $75 million contract.

Perhaps now that they have a great need for OLB's, they will be more inclined to make a deal for our very own Ray Thompson. I doubt they will be willing to part ways with a draft pick/player this year, but maybe we can get a 2006 draft choice. 3rd rounder or a pick based on how well he plays with them during the 2005 season.

I think this is a good deal for the Vikings. They can replace Moss with Braylon Edwards or Williams if they desired. Not to mention they got Napolean Harris out of the deal. Not bad in my opinion.

Vikings | Moss Traded to Oakland? - from www.KFFL.com
Wed, 23 Feb 2005 13:21:40 -0800

Sean Jensen, of the Pioneer Press, reports Minnesota Vikings WR Randy Moss' agent, Dante DiTrapano, has said the Vikings have agreed to trade Moss to the Oakland Raiders in exchange for the seventh-overall selection in the 2005 NFL Draft, a late-round 2005 draft pick and LB Napoleon Harris. NFL trades cannot become official until March. "Nothing is official until March 2," DiTrapano told the Pioneer Press Wednesday, Feb. 23. "But don't be surprised if Randy Moss is wearing the Silver and Black this upcoming season." The Raiders will assume Moss' $7.25 million base salary for 2005 while the Vikings receive a cap savings of nearly $2 million. Moss has four seasons remaining on his contract.

Moss is not replaceable...certainly not with Braylon Edwards!

Check out how many people are on the Viking forum!

It's a perfect fit for the Raiders and Randy. They have one heck of a recieving core now.

Wow I'd just heard last night on local tv that the Raiders signing of Porter and franchising of Woodson means they've given up on getting Moss.

Wonder how they fit him under their cap?

If they get Jordan look out, Collins is dumb but one thing he can really do is air the ball out, and with Moss and Gabriel going deep and Porter and Curry underneath they're going to be scary good throwing the ball.

I wonder if this means they now trade Woodson, they can't possibly carry his contract with Moss, Porter and sign a RB.

Too bad we couldn't throw them our #1, Ray Thompson, and a late-rounder :(

Ihad the same thought but I do wonder, reports are Moss has a chronic ankle problem he's been playing with the last 2-3 years. I've always figured he'll be one of those guys who retires all of a sudden, so I really wonder how much longer he'll play? I also wonder about a guy with Moss' character issues in a city like Oakland, he's a lot older than Chris Washburn was but I gotta believe it's a lot easier to get in trouble in Oakland than it was in Minneapolis.

Just hope the Raiders don't assign Janikowski to be his "tour guide" when he arrives.

That said, I think Minnesota is now a much weaker team. Even if they get Mike Williams they will find out how much harder it is to run when teams can bring their safeties up with no fear of Moss.

What a huge deal.

The Vikings are going to miss Moss.

He takes two defenders every play he is in the game..........The Vikings have not used him to their advantage the last couple years.

"The announcer" (can not think of his name) (Monday night color man??) said it many times while he was announcing the game of the week, if I had Randy Moss on my team, I would throw at least one long ball every quarter to him just to really open up the game, and most times he would catch it.

Yeah, it's probably the pick that Arizona traded to Oakland for Zellner and Hambrick.

Moss was way to expensive for the Vikings and he really didn't fit in Minn. I think the Vikings did the right thing in trading him. I like what they got in return. Harris is a top young LB and he still hasn't entered his prime. Top that off with a high first round pick this year. Not to mention that the Vikings have efectively lowered their salary by millions. Plus they removed a major headache and embarassment.

Moss will fit in perfectly with Oakland. I don't know how they can fit him under their salary cap but jersey sales alone will make him worth the trade. He definitely is a Raider type player.
