I decided to rewatch the game for the 3rd time. I wanted to focus on the offensive line play.
The first play of the game, where Wolfley has a now infamous rant, the line did a pretty good job. The Raiders brought 8. Pope went out on a route, so it was 8 on 5. The line game enough time for Leinart to basically throw a jump ball, that slipped through the line of Fitz. Adequate
The 3rd play of the game then run a RB screen to the left. Johnson and Wells are out in the flat. Wells misses an initial block on his man, while Johnson pushes his man 5 yards from the play. Wells came back and took his man out of the play. It actually helped the play and James almost turned it until a first down. Pretty good for the 1st screen that they ran. Punt
The first play of the next drive was a designed roll out for Leinart. The line did a good job on that play. Good
*2nd play was a run to the left by James. Wells gets beat by his man. Eventhough his man doesn't make the play, he got enough of the push to cause the play to crumble.
*3rd down & 3. Wells gets absolutely toasted on an inside move. Johnson shifted to the R to block Sapp leaving Wells one on one. I hope that don't do that again. Matt has to throw the ball in a hurry and it sails way over the head of Johnson. Horrible play for the offensive line, especially when Oakland only rushed 4. Punt
3rd drive of the game, After Oakland punts and downs it on the 3 yard line the Cards call a run to the left hand side. Both Bienneman, Gandy, and Wells get a good push off of the line to create a hole. Terrelle Smith cleans up the LB while Shipp cuts to the left hand side. Gain of 5 yards. Good play
*The 2nd play was a draw. The collective effort of Lutui and Ross miss a block, allowing the DE in the backfield. Shipp makes a hell of a play breaking the tackle and the left side of the line does another good job blocking down. However, this is still considered Bad, because of the missed assignment between Lutui/Ross First down
*This play was a disaster. The entire interior of the line was beaten here, as the pocket collapses in a hurry. The ball is overthrown and Schweigert almost intercepts the pass. Bad, bad play
2nd & 10. My favorite play of the game. Gandy blocks down, leaving a stand up rusher a free rush into the backfield. However, this appears to be as designed as Shipp picks up the rusher. This was a little out to Boldin . He catches the ball and gets to the first down marker. He lowers his shoulder and makes Schweigert look stupid. He blew him up in front of the Cards bench. I have watched this play about 10 times in a row. I love it. Good play by the line. First down.
*This is a WR screen to Fitz. Gandy blocks down again (probably as designed) and Shipp is a little late getting there. Matt looks like he is scared for his life, turns around and fires the ball in the direction of Fitz. Ross tries to cut block on the right hand side of the line and whiffs. This allows the DE to get up the field, and ever so slightly tip the ball, causing Fitz to miss it. Another missed block here, these are adding up in a hurry.
2nd down. This is the play where Fitz makes the great catch on the sideline. This was the best blocked play thus far. Even though Sapp got a huge jump off of the ball, Johnson was able to keep him in check. Pope does a heck of a job blocking the left side, and Ross jumps back to give Matt a nice pocket to work from. It looked like the pocket was beginning to collapse, but it didn't. Terrelle Smith stayed behind to block and didn't touch someone, that's how good the line held up. Matt had all the time he needed to complete that pass. Kudos to the line here. 1st down.
*2 TE set and Bienemann commits a false start Obviously this is bad.
Pope is now lined up on the R hand side. Boldin goes in motion, comes back, and stops at the left side of the line. The offensive line creates a huge hole on the left hand side for Shipp to run through. Smith hits his LB head on and Pope pushes his man back a good 6 or 7 yards off of the LOS Good play by the line here
This is the end around to Boldin. The CB has a run in the backfield, and slightly bites at the fake. The play looks like it was stopped for a 2 yard loss, when Boldin slips in between them. Line gets a free pass here. They did a good job, but could have done better blocking down on the left CB. First down.
The next play, Pope looks like he gets beat handily. Instead he goes out in the flat, and catches the Leinart pass. He puts a hell of a stiff arm on Fabian Washington. He never had a chance to tackle him. I hope to see more from that in the future. The play happened so quickly, but the line does a good job selling the pass to the flat. Good
2nd & 5. The line does a great job on this play. Pope was on and island and stood his guy up. The Raiders only rushed 4, but the line did a great job giving Leinart time to throw. He chucks the ball down the field. There is an obvious push in the back by Chris Johnson. The official was looking right at the play and swallowed his whistle. Another good job by the line here
*3rd down. The cards are in a 4 WR set with JJ in the backfield. The Raiders only bring 4 again, and Lienart takes a 7 foor drop. There is a small pocket there, but no one was open. Lutui gets beat on a double move. Matt scrambles to the R and throws a shovel pass to Arrington that was almost a fumble. The protection was good at first, but Lutui getting beat makes this a Bad play Punt.
This drive is where the Dockett Penalty happens, and the horrible PI call against Rolle. Raiders up 7-0.
Tally:
7 missed or blown blocking assignments.
3 average plays.
6 plays where the line did a great job.
1 false start penalty
Will continue on, but this post is already becoming a novel. Leinart is done for the evening.
