People saying Peterson should let his play do the talking, in this case are wrong. Sherman is the type of player who lets trash talking off the field lead to him doing bone-headed stuff on the field. You get him ticked off with all this trash talking, sooner or later he's going to do something to get himself suspended.

Pro-Football Focus analyzed the play of PP, Haden, and Sherman and gave the nod to Sherman:

https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2014/05/14/corners-getting-paid/

I guess the key question---would you trade PP even up for Sherman?

I would. On top of being a better CB, IMO, there's a straight up nastiness to Sherman's game that I don't think Peterson has. Now, if Peterson was still a destructive force in the punt return game, I'd probably still give the edge to PP, but he's been mediocre at best there since his scintillating rookie year and doesn't add much there at this point.

Again, that's not to say Peterson's a scrub or any other hyperbole that will likely be projected on to this. But I just think Sherman's a more destructive force on the field and better then Hayden and Peterson at this point, both of whom are very good CBs, but not shutdown players.

If you read the stats provided by Pro-Football Focus, you'd have to agree that Sherman is indeed the more dominant force at CB. He plays the position like a SS. Who would you rather have coming up in run support? Others have reported the times PP was beaten by a WR when the Cards needed a 'shut-down' play. I am a Card fan and even with the home-town nod toward PP, I'd say at this point Sherman is the better CB. His stats prove it, his SB ring adds to his claim at being the better CB. You're correct in pointing out that PP lost his mojo in the return game, taking away that + on his behalf.

I would prefer to see Patrick focus on covering Floyd in practice , and a little less focus on trash talking with Sherman .

Agree with this. I'd also add that we're so, I don't know, sissified, that we get offended by Sherman and not PP. They're both trash talking, but because one dude is all polished and doesn't have the dreds and doesn't spit when he's excited, and because he's media friendly, because of that, we act like PP is more professional somehow or a better person or will have a longer career, or not get punked out. ****'s act like they know both these cats and they don't. Sherman could be a MUCH BETTER human being than PP but we get all butthurt because he mouth-rapes a mic while going off or says a little something to Tom Brady or gives too many interviews. The guy helped win a SUPERBOWL and his individual play in the NFC Championship won that game and ya'll act like he should just chill and put on a plastic smile ala Tom Brady and patronize dudes. People analyze his character, saying he talks because he's insecure. Maybe he just talks because he's freaking good.

I absolutely abhor trash talking, it goes against everything I grew up believing about competition. And Richard Sherman goes way over the top with it but for some reason that I can't quite put my finger on, I actually get a kick out of much of what he says. But all that aside, I would have hoped that PP would have recognized that Sherman has earned some bragging rights and focused on turning the tables on him on the field, not on social media.

My only problem with trash talking is when it occurs in the media and Sherman takes it to another level. On-the-field trash talking, if you can do it and still play, then go for it. Larry Bird was the biggest trash talker of all time--he'd tell guys guarding him, I'm going to go over here and shoot a 20 foot jumper in your face, and then go do it, right in their face. But he never did it in the media. Having said that, the best trash talker of all time was Jim Brown, who didn't say a word. He got up after a tackle the same every time--slowly. Dudes didn't know if he was tired or hurt or what, then he'd line up again and smash 'em. Over and over and over.

Agree with everything you posted about doing it on the field, and in my opinion PP is just trying to get paid. Period. There's no motive to get Sherman out of his game, it's only to get himself more money, that's how I see it.

We need more trash talking, not less. So far, I'd say Sherman is even winning the trash-talk battle. Need Fitz to chime in on the play where he gave Sherman a polite shoulder and knocked him flat. Fitz could have really hammered Sherman but was too much of a sportsman. That's how you win the trash-talk battle. Make the play and then you own the trump card when it comes to trash talking.

Guess PP will have to get in at least one play as a WR vs the Seahags. Run a fly route vs Sherman and have Palmer heave the ball down field. See who comes up with the catch---that guy wins the trash-talk crown.

