Well the upside is that we will get to see one of the rookies (Gerald Hayes) get substantial playing time, so we can tell if he is a quality player or not...:D

Cards' Thompson suspended for rest of season
By Darren Urban, Tribune

Cardinals linebacker Raynoch Thompson was suspended Tuesday by the NFL for the final four games of the regular season for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.

“There is a large support system here and in the league,” coach Dave McGinnis said. “I just want the best for Raynoch.

“I was sad when I was informed of this this afternoon.”

Thompson, who had just signed a four-year contract extension Oct. 3, had been arrested for a DUI in 2001 and had made inactive by the team for a game in Dallas that season, a virtual one-game suspension.

Thompson, who will forfeit $291,000 of his salary, is tied for the team lead in sacks with three and is second on the team with 90 tackles.

Nothing specific was said yet.

Speculation on this board was that it had to be Steroids because (according to whomever posted it) that's the only violation that gets you an immediate 4-game suspension - less draconian measures are used for other forms of substance abuse.

We'd be well-advised to wait for the "official word."

I still see an irony here - The Cardinals supposedly emphasize bringing "character players to AZ" and filtering out the bad apples, yet we wind up with David Boston, Michael Pittman, Thomas Jones and now Raynoch.

I makes you wonder whether the Cards have been too restrictive in their personnel policies. (Think about the number of teams who passed over Warren Sapp because of reported marijuana use just before that draft).

It was once said of the Cardinals 25 years or so ago "that maybe the team would do better if it had more criminals on its roster instead of choir boys." (Well maybe that's a bit harsh - but how about retranslating that to "More tough guys and fewer nice guys?")

In other words, if we were less restrictive in our personnel policies, would we wind up greater, fewer or the same number of offenders that we'd wind up with anyway?

Didn't we take Boston over Holt in the draft because we were worried about Torry Holt's "Character issues"?

If so, man is that funny.

Just another nail in the coffin for Mac.He's ultimately responsible even though it's the player's actions. The Cards had to have known about his previous problems. That being said,i think 4 games is pretty steep for an alcohol positive test. He's over 21 and it's legal. He wasn't stopped for driving and hurt nobody.I think it's a ridiculous suspension.Did Leonard Little get suspended by the NFL for killing someone when he was drunk? Now if ot was an illegal substance then i could see the 4 game suspension.Having a few drinks after a game should not get you suspended. That's ridiculous.

He better be cut after this. Isnt the only good thing about this team is the perception that we go for good guys and not convicts? It seems like talent isnt the only thing this team has a problem evaluating.

Obviously Mac is 100% behind him so what does this say to the rest of the team? Is the team also going to take action? I just dont know why he is different from DB drugs are drugs. You can die from both roids and coke and they are both addictive. I say drop him and let hayes start.

With 'roids, it's immediately four games, like what happened with Frank Garcia, or Julius Peppers last season.

Hey smart guy, they got suspended for ephedra. I'm sure you've used cough syrup, does that make you a juicemonkey?

To everyone else on this board who gets loaded at games and who is ripping Ray right now and saying he should be cut: You're the biggest self-righteous hypocritical jackasses in the world.

My post is a little deceiving. I wasnt comparing coke and roids but i am just asking what the difference is between what DB did and what ray is accused on this board of? The posession of one is just as bad as the other(in football terms). I mean in the football sense roids is worse because it enhances your performance unlike coke.

Thats only is you drive after. Nobody is saying to cut him because of beer but because it wasnt his first offense(if alcohol is the offense).

If all you are doing is comparing coke (DB) to whatever it was that got Ray suspended, then you are probably right...

HOWEVER

...it was clearly more than DBs little brush with the law that got him a one way ticket out of here. Now if Ray turns out to be some huge problem above and beyond this, then maybe there is a problem but when taken within their complete contexts the difference between Rays situation and DBs is night and day...so far.

There's another difference, too. DB was an a-hole.

Maybe asking him to be cut is harsh. I am just pissed that after a bad enough season, this happens. It's stupid. Whatever he did he should have known better, and if it was drugs or roids then all the worse.

I'd rather see this after a crappy season than in one where we're competing for a playoff spot. At least nothing is on the line, now.

You answer your own question. DB did get nailed for coke. Ray is accused - and not accused by the law, accused by a bunch of yahoos who don't even know what happened for chrissakes - of doing something that neither you or anybody else on this board even knows the circumstances of.

Talk about rampant speculation!! Yikes!

I just think if it's an alcohol related suspension that it's ludicrous. It doesn't enhance performance and it's legal.Jon Gruden got busted for DUI while in Oakland. Why wasn't he suspended?A coach being drunk is just as much a menace as a player.I guarantee there's alot of coaches using the bottle to wind down after games.Hell ,they alcohol on the planes on the flights back from roadtrips.I think the suspension has to be involve more than alcohol or he's had an earlier positive test that was for an illegal substance.
