You should know, you're the king of word play. You select only bits and pieces to make your argument. It's plain to see your dislike for Leinart and you never miss a chance to stick it to him. My point was that just because a hall of famer, playing at the top of his game, beat Leinart out for the starting job doesn't make him a bad QB. I'm willing to give him this season to prove himself before I throw him under the bus. You, on the other hand, can't pass up an opportunity to see how far you can you can jam him under there.

Im not jamming him at all in this debate. Just stating what happened.

In fact I have already stated that Matt should absolutely be given his shot (again) this season should Kurt retire. I will be rooting for him to succeed in the worst possible way. Doesnt mean I have to be confident about it though.

Leinart was handed the reins in 2007 because Warner was such a trainwreck in 2006. (Anyone else remember the fumbled snap, inside the twenty with less than a minute to go, that lost the Rams game? I couldn't have GIVEN away my Warner jersey the rest of that year.) 2007, Leinart gets hurt and Warner plays well the last half of the season and we wind up 8-8.

2008, Leinart is named first string, but it's clear there's a true competition (unlike the year before) because of how Warner finished in 2007. In my mind, that isn't being handed the reins. IMHO.
Edit: Statement deleted due to my timeline error. I must be getting loopy waiting for this press announcement!

Leinart was the starter, until hurt in 2007. Warner wanted to know that he would be given a chance to compete for the starter's job in '08. Whisenhunt said that he (Warner) would be given that opportunity. Warner won, and Leinart lost; but there is no shame attached to losing that competition to a man that then played at a HOF level.

Now it will be time, assuming Warner announces his retirement this afternoon, to give Leinart full rein again. I for one think that he will perform adequately enough, if not outright well, for the Cardinals to three-peat as Division Champs in 2010!

handed the reigns is what sanchez got. once he won the job (easily) he could have TERRIBLE games and they would stick it out with him. having a bad game in PRESEASON and losing the job is not handed the reigns.

Disagree. When the coach names you the starter and tells you that you are the guy going into the pre-season you were handed the keys. You just failed to do anything with them. Doesnt matter if he told Kurt you'll have a shot. All that means is if Leinart falters you will be the guy. He did and he was.

Whatever Shane... he will be given his first REAL shot to run this Whiz coached team. And again this team will now change its offense to FIT the skill set of a QB that is not KURT WARNER get it yet? You do understand that its totally unfair to expect Matt a young QB with limited experience to run a passing offense like Warner a seasoned vet and former SB winner and MVP right? Once the offense is changed to fit the personnel and Leinart is given a true opportunity to run this team I think you will see different results. And if not then its time to move on, until then your Leinart bashing just comes across as pure hatorade!

Jon Clayton was on Doug and Wolf this morning addressing this topic. He seemed very uncertain about Matty... Mentioned that regardless of Kurt's decision, the Cards will still be the most talented team in the NFC West. Believes we'll actually get better on defense. But the huge question will of course be, will the loss of Warner take the team from a 9-10 win team to a 7-8 win team... He seemed to indicate that Warner himself was good for at least 5-6 points per game, and losing that sort of offensive impact in a league where the margin of victory is paper thin, can take a team down several notches... He talked a lot about Kurt's ability to produce 1,000 yard seasons for our WR's, and the role he played - as only Kurt can - in the development of Breaston and Doucet. Seemed to imply that their development could be stunted with Matty at the helm...
So, can Matty somehow mitigate the loss of that sort of impact Warner gave the team?? That is the question...
Personally, I don't see it and I believe having Matty at the helm will produce, at best, 8 wins for the Cards. Hope I'm wrong.

I don't take it as Leinart bashing, he just differs on what given the reigns is. one thing we can all agree on though.

he will be given the reigns this year, and I think he will succeed.

Thanks bro. Sincerely hope you are correct with your last thought. That would be best scenario for all of us as fans.

Wow. That's going out on a limb. With Berry retired, Okeafor, Robinson, and Haggens members of the NFL division of AARP, and Dansby likely gone.

Time for a new thread on this.

Agreed... I just can't see how we will be "better" on defense... And yes, time for a new thread on this one! ;)