Let's not and say we didn't give Sherman a free chance to end PP's season prematurely. He strikes me as a little vindictive.

Sherman may convince one of the players on the Seattle offense to take PP out. He may even convince one of the players on one of the other teams the Cards play to take PP out. He might get a hitman to track PP down here in Arizona. He might have a hired gun get PP when he is on vacation during the off-season. That's how vindicative that guy is.

Read the previous posts warning that we should not have PP on offense because Sherman is 'vindictive.' I agree. Sherman plays tough and I never have seen him take any cheap shots. That was the point with the sarcasm. Your comment is best served by following the comment that Sherman is vindictive. PP could just as easily injure Sherman on any play that he is a WR---look how vindictive PP is to challenge Sherman's claim to being the best CB.

I don't think he's going to hire a hit man or even talk one of his friends into taking PP out of the game but do I think he'd relish the opportunity to lay PP out, even if it cost him a few dollars? Absolutely. And I see no reason to make it easy for him especially since PP on offense hasn't exactly paid dividends.

Can't let a player on the opposing team intimidate you because of fear of what he might do. PP could get on the field as a decoy and hammer Sherman by throwing a downfield block---do you think the Seahags will pull Sherman should PP line up as a WR fearful of what PP might do?

Here's the penalty list for 2013:
http://www.nflpenalties.com/all-players.php

Guess you would pull the QB when the Cards go against the Bengals. Check out Burfict's number of Unnecessary Roughness, Personal Foul and Face Mask Penalities. Sherman had two Unn Roughness calls against him (reg season + playoffs).

Cards most penalized player: Winston with 8 false starts. Now that stat will get you pulled from the roster

Feel free to lose the attitude. I don't think Sherman's a particularly dirty player but like many of them he has a huge ego and, in the heat of the moment, if he gets a chance to paste Peterson, he's probably going to do it. You're in a very vulnerable position when you go up to catch a ball and the right kind of hit could end PP's season and I don't think fear of a $21,000.00 fine is going to stop Richard. If that was his job, if PP had true value on offense, it would be a different thing. But it isn't his job and trying to do more than his job seems to have stalled his growth at his primary position. I'm not suggesting you can avoid risk in this game but you don't need to go chasing it either. You walk through a minefield when you have no other choice.

There's no evidence that Sherman is a dirty player and would intentionally injure PP (or any other player for that matter). I'm sure he would like to deliver a shot . . . but so would any professional football player. Lots of downfield blocking on every play and Sherman is mixing it up with the TEs, WRs, RBs, and even the OL. Every player knows that just stepping on the field includes the risk of injury on every play. A professional player would be insulted if told to not take the field because the coaching staff is afraid of another player's 'ego' and that they might get hurt by the player with the big ego. Hold a player out if he is already injured---you don't hold a healthy player out because of fear of what might happen. A coach making decisions out of fear will soon lose the players respect.

I agree with this but I don't think it applies. If Fitz was having this war of words with Sherman and we held Larry out, then your point would have relevance. You manage risks but you don't go looking for them. What has PP ever accomplished on offense to make you believe the risk is worth it? I'm not sure I've ever thought the risk was worth it even before this social media battle. And now that we have a couple of speedy receivers, risking him on offense seems foolhardy to me.

Steve, these guys apparently exchanged jerseys after last years home Cards game. if anything, this is two great and very media savy players making even bigger names for themselves.

http://blog.azcardinals.com/2014/05/22/back-and-forth-with-peterson-sherman/

would he pulverize PP if he got the chance? yeah..but he pulverizes anyone if he gets the chance because that's what Sherman does.

That's interesting. So maybe I'd step back from the idea that Richard would go headhunting but I'd still keep PP away from the offense.

i'd keep him away also, but that's only because he never added anything there and I'd rather just see him concentrate on actually becoming that shut-down corner he's talking himself up as. I think that CAN happen if he's truly dedicated to one thing and his PR/WR duties are stripped away.
