ASHEVILLE — Following a 4-0 victory over Erwin at R.L. Dalton Stadium on Wednesday, Reynolds soccer coach Patrick Gladys was focused on giving a postgame interview.
He didn’t notice his team had snuck up behind him, armed with water bottles and water guns to douse the coach after Gladys won his 900th career game.
“These numbers just stack up,” he said. “I’ve been here a long time. We’ve had a good program with good players. I didn’t win any games, I’ve just been on the sidelines facilitating.”
Gladys has coached Reynolds’ boys and girls soccer teams since the 1999 fall season, accumulating 466 wins with the boys team and 434 with the girls. The Rockets’ win Friday, which moved Reynolds to 8-1-1 this season and 4-0 in conference play, pushed him to the milestone.
“They have no ego about themselves,” Gladys said. “It means a lot for them to be a part of it and be the ones that delivered that milestone win.”
Gladys said this year’s team is primed for a run toward a state championship, noting it is similar to the boys team from the fall.
DOWDLE COMES HOME: Former Reynolds, South Carolina RB Rico Dowdle signs one-year deal with Carolina Panthers
His favorite memory from the sidelines came in 2015, when he led the girls team to a state championship. It’s still the only girls soccer title in Buncombe County.
That team will come back to Asheville next Friday to celebrate a 10-year reunion when the Rockets face Wando (South Carolina).
Gladys coached the boys team to a state runner-up finish in 2017. Last fall, after a season compressed by Tropical Storm Helene, he led the Rockets back to the 3A Western Regional final.
“I think about all the kids I’ve coached over the years, and I love every one of them,” he said. “I appreciate everything they poured into the program while they were here, and the tradition just builds.”
