I haven't noticed if you mentioned Al Johnson. Did you? Sorry if you did, but he is adequate? Is that the guys name, the guy from Dallas?

I didn't mention it, but he had a good game. Probably the best of all of the linemen.

Good write up, I have a couple of questions that relate to but weren't the focus of your write up.

1) Aside from the delay blitzes that seemed to be troublesome, and a CB blitz, how creative did the defense get? Stunts from T to E vice virsa, or LB/E stunts? I ask because if it was mostly 4 or 5 rushing in, I'm still going to be worried about pass pro till I see what they can handle the more exotic.

2) I didn't tally up, but there seemed to be a lot more passing plays than running, towards the end obviously by situation, but I'm still not happy with the way the average seemed to drop off. Do you think this is directly attributed to the way the middle of the o-line seemed to be getting blown up?

1) Delayed blitzes and showing the blitz and dropping into a zone were used a lot. Most of it probably because they were playing against an inexperienced QB in Boyd for 3 quarters. A couple stunts that I saw, not to many though. Lots of straight ahead rushing, and LB's picking and choosing their spots.

2) The playcalling seemed right about average. We did throw the ball more when we were in the red zone though. I don't know if it was because the middle of the line was getting blown up, but if we didn't have a mobile QB in Boyd back there, he probably would have been sacked 3-4 times.

Great Job!
Sounds like Elton Brown will force the coaching staff to consider more playing time for him.

I had to rewind the video a few times to believe it.....was that Elton Brown holding his own?....was that Elton Brown pulling on that play?

Thanks for the play-by-play review, dcr! :raccoon: I know the effort that takes and I appreciate it.

When one breaks a game down that way, there is often a different AND MORE ACCURATE impression than just viewing the game initially.

For the opening pre-season game it appears that although there is some weakness in the middle of the line, overall it was a decent performance.

We will see as they continue to work, but I think the Card's OL play will be much improved from last season.

Good work!

Which play?

Center had the best game? Has that happened before?

Not that I can remember. Johnson may have gotten beat one play, maybe all game.

It took a lot of effort, but was actually pretty fun. I may do it for every game and put it on the blog on the front page.

The Texas Longhorns used to have fans who would post play by play with comments from scrimmages! Its about time the Cards had hard core fans like that.

One thing we have to remember though is that two people can watch the same play and come up with different interpretations of what happened.

Just look at the difficulties the NFL has with instant replay.

So did you just volunteer yourself to do the same thing, for a different point of view? ;)

I may do the HOU game.

I'll do the defensive backs.

Texans first and 10 12:43 2nd Q: Couldn't see what they were doing.
Texans second and 10 12:29 2nd Q: Couldn't see what they were doing.
Texans third and 10 12:20 2nd Q Green apparently had good coverage because he intercepted the pass.

I tell Donald every game, "man, at what point are they either going to a) start airing 11-11 cams or b) switch to a Madden-style/behind the QB view?

It would really be GREAT if we could see a behind the QB view. No question on the blocking then !

Thanks DCR for your effort, looking forward to the next games and your critique.

The problem with that view is the depth perception. A lot of times, you would have no idea about how many yards a play got. (Unless the camera is much higher off of the field)

That would be cool, but only on replays

I am sure we are working towards the day when we will get to pick the feed we watch -- tradional, coaches tape view or behind the qb

Soon enough we'll be able to pick the camera setting we want to view the game in.

Is that before or after all the NFL broadcasts are in HD? I think they are two full seasons away from that.

Shouldn't be. Every Suns game is going to be in HD this year. With the massive TV contracts that are given, they can afford some HD cameras.

That's CBS. Most of our games (NFC) are on FOX. I don't know if they have upgraded their equipment yet. In fact, there is no reason to at this point.

Get these damn cameras in.

True, but we'll still have two road AFC games that could be SD (shiatty def).

Overall, no. If someone was beat badly, you would have heard it from me. He had an average game. Leckey/Seidlein easily had the worst games of all of the linemen.

I watched the entire second half tonight and I will say it is very difficult even going frame by frame on each play to really tell exactly who did what.

I do however have to disagree with your take on Sendlein. I believe the plays where you say he "fell" to the ground were plays where he was asked to cut the DT to the outside so the RB runs right by the DT. The Cards ran that play at least 3 times and each time Sendlein got better at it. Because the C is asked to leave his feet to make the block he naturally ends up on the ground.

The last time they ran that play the DT was already in the neutral zone at the snap and Sendlein was still able to brush him enough to get him out of the play.

The blitz/sack you blame on Sendlein's line calls really resulted from #46 leaving to help Levi Brown on the right side instead of staying put and looking for the blitz.

Over all considering it was Sendlein's first NFL game he did very well. He made a lot of solid blocks especially solo on DT's in pass protection getting pushed back into the pocket only once and got better the more he played.

I told you two people could watch the same replay and get two different opinions. :D

Here is a perfect example: on a sweep by Arrington with Levi Brown leading the way there are 3 Raiders defenders closing on the play and Brown doesn't appear to block anybody.

However, if you look closely you'll see that the middle defender, a Raider DB, sees Levi coming, turns his head, and runs away! :koolaid:
