Newman Directing the Nerds Redo
Source: The Hollywood Reporter
May 1, 2006

Kyle Newman has signed on to direct Fox Atomic's Revenge of the Nerds, says The Hollywood Reporter.

The film reteams Newman with screenwriter Adam F. Goldberg, who is rewriting the latest "Nerds" incarnation. The pair worked together on Newman's upcoming Fanboys, which will be distributed by The Weinstein Company.

McG and David Manpearl are producing the remake of the seminal teen comedy from 1984.

I'm getting tired of this crap. Eventually they will have destroyed every great movie and series. Hollywood has lost its creativity and now this lazy generation of writers, producers and directors will be the end of it all. I guess nothing is sacred anymore. Can't wait for the Caddyshack and Ghostbusters remakes :(

The fact that you call Revenge of the Nerds a "great movie and series" is precisely why they decide to remake it.

There's a certain bit of nostalgia with the movie (and I know every location for it since it was filmed at the UofA), but come on--it really was not a good movie.

It was when I was 8. Like you say, it is the nostalgia for me. I'm sure if I watched it now, I would not be so impressed.

Until the day comes when they say they are going to remake the Goonies, I'd say my suicide watch level is set to "nil".

Revenge of the Nerds 2007 question?

Hey has anyone heard any new news on the casting for the remake of the Revenge of the Nerds which I think is a bad idea to do a remake of this film cause it was a perfect film for the 80's but if anyone has any new news on this film would greatly appreciate it thanks :)

Great '80's film! It was filmed at the UofA the year before I got there, so I love watching it and remembering what the campus used to look like before all the new construction, new Student Union etc.

:thumbdown to the remake.

The characters from the original just can’t be duplicated, it’s impossible. I think even I would have to stay away from this if it happens.

From ComingSoon.net:

Katie Cassidy is in final talks to star in Revenge of the Nerds, the remake at Fox Atomic. Kyle Newman is directing the McG-produced remake of the classic 1984 comedy.

Cassidy recently beat out Jessica Simpson and Lindsay Lohan for the role of Lucy Ewing in the redo of Dallas for Regency Enterprises and 20th Century Fox.

In "Nerds," she'll play Suzy Stone, head of the Pi Delta Pi sorority and queen of the campus. Adam Jay Epstein, Adam Goldberg and Andrew Jacobson penned the script. McG is producing with Stephanie Savage and David Manpearl. Adam Brody, Bret Harrison and D. Scott Lumpkin co-produce.

Cassidy next stars in the horror film Black Christmas for Dimension Films and MGM.

How is it possible that it took four guys to write a movie that was already written?

School's out for naughty "Nerds" By Nicole Sperling and Borys Kit
Wed Nov 22, 5:52 AM ET

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - A remake of the 1984 cult classic "Revenge of the Nerds" has been shut down after only two weeks because it was too raunchy for the Atlanta university hosting the production.

The project marked the first effort for Fox Atomic, the nascent genre arm of Twentieth Century Fox, which said there was little chance it would be resurrected.

"Everybody has worked really hard on 'Revenge of the Nerds,' and we're all disappointed that we can't move forward," Fox Atomic president Peter Rice said.

After the $12.5 million film -- from fledgling director Kyle Newman -- was kicked off the campus of Emory University, "Nerds" moved to neighboring school Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Ga. But the smaller college lacked the large-scale campus feel that the movie's producers felt it called for. Once production was halted, it became a challenge for the studio to find another location acceptable for shooting, while continuing to pay an entire production crew for their time.

The studio has released all parties from the project.

Actor Adam Brody and director McG were producing "Nerds." Both declined comment.

"The whole production was standing by, and it was unlikely we were going to be able to get anything going until after the holidays," said studio spokeswoman Isabel White. "Given the pressures surrounding the film, it felt like we were trying to put a square peg in a round hole.

"There is little chance that this incarnation of 'Nerds' will come to be," White said.
